Congratulations to all of the players from all Utah teams selected for preseason
honors and award watch lists. And congratulations to the Utes on
their awesome new uniforms.
Here's hoping that the Aggies have an outstanding season and Chuckie is a
finalist for the Heisman. Go Aggies. Go Utes.
wow, the PAC-12 has 8 QBs on the list, way to go PAC-12!
BTW, I too love the new, spiderman themed, uniforms!
Number of Davey O'Brien preseason QBs on 2014 schedules:Utah: 8
(All the Pac 12 QBs, less Cal, but plus Michigan)BYU: 5 (Houston, USU,
Nevada, BSU, Cal)USU: 3 (BYU, CSU, BSU)
Nice bitter and jealous comments by the Ute fans. lol."Go anyone
who plays byU""Go Aggies. Go Utes."Sorry guys.
Maybe someday you'll have a good to great QB who makes some national
news.Go only BYU.
The Taysom Hill .vs. Chuckie Keeton quarterback battle will be an awesome
matchup this October. Look forward to the game.
BlueNtheFace,Have you ever heard of Alex Smith? Brian Johnson? Scott
Pac 12 has the majority of their schools QB's on the list. Fantastic, as
they join two from the great State of Utah. There are in good company. Sorry ute's, again the national media has spoken and the ute's,
AGAIN left wanting....
@ KralonNobody loves those.
Look at all those PAC 12 quarterbacks on the list! Too bad the U is gonna have
to take them all down! #FutureRoseBowlChamps.
Any change to the Ute uniforms will be welcome. They have been trying to get
too fancy and look too much like pajamas.
ekute"Have you ever heard of Alex Smith? Brian Johnson? Scott
Mitchell?"Yep, just like every Utah QB before or since, none of
them won the Davey O'Brien Award, which is the subject of this article. In fact, no Utah player has ever won a national individual award of any
Too bad the Utes got nervous about playing the Y this coming season and backed
out of their contract. Many of us were really looking forward to that game, even
if the Utes weren't. The days of eking out those single-digit,
one-score games while giving up more yardage are now long gone. The Ute athletic
director recognized that fact and made the appropriate switch in their schedule.
It looks better to national football pundits to lose to Michigan than to BYU.
Kudos to him for recognizing perceptions. Those two programs are
headed in opposite directions. Which team plays in post-season and which one
doesn't (once again) will remind everyone which direction it is that each
program is headed. Whittingham won't show the courtesy to
release those players who now see the handwriting on the wall and are trying to
jump ship. It appears to be a case of spite. Apparently, he's going to try
to pull as many down with him as he can.
Another no-news article about BYU brings a slew of Utah "fans".Personally, I think Hill has the goods to get a Davy or even a Heisman. But
(1) he's gotta stay healthy (2) he has to hit 70% of his passes (3) his
team has to WIN.Hill reminds me of Mike Trout. Big, strong, and
talented. Seems to be centered. If he improves as much as Young did from his
Soph year to his Junior year, Hill will be on a lot of lists. Of course, we
can't compare Hill's performance levels to Trout, who is the best
player in baseball, but Hill has the body. We'll see if he has
all the tools. If so, BYU is back in the quarterback business.
Re: Copacetic "The days of eking out those single-digit, one-score games
while giving up more yardage are now long gone."What's your
point? BYU hasn't beaten Utah by more than a touchdown in more than 18
years. After four in a row it's time to move on. BTW, did you
see the news on future bowl revenues for the big boy schools? Their conferences
get to divide $50 million each.Notre Dame gets $2.3 million and BYU and
the rest of the independents get to divide $900,000 between them. Yeh,
that's being relevant.
Go get 'em Chucky!!
@AggieAlumAssuming Keeton makes it to October.
It's funny how most fans cheer for their "team", not for their
conference. Pointing out how many other teams in your conference have someone on
the list only serves to underscore the fact that your team doesn't. Nothing
like pointing out your own deficiencies in the most crucial position on the
field. I suppose when your team doesn't produce, you have to beat your
chest about how amazing the other teams (your foes) are. I guess in some twisted
way you can argue that it makes your team look better than they really are.
Stringer BellWhat difference does it make how much the bowls pay if
Utah isn't good enough to qualify for one?Do you really think
that adding another leather couch or two to Utah's football training center
is going to make any difference to your bowl week couch potato experience?
I believe Stringer Bell has highlighted the potential demise for the current
college football scene. The bowl finance inequity between schools based purely
on association rather than performance can and likely will be challenged
(Utah's state senators were headed that direction just a few years back).
I don't believe any rationale person would argue that Kentucky, Vanderbilt,
Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, Virginia, Iowa St, Kansas, Purdue, Rutgers,
Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Maryland, Washington St., Cal, Colorado, and yes
sadly, Utah (and one could make similar arguments for a handful of other
"Power 5" teams), have consistently been better on the aggregate for the
last decade or more than UCF, Boise St., Notre Dame (though they are regularly
lumped in former group), Utah St, Northern Illinois, San Jose / Fresno St.,
Tulsa, Houston, BYU, Cincinnati, etc. As displayed by perhaps the least biased
ranking (Sagarin) over the last 15 years, while there have been outlier years,
many "non" teams have outplayed the "in" teams. It will be
interesting to see how this plays out again this year ... both for teams and
@ Common-TatorYou don't think Utah has done more in the last
decade than Utah St, Northern Illinois, San Jose, Fresno St., Tulsa, Houston,
BYU, Cincinnati. In the past 10 seasons Utah went 7-1 in bowl won two
BCS bowls. The list of teams you provided, except maybe Boise, can't touch
@ Two For Flinching:If you go back far enough in football history,
Utah did show some pretty positive things relative to getting into and winning
BCS games. Sadly, those days are getting further and further back in the rear
view mirror. It's now been multiple years since Utah has even
had a winning season, let alone qualified for or played in any bowl games
whatsoever. But if you want to rest on past laurels, have at it. Based on the tough schedule Utah has next season, things aren't going to
get better anytime soon. It honestly appears Utah got in over their heads when
they joined the PAC12. They haven't done anything to brag about since then.
An occasional big-name win, but no consistency nor any winning seasons. It really does seem quite sad when fans quit bragging about what their
team is doing within their conference and instead can only brag about belonging
to that conference. But playing each season to avoid being the very bottom
basement team truly does not impress anyone. Kyle is a nice enough
guy. I hope he eventually figures out how to turn things around.
twoferUnfortunately for U, with the advent of the playoffs,
"bcs" will become a meaningless term, and the "past 10 seasons"
will start in 2005. With Utah's quickly fading program failing to qualify
for a bowl for the third straight season, Utah's list of achievements the
"past 10 seasons" looks like this:6-1 in bowls, 3 straight
losing seasons, 2 AP Top 25 finishes, 1 11+ win seasoncompared to8-2 or 7-3 in bowls, 10 straight bowls, 4 or 5 AP Top 25 finishes, 3 or
4 11+ win seasonsUtah's twin flash-in-the-pan seasons are
quickly fading into the past and the Utes are becoming nothing more than another
perennial P5 bottom dweller no better than the Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake
Forest, NC St., Virginia, Iowa St., Kansas, Purdue, Rutgers, Illinois,
Minnesota, Indiana, Maryland, Washington St., California, and Colorado teams
@ekuteI wouldn't bring up Utah quarterbacks in a BYU discussion (by
the way you forgot Lee Grosscup). The Y has had an amazing list of NFL
qb's earning them the name "quarterback U" from the national media
along with Penn State as lineback U. But the important issue, right now, is
that Utah is in a precarious QB position, where both USU and BYU have strength
at that position.
ekute: "BlueNtheFace, Have you ever heard of Alex Smith? Brian Johnson?
Scott Mitchell?"Good call, ek. Alex finished 4th in the 2004
Heisman race, and he and Scott got drafted into the NFL. Certainly national
attention. I got caught up in the rivalry smack there for a moment. Carry on.Go Cougs, Go Aggies! ;)
@Ekute"Have you ever heard of Alex Smith? Brian Johnson? Scott
play with Red Grange or Knute Rockne?Hooray Pac12! Go Pac12! Kick
some heiny Pac12! Yayyyy Pac12!
Looking forward to the Oct 3rd USU vs BYU game. It will certainly be the game
of the year in the State of Utah. As for the u-trolls commenting on an article
that has nothing to do with their school, you should be more concerned that the
u will still be playing qb by committee again this year.
Wilson is real good.Go Utes!
@ CopaceticMy post with in response to someone else who set the time
line as "the past decade". I think Utah has a fair chance to reach a
bowl game this year. They aren't as far away as many people think.
2fer"I think Utah has a fair chance to reach a bowl game this
year.""fair" might be overly optimist - I'd guess
that Utah's chances of qualifying for a bowl this coming season are no
better than 1 in 3.
Utah State has pushed out Utah for football relevance.
The new playoff TV pay outs have been released. Each member of the PAC 12 will
split $50 million. That equates to just under $4.16 million for Utah. The 3
independents (not including Notre Dame who will get $2.3 million) will slit
$922,995. That equates to $307,552. The usual suspects can cry and moan about
how relevent BYU is, and Utah isn't, but the numbers speak volumes. Utah is
at the Big Boy table. BYU is at the Kiddy table. That's the way it is, no
spin required. I love the angst of the usual Utah Haters on these threads. I
guess when you can't beat Utah, and you are on the outside looking in;
that's the end result. Karma!
@Spokane Ute: "The new playoff TV pay outs have been released. Each member
of the PAC 12 will split $50 million. That equates to just under $4.16 million
for Utah. . . .the numbers speak volumes. Utah is at the Big Boy table. BYU is
at the Kiddy table. "Translation: "Being paid to lose is
better than winning!" Sitting in a high chair at the "big
boy table" may be great for some fans. I'd rather see my team win.
But have another PAC-12 sticker if that'll help you sleep better. By the way, I've *never* seen a PAC sticker on a USC, UCLA, or UW
fan's car, and I've lived in PAC country for most of my life.
And one last thing, Spokane Ute: "I love the angst of the usual Utah Haters
on these threads."If I'm not mistaken, this thread was
about BYU and Utah State. No mention of Utah quarterbacks here. What exactly
are you doing other than hating on other schools' threads?
Spokane UteThe numbers only prove how undeserving some P5 programs
are of sharing in the gravy train produced by the big boys of college football -
they don't make U any more relevant than any of the other P5 bottom
Spokane Ute"The usual suspects can cry and moan about how
relevent BYU is..."LOL!BYU fans don't have to
do anything to prove how relevant BYU is; our jealous friends on the hill with
their BYU obsession do that for us everyday. The truth is, BYU is the
standard against which the Utes measure themselves.
WA Alum&DadActually it's being paid to be a member of one
of the toughest conferences in the country. Personally, I'd rather see my
team play the best with an opportunity to go to a big time bowl; and play the
best from the other top conferences. If you prefer being the nomad of college
football, scramblimg to fill a schedule, playing a weaker schedule; with no
chance of going anywhere but the Beach Ball Bowl; good for you. By the way,
I've never seen a PAC 12 sticker on any car; or a I love being Independent
sticker. I also have, and currently live in PAC 12 country. The whole sticker
thing really seems to get you upset though. Who gives a rip what stickers people
put on there cars? I could care less. As far as hating, just commenting about
the PAC 12 and TV rights; as others have strayed to the PAC 12, Utah
conversation. Folks like your self have certainly made me dislike BYU, but hate?
As far as the subject matter; good for both QB's. Keaton is the best QB in
the state, the kid can flat out play. Utha's QB play has been suspect to
say the least. It sure is easy to rile BYU fans (or Utah Haters is
probably ore accurate), just mention revenue, PAC 12 and relavence and watch
out. It always seems to be the usual supsects too. That's OK, everyone take
a deep breath, keep the forum in perspective, and by all means; have a good day.
@Pac 12,Isn't it funny the Big 12 would rather call themselves
the Big 12 with only 10 teams rather than look to their default(byU)LOL!With the "competition" in the WAC that taysom and
chuckie will face this year, I see them both having big numbers.
WA Alum&Dad,If you haven't noticed, Spokane ute is one of
those "fans" who thinks its ok for Utah "fans" to act a certain
way but when any BYU fan does the same he gets bothered and throw a tantrum.
The feelings are definitely mutual Spokane! Good luck keeping a QB healthy this
WA Alum&Dad"Sitting in a high chair at the "big boy
table" may be great for some fans. I'd rather see my team win. But have
another PAC-12 sticker if that'll help you sleep better."Great quote ! ! ! It reminds me of a toddler who is always at his Mothers
apron strings crying for food (money). All the while the grownups eat and talk
while the adults just roll their eyes at the child until someone finally puts
him down for his nap.
@Spokane Ute,That's free unearned money you're talking
about. The role of utah is to lose games. It's
clear,--the utes can't compete in this conference, but are allowing more
teams to become bowl eligible by losing.
"With the "competition" in the WAC that Taysom and chuckie will face
this year, I see them both having big numbers."Unlike Utah,
which only won 2 championships in 37 years, BYU did quite well in the WAC.
BlueNtheFaceRancho Cucamonga, CASorry guys. Maybe someday
you'll have a good to great QB who makes some national news.------So sad you're so uninformed about the game.Alex Smith (has and continues to make 'national news')Scott
MitchellBrian Johnson (to a small degree)Name me one single
BYU QB who is currently making 'national news' in any regard. Just
one.I'll save you the reply. You can't. Because there
aren't.BYU's starting QBs since 1992:John
Walsh... bust.Steve Sarkisian... bust.Kevin Feterik... bust.Brandon Doman... bust.Lance Pendleton... bust.Bret Engemann...
bust.John Beck... bust.Max Hall... nuclear thud.Jake Heaps...
bust.Riley Nelson... bust.Taysom Hill... TBA, but likely bust.Oh that's right. For some reason you're still pretending like
it's 1990. I wonder when you fans will finally start moving into the
current era... although I completely understand why you're not. The current
age of football has been anything but kind to BYU, so it's just easier to
live in the past. What a sad state.
@Tomahawk Red--It's about bowling!Now that is
really a sad state!
@Tomahawk RedSo sad you're so uninformed about the game.Alex Smith (has and continues to make 'national news')Scott

like it's 1990. I wonder when you fans will finally start moving into the
current era.---------------------Wow...ute hypocrisy has
been taken to a new level. For starters I'm not sure what "national
news" Alex Smith is making except he did make national news recently when he
lost his job at SF.As for BYU QB's making "national
news" Steve Sarkisian made national news when he took the HC job at USC.
Also, Heaps made "national news" when he transferred to the U and Taysom
is making national news currently and is on nearly every major QB award watch
list including the Heisman. btw, don't see any ute QB's there.I won't mention the embarrassing list you put together (Scott
Mitchell and Brian Johnson, really?!?)Hope that helps.
both Chuckie and Taysom are on the 2014 Heisman watch list but I don't
recall seeing any ute QB's on that list. Anyone help me there?
Did I overlook someone? With all their recruiting advantages and $$$ I'm
sure they'd have at least 2 or 3 QB's on that list.
