Such a disappointing schedule for the Cougar fan base. UNLV, Middle Tennessee State, Cal (1-11 last year), Savannah State? Really? Anything less than 11-1 would be a disappointment with the quality of teams BYU is playing. Yet, if BYU manages to win more games than Utah (with Utah's brutal schedule of Oregon, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Michigan), all we'll be hearing about is how great the team in Provo is compared to the Utes.

It's downright annoying.

If Bronco doesn't go undefeated this year, he never will. This year's schedule is soft as 2011 (10-3) but he has a better QB and OC.

The Coaches poll just came out, not a single team on BYU's schedule is ranked.

Meanwhile Utah has the privilege to play:

#4 Oregon
#7 @UCLA
#11 @Stanford
#15 USC
#18 @ASU

Can't wait to see how this "coaches poll" looks about 5 weeks into the season !

just put my own 2014 preseason football schedule out today. I actually have BYU ranked 15th in my preseason poll . Oh,wait a minute my mistake as i just remembered preseason polls mean absolutely nothing before a down of football is even played ! Just WIN baby and things will fall in place this year !

Why? Like BYU could do better?

FACT: BYU has not beat a ranked P5 team in 18 years.

Speaking of being embarrassed: Virgina (2-10) 19 BYU 16
Virginia's other win: Virgina Military Institution (D2 team)

BYU was 2-5 vs P5 teams last year and 5-11 since going Indy.

Correction to my earlier post, BYU does play Texas which is ranked #23.

@taylormade1
Most likely in 5 weeks Oregon, UCLA, and Stanford will still be ranked and maybe USC. The question is will Texas?

pressure to be playing one of the worst schedules in the entire nation?

LOL!

Utes, whenever you make a comment about BYU's 2014 schedule, remember that your team refused to be part of it.

Let me see........What would I prefer; a) play a decent schedule and win games and go to a Bowl game, or b) be a door mat in a decent conference and watch my record keep getting worse each year and never go to a bowl game, let alone be the subject of any National Attention by any of the players for consideration for an individual award.

After much consideration, I think I choose "A".

Go Cougs and Go all the BYU players that have made all the "Watch Lists", from around the Nation!

@ Eddie,

"After much consideration, I think I choose "A"."

byu's athletic administration couldn't agree more with you, which is exactly why byu will never come close to winning a National Championship in the Playoff era, or any era that proceeds it.

The bright side to all of that is that byu fans will always have bragging rights to having annually played in the Beach Blanket Bowl.

Let's quit complaining about this schedule. It is a tough and gritty slate for a non-p5 squad and if you don't believe that, look at your Ball States, your Louisiana Lafayettes and your Troys. BYU's schedule matches up favorably with any of those other non P5's and is probably as challenging as a few actual P5 schools. I think that recruits who see themselves as not quite ready for a P5 conference challenge would look at that schedule and say, "If I'm not going to play big time college football, this is a good alternative. It's "almost" like being in a P5 conference program and I'll be able to say I played against the big boys two--maybe three times a season! That's something." Pat yourself on the back BYU. You're a scrappy little bunch and you've---ahhh---you've got a good looking campus.

The team in is great both in and outside of Provo. It's the team of BYU fans that dwells on making up excuses why they deserve to be in a P5 conference, and demand respect rather than earn it.

@Eddie: Of course I would choose option B with a chance to improve each year. And I wouldn't call it a "decent schedule." There are no real powerhouse teams on the slate, except maybe Texas.

It's sad that Utah fans have been reduced to trumpeting Utah's schedule and conference, instead of Utah's team.

Bottom line:

The Coaches poll just came out and BYU is among the teams receiving votes; while Utah is no where to be seen. Even NIU received more votes than the Utes.

Why win?
BYU can go 1-11 and will play in the Miami Beach Bowl this year. Nothing like a prearranged bowl to keep the fans motivated! Does not matter if they are in the polls or not, their fans will say how great the season was anyway.

"BYU doesn't have to go 12-0 and bust into the new College Football Playoff for 2014 to be a success."

BYU has already been eliminated from the College Football Playoff by this year's schedule.

That isn't hating on BYU - it is recognition that the P5's are in charge of the playoffs. If you think it is as simple as "Finish the season ranked in the top 4 in the AP poll", you are wrong. Way wrong. Selection is done by the playoff committee, not by sportswriters and broadcasters. The committee will look at the schedule that was played.

Especially in the inaugural season of the playoffs, the committee is not going to pick an undefeated mid-major team over a one-loss conference champion (or even a two-loss SEC team). It took several years for a mid-major to break into the BCS. It will take several years for a mid-major to break into the playoffs. It probably won't happen until the playoffs expand to 8.

Remind us the last time the Utes won a national championship, played in 10 straight bowls, or had a player win a national individual award.

It's quite amazing the a fan of another program would be ragging on a program that has already accomplished significant achievements that of his own program can only dream of accomplishing.

National Championships
BYU 1
Utah 0

10-game bowl streaks
BYU 1 (and on the verge of a 2nd)
Utah 0

National Individual Awards
BYU 15
Utah 0

Hey Ute fans,

It's so great to see the constant concern you have for what BYU does. But I thought you guys had all "Moved On".

I suggest you guys just worry about your own schedule...

"BYU was 2-5 vs P5 teams last year..."

And Utah was 2-7.

Which seems to suggest that the only "advantage" Utah has in playing more P5 teams, is the chance to lose more games to P5 opponents.
