Companies need to move away from only hiring candidates with degrees. I attended night classes for ten years while I worked in my chosen profession, and I learned a great deal more from on-the-job experience. For the most part, the classroom training merely reinforced what I had already learned at work. Of course, my pay was low before I got my degree, but it grew as I gained valuable work experience. Best of all, I didn't have any college debt.

A degree at a big university doesn't guarantee common sense or real life experience. It only certifies that the candidate was able to finance tuition and other costs, and was good at passing tests. Companies would be better off hiring hard-working high school graduates with lower salaries but high motivation, and then invest in training them in the specific needs of your company. Help them take applicable night courses; it will be an investment that returns high dividends and employee loyalty.

Finally, we need to get back to becoming self-taught. A well read individual can acquire an enormous amount of information in a lifetime.

Amazing. Once again teaching the next generation to be parasites rather than accepting responsibility. Put on our big boy britches and pat off your debt without sponging off of your parents
