    @Riverton Cougar
You do realize that rankings are to try to determine the best 25 teams in order from 1 to 25, right?

In 2004 the Utes were ranked #4 because pollsters felt that they were the 4th best team in the country. They did not rank Utah #4 "based on how they expected Utah to do against their schedule".

Seriously? You do realize the difference between preseason polls and end of the season polls, right?

"If BYU is relevant as you wish, then why is BYU not even listed in the top 25 of the poll?"

Which is more nationally relevant, a team that is receiving votes in the pre-season poll, or a team that isn't even mentioned?

    ___________

    Oh this is a beauty.
Because nobody cares or even talks about teams receiving votes outside of any top 25 poll. It not relevant or a topic of discussion on any sports network. Who cares other than desperate BYU fans? It does not matter what a preseason poll says. It does matter how you finish the season.

Out of the 45 teams listed in the coaches preseason poll who received 5 or more "points," BYU plays 3: Texas, Central Florida, and Boise State. ALL of those games are on the road. If BYU is hoping to get a 10-2 record or better, then they will have to win all of their games against "lower" rated teams, and somehow win at least one of those road games against the 3 highest rated teams on their schedule. Consideration: Since they don't play anybody rated higher than #24, if BYU is a top 15 team then maybe they should go undefeated?

It sure is nice to be relevent on the National Stage. Unlike a certain other university that claims BYU is next to a high school team. I guess this just shows where BYU is as far as respect vs a school that has to rely on who they associate with. I just don't know why any u fan is looking forward to this year. Same story....different year!

BYU is wonderful. Their fans are the best. Praise to BYU. Perhaps this comment will get approved?

This article doesn't make much sense, but a consensus of BYU's schedule seems to be a hot topic. Let's just put it this way Utah didn't do anything for it's tough schedule, they accepted a chance to go to the Pac12, just like any other school in this state would have, so enough about how tough your schedule is. As an independent your not going to have a great schedule year after year, but this years schedule is more difficult than the old Mountain West, or Wac. Plus last year was a difficult schedule and next year is even more so, interested to find out what people are going to say about that. In 2015, they start out with Nebraska, then Boise St., UCLA, then Michigan, 3 of those 4 are on the road. What makes it even more difficult is the travel time back and forth. As an independent your not going to get the best teams to play you all the time, but for the most part BYU has done a great job with the schedules, so enough of the complaining.

Man O Man, I love the national attention our Cougs are getting. I am sure the Aggies will move up in discussions of rankings soon. Sorry for the little brother to both the Cougs and Aggies. I am sure the media will be talking about the utes soon enough, when they and the entire ute fans are calling for a new coaching staff.

Prediction time (worth little but, hey, soccer is on TV so I needed to find something interesting to do):

UTES: Going to be a surprise and have 5 wins, maybe 6. Idaho State, Fresno, Washington State, Arizona, and Colorado with the surprise at Oregon State. Maybe Michigan... maybe not.

BYU: Big loss at Central Florida who would be vying for one of the PAC 12 top spots. Big win at depleted Texas and narrow win against Aggies. Being on ESPN in most of the wins and an exciting CFU game will put the Cougars in the top 15. Remember all of the WAC years when they played bad teams like Utah and got voted in the top 10 -- much better schedule this year so should be a fun ride.11-2 for the season.

USU: LONG season with 15 games! Losses at Tenn, Ark, BYU and BSU. 11- 4 with MWC championship game and bowl game wins.

Too bad Utah didn't feel USU and BYU were beneath them. Would have been an even more fun year.

I would guess that Bronco voted BYU between 21-25, so a small chunk of our points came from him. We are obviously respected by other coaches out there, because the thought that Bronco voted us 8th is insane.

I'm excited about this Cougar season and I know that the schedule lines up in a way that 12-0, 11-1 or 10-2 is a definite possibility but I, for one, don't want to see BYU go undefeated and get into the 4 team playoff, only because I don't think they're good enough and it could turn into a major embarrassment if they were to get manhandled. The schedule is not good enough to warrant consideration even if undefeated. I may drink the blue koolaid but I'm not naive enough to think BYU has much of a shot at being one of the 4 best teams this year. I'd love to be proven wrong--and maybe if they crush every team on their schedule with several of those teams being ranked in polls at the end of the year then I'd gladly change my tune but I don't see it happening.

Ironman-I agree with you, that 4-8 record looks like a likely ending to the Ute season. Not a big Y fan, but I have to say congratulations to the Cougars for a nice beginning to the season. Starting being ranked where they are, they have a very good chance to move up and be the top 20 at the end of the season. Which will affect where they are for the beginning of the 2015 season, if they keep winning on the field they could be a Top 10 team, although they may have to raise their strength of schedule. Good luck to the Utes and Cougars. Go Aggies. Earnest....yes, that was your funniest quote ever.

    There You Go Again:

"P5 conferences will be looking for any reason to deny a playoff spot to a non-P5 team."

Of course power conferences and the selection committee will. That was the whole point of creating a 4 team playoff. You're kidding yourself if you think a 12-0 byu team with this year's schedule (or any year for that matter), with 'style points' as you called them, is going to get a playoff spot over an 11-1 or even 10-2 P-5 team. Playing one, two, or three credible games a year just isn't going to get the job done. The ante has been upped big time for crowning a CFB National Champion. Everyone else sees this and is adjusting accordingly with tougher schedules. Why is byu and its fans behind the power curve (no pun intended) once again?

Utah plays 5 ranked teams in a 6 week period. What a Brutal schedule, what an opportunity.

    Great.

    Now just win every game.

    BTW,

    Style points will count.

    Why?

P5 conferences will be looking for any reason to deny a playoff spot to a non-P5 team.

    Go undefeated...but leave no doubt.

Drill every team on that schedule.

Bronco was one of the USA Today coaches who voted. He is probably responsible for the entire 18 votes cast for the Cougs.

As a side note, I see that five PAC 10.2 teams are ranked in the Top 25. I weep for Ute fans who will witness their team finish the season with a 4-8 record.

It doesn't matter that Utah isn't getting any votes. Or any national cred. Or going to bowl games. Or having winning seasons. They're in the Pac-12 and they beat their rival. That's all that matters, right Ute fans?

This can't possibly be right. There is no way that the college coaches that make their living and have spent their entire adult lives dedicated to evaluating football talent, would vote for BYU when ChrisB has declared that they are no good because of their schedule. Someone should run a fact check. Those coaches that voted for BYU should also be let go, because they obviously don't know what they are doing. Amway should have checked with Chris and some of the other posters on here if they want to know what is really up with college football.

Looking over this years schedule , the Y actually has 5 very credible games on their schedule as well as 2 more games against P5 conference schools ( not BYU'S fault how bad or good these 2 teams will be.They are still P5 schools ). I really think the trap game is UCF in Florida. Played in a BCS bowl last year and smoked Baylor . I actually love the Y,s independence and being able to play teams from literally every part of the nation. Not just the same teams year after year from a couple of states. Can't wait to see what this poll really looks like about 5 weeks into the season.Let the fun begin !

It seems pretty clear to me that beating Texas and Boise State (both road games) is the only real hope for BYU to have any top 25 credibility. And I'm not so sure Boise will help all that much.

There is a reason why the Utes aren't even in the top 25 discussion. You have to get it done on the field, not with conference membership(Utah), or ESPN TV ratings(BYU).

Why even publish this article? It will just turn into another battle about SOS and P5 versus Mid Major. The old "is it better to be scraping the bottom of the P5 or be a mid major?" debate will arise. Then the Pac 12 pride commentors will get on.

Overall, strength will always trump strength of schedule (See 2004 UU). BYU needs to show strength this season.
