BYU is irrelevant than Utah? I can't tell that looking at pleothera of comments on every BYU article.Go look at every single BYU football article and tell me if Utah fans think BYU is irrelevant. Irrelevant is when someone doesn't give attention. For example SUU or Isu is irrelevant to BYU fans, because we don't spend all our time and effort commenting on those teams article.

    ----------

Fan comments on an Internet message board do not make a team relevant, friend. Two years ago when Petrino got axed and John L. Smith made a mockery of that program, which had everyone talking about Arkansas, did that make them relevant? Hardly.

Wins on the field against respectable opponents and ascending into the top 15 and making at least a semi-serious threat to crack the BCS/Playoff is what makes teams relevant.

Sorry for that bit of reality.

U-PAC, honest question here: What was your "mark it down" prediction/guarantee before last year's TX game? I have no idea what the outcome this year will be . . but neither do you. I love how you and Chris position yourselves as level-headed truth-tellers, when you clearly have a bone to pick. At least be honest about your biases. No-one's fooled.

    @Copacetic
No contract was broken. Utah and BYU were never scheduled to play the next two seasons. Also, you know what I mean by BYU avoiding Utah. "Their luck has run out," that was quite the stretch.

    @ U-PAC:

In mentioning upsets, you mentioned Michigan losing to Appalachian State. That's no bigger than Stanford losing to Utah.
And BYU losing to Utah isn't too far behind those two. Even the Utah AD realized as much, so consequently chose to drop the next couple of games against BYU. Smart move.

    Tomahawk red,
Outside of Utah no one cares about U. U is an after thought, BYU vs Boise is considered more interesting than Michigan vs Utah that says a lot.

They just aren't relevant to College Football, as a losing Conference Bottom-Feeder.

    ---------

Sorry to burst your bubble, but BYU is even less relevant than Utah is. That's pretty bad.

If Utah, a mediocre P5 team isn't relevant to the game... a mid-major independent that has made next to zero noise on the national scene in the last 15 years... and one that is not respected by the SEC, ACC or any of the other power conferences... and has no shot at joining the P5, BYU is flat-out dead in the water irrelevant.

    Sorry, but that's reality.

In athlon's lost BYU comes twice. Where are U?

    ----------

Okay, that's fair enough. I don't know where Utah is on the second list. They should definitely be there. Utah and Michigan is a pretty good matchup, whether Athlon (who has never been kind to Utah) believes it or not.

Utah/Michigan is far better than several of the games they have listed.

Be happy you're not in a power conference. Because if you were, no one would be impressed with BYU's mediocre record and you wouldn't show up on these lists.

BYU is where Utah was in 2008, 2009 and 2010... a respected western "power" that is good playing mid-majors but would sink fast in a P5.

    Striker,

I've lived in Texas. I've seen high school stadiums that would pass for a really nice college stadium in Utah. Trust me, I know about football in Texas. Prepping with masks/altitude tents is not the same thing as coming into a game actually prepared and taking the team you are playing seriously. This is what Texas did not do enough of. Anyone who watched the game without royal blue glasses could see that.

Again, Texas is not the same team they were a decade ago, but BYU will still have a tough time beating them, in part because Texas will not be caught resting on their laurels again. In addition, the chances of a repeat performance in terms of quality of play by BYU are slim, as evidenced by the rest of BYU's games that season.

Also, altitude does have a measurable effect, but it isn't as big a deal as people make it.

@Tomahawk Red...can you still say Tomahawk in Obama's PC America?

    Trust us all...
Utah will not make any list.....for any reason.

They just aren't relevant to College Football, as a losing Conference Bottom-Feeder.
Just as over half of the contrived P-5 teams, are just the Washington Generals of their leagues.

Just wait and see how many Major Network games are picked up with Utah vs BYU.
The boys in the Network suits know exactly who has appeal and who does not.

    BYU...National Brand with Tier 1 Academics. #62

Utah...Cute Regional School with Tier 2 Academics. #122

This great matchup was made possible because BYU accepted a 2-for-1.
Some fans say BYU is too good to have to settle for a 2-for-1.

If you enjoy the preseason attention paid to a BYU game, and enjoy playing teams like Texas, be sure to thank Tom Holmoe for not letting pride get in the way of scheduling. These are the games you want to see, even if it takes a 2-for-1 to make it happen.

    Aggie,
"anybody could see that they didn't take BYU seriously in that game until it was too late"

Are you blind? Texas posted on twitter and everywhere about the masks they were using to prepare for BYU's altitude. They planned for that game for months. They were totally prepared, but BYU outclassed and outran a bunch of 5 star recruits.

If BYU wasn't so offensively challenged the year they lost to Texas, BYU would be undefeated against Texas. FYI, football is Texas. Football is like the biggest thing in Texas. I love how people like Aggie belittle the power of Texas....totally unfathomable! For BYU to be 3-1 vs. Texas, with two of those absolute blowouts, is a huge deal. BYU can and will hang with Texas, and who cares what a brand new coach puts in the locker room.

    @ U-PAC:

It seems obvious that some people have more money than insight. I'm anxious to hear your excuses after this game is played and your wallet emptied. Won't be any sympathy.

If you admire Chris B's insights, then that completely proves you have very little yourself. Nothing personal intended.

When you say "mark it down", does that mean in the same way Chris B says to do so just before usually being proved wrong? Case in point, his last "mark-it-down" was when he emphatically promised a Ute NIT b-ball victory against a WCC opponent whom he said had no chance at all against the Utes... then got drubbed 71-39.

You sound a lot like he did.

    @ 2020:

It's not BYU who is avoiding Utah. It's Utah who is breaking their contract and avoiding BYU. I give them credit for realizing their luck against the Y has run out. Their short string of single score victories was indicative.

    @ FT:

Utah's series of more losses than wins keeps putting me to sleep. In fact, I won't be watching a single Ute game this next season. Not enough caffeine exists.

This is the only BYU game I'll keep an eye on all year. The rest of their schedule puts me to sleep. Just what are they playing for year in and year out? Time to get back into a conference, any conference.

    2011 BYU 16 @Texas 17
    1988 @BYU 47 Texas 6
    1987 BYU 22 Texas 17

How I longed for Heaps to hit Apo on one of the long patterns in the 2nd half when the ball was over-thrown in Austin in 2011. Sitting in the stands I was just waiting to hear the moans from the wearers of burnt orange. Instead I heard it last year in Provo from a few that sat behind me. By halftime it had gotten old and luckily they left with about 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

    Go Cougars!!

I feel much more confident in the Cougars chances at Texas than I did a year ago for the last game. While I expect the game to be much more challenging I am hopeful the Cougar offense is much improved than they were last year. They did the bulk of the work on the ground. That sort of magic rarely happens twice.

The Boise game should be interesting as well. Glad it made the top-30 list.

I'm betting Texas is going to play BYU extremely tough this year. Although BYU definitely has a chance to win, Texas will not go easy on them. Unfortunately my gut tells me Texas wins this one, just like Stanford is going to beat Utah (teams like that don't like getting upset and want to take revenge).

  • Kralon HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA
    June 17, 2014 4:38 p.m.

This will be a fun game to watch and likely a very different Texas team than BYU saw last year.

I'm hoping BYU will be very different also and burn Texas in the air! Go Cougars!

  • Aggie238 Logan, UT
    June 17, 2014 4:35 p.m.

This will be an interesting game. I don't think Texas will be caught flat-footed like last year (not saying they would have won had they not been, but anybody could see that they didn't take BYU seriously in that game until it was too late), but they have not been the team they once were for a few years now. On the other hand, BYU played their best game of the season against Texas last year, but I don't know if they can repeat it. I'm assuming the game is at Texas this year, so I'm going to go with the Longhorns by a touchdown.

  • Darren Rowe Heber City, UT
    June 17, 2014 4:20 p.m.

Should be a fun game to watch.

Unfortunately, I think Texas will pull this one out, but BYU will absolutely have a chance.

They blew them out in 2013 and came very close on the road in 2011.

We can definitely compete with Texas.
