Barely beating a mediocre Michigan team is a triumph and a huge moment only in Harmon's hyperbolic stories.

wrong justgordon... It was a big deal in all of college football in 1984... A little known team from the WAC swayed the hearts and votes of the AP and the UPI (inclusive of the college coaches)... BYU won the National Championship outright by unanimous decision... Something only USC from the big bad pac12 has been able to accomplish since ( and they did it in 2004)... Oh, and that mediocre Michigan team, was runner up to National Champion Florida the very next year.

I really don't think that the color of ENVY goes well with red and white... Do you?

I love going and looking at the NC Trophy along with all the other "hardware" at BYU. it is something that all ute fans should do also just so they can see what one looks like. I love all the National Recognition Trophies that BYU has won and will win against in the future. Team and individual! Wow it is truly great to be a Cougar Fan! Just to know that the rest of the country, especially the sports writers and coaches show their respect by their votes.

Unfortunately for me BYU's historic rise to football glory happened 3 years before I was born. It would have been amazing to see it occur in person. Here's to hoping we can get a NC in the near future.

Go Cougars!

LOL!

What do you expect? Talk about the title to get the P5 attention. Big 12 are you listening?

Please, no articles about this. We get an earful from BYU posters here.

BAHHHHH!

_______

Keep on loving to look at them Eddie. Nobody outside of lollypop land has respect for BYUs National Recognition Trophies. Otherwise you would be in a P5 conference by now.

Keep telling yourself that wacpad, I lived in Oklahoma and Florida for many years and I can tell you there is plenty of respect all over those areas for BYU. The problem with the u is most all of my friends there keep getting confused between the u and USU! Now why do you think that is?

I agree with justgorden because I remember when we won new mexico 13-10 and saved our awsome 2008 year. That was a way cool game with new mexico.

Go Utes!

We also won weber that year by 2 touch downs and that was awsome to.

Go Utes!

Oh Really?

While it was Bosco who was injured in that game, but it is the Utes who need a WAAAmbulance every time the topic of BYU's National Championship comes up.

Anyone who disses that national championship year either wasn't born yet or was too young to remember it. I don't care if you are a Ute, a Cougar or fan of any other school. Back then you won the championship by a vote of the coaches and the press. It was not a gift that was just handed to BYU. It was voted on by the national coaches and the national press who were all aware of BYU, Oklahoma, Washington and all of the other top teams from that year. BYU earned it and it was a unanimous vote.

Unlike today, the top teams like Oklahoma and others that were howling so loud that year, could have accepted an invitation to the Holiday Bowl. Every one of them declined. Every one of them. So that is why BYU played a 6-5 Michigan team. So unless you were there and can clearly remember what went on that year, you have no business dissing that NC. It was as legitimate as any other NC ever awarded.

Any fan who claims that the majority of sportswriters and coaches voted BYU #1 simply because BYU beat a 6-6 Michigan team in a bowl game is obviously clueless about college football and should spend a little more time studying football history, and a little less time spouting off about things that they obviously don't understand.

I've heard national sportscasters frequently cite BYU's national championship with respect on numerous national broadcasts; it's one of the many accomplishments that landed LaVell Edwards on the cover of Sports Illustrated's Mount Rushmore of College Football Coaches many years ago, along with Tom Osborne, Joe Paterno, and Bobby Bowden.

"This is the 30-year anniversary of that 1984 team’s exploits — the undefeated season, bowl-game triumph and eventual national championship."

After all of the yipping and yapping, there's only one major college football team from Utah that can legitimately celebrate a national championship.
