Comments about ‘Utah program helps deaf babies to hear’

As a father of a Deaf child, I agree with most of this article, but I disagree with the statement that without sound, the child will be behind or delayed. I agree that they will be behind with vocal speech, but my 3 year old daughter was born with a profound hearing loss, and we have all worked very hard to sign with her. She uses American Sign Language, and is at or above grade level on all assessments.

Deaf children need sound to speak, but do not need sound to develop or progress. They simply need language. I am glad there are ways for those who need hearing aids to get financial support.

What a great program for children who are deaf. I think that everyone should have the opportunity to hear and when you are little like that hearing is a crucial part of life. I remember watching the video of the baby that gets the new hearing aids and hears for the first time.
