little perspective

"The Utes don't need an elite OOC team on their schedule (though they have Michigan the next two years) they already have 9."

What difference does it make who U have on your schedule if U aren't even good enough to finish with a winning record?

In order to get an invitation to the playoffs, the Utes are going to have to finish with at least an 11-2 record with a win in the PAC 12 championship game.

In their entire football history, the Utes have only managed TWO 11+ win seasons, NONE with a SOS ranked in the Top 40.

Despite your improved SOS, the Utes aren't even as close to qualifying for the playoffs as BYU - at the very minimum, U have to qualify for a bowl.

Utah - looking through the crimson-colored glasses and thinking they're in, when they're really OUT.

BYU - being projected as a possible playoff buster and actually having a chance to be IN.

Repeat after me...Utah IN...byu OUT and fading fast!

I about wet myself with laughter. It should read "Utah in and forgotten!!" (in just 3 years non the less) BYU out and yet more known then ever. I am reminding everybody that I predicted this when Utah joined the Pac 10.2. Cellar dwellers and forgotten about. 101 in the Orlando sentinel. OUCH!

Face the facts yourself; Utah's football program has been in steady decline since 2008:

13-0, 10-3 ranked, 10-3 unranked, 8-5(4-5), 5-7(3-6), 5-7(2-7)

The writing is on the wall; Utah fans are still living in denial that 2004 and 2008 were the new norm for Utah, instead of simply being an anomally for an historically mediocre program.

@ Duckhunter

I know exactly how football fans in the South perceive Utah. I was in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, and their opinions were quite condescending. However, all that proved irrelevant when Utah was walking off the field, trophy in hand.

Here's the reality that you may not like: It's a pre-season poll in an Orlando (not national) newspaper. It means nothing.

Here's why your post is completely irrelevant to the discussion: Utah is in a P5 conference, and has a minimum of 9 games against P5 teams each season. Utah has no scheduling challenges. That is a wonderful benefit of being IN. BYU has been struggling to keep its head above water as far as scheduling goes, and things just got a whole lot tougher.

It is fun to watch the new era of college football unfold for byu fans as they continue to be smug and in denial.

We may be celler dwellers in the PAC but we are in a prestegous conference and you are not so that makes us prestegous and not you.

It's laughable to watch the new era of college football unfold for Utah fans who continue to live in denial that being in a big boy conference hasn't made you anything more than cannon fodder for the big boys of the conference.

The only thing U have to look forward at the end of the season is the annual pillow fight in the rockies against a "rival" that couldn't care less about U.

Many of us are contributing to the demise of byu football and I'm proud to be part of it.

The big 12, pac 12(us), SEC, ACC, and now MWC are all contributing to the downfall of byu football by not giving them what they want.

I will look back and be proud to have watched and been a part of all of this.

New to Utah

BYU is competive with Boise State and Utah State and so these are great games. BYU showed that they are not competitive with Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Washington. It was so hard to watch the Cougars get thrashed by these ranked teasms. I actually bought into the concept that BYU was going to be competitive with ranked teams but that was not the reality.Cougar football has not closed the deal for me that independence was a smart move. Yes the contract with ESPN gives more exposure but if they can't win or at least be very competitive in key games is it really that good. Why can't BYU beat Utah? They played at LES last year and they looked awful when will the cougars get to next level?

Duckhunter, you always make me smile. Thank you. I am not certain why so many BYU fans perceive their team as a powerhouse that should be included in the Big 5 as the Notre Dame of the West. This is certainly not the case as evidenced by recent comments from the larger conferences as the lack of affiliation with BYU. Reality is the facts. Ranking Utah as they did is a ranking, it is a prediction, it is not fact. However, the snubbs that BYU is receiving from the Power 5 is a fact, it is reality.

And changing the subject doesn't change reality.

My PAC12 Sticker is Awesome!

At the risk of getting pulled into a stupid conversation...

First off, just stop talking about BYU relaxing its Sunday play rule. It will NEVER happen. Anyone suggesting that they should do that clearly doesn't have a clue about BYU.

Secondly, while many of us fans would love to see the Cougs have another shot at a national title, for most of us it honestly doesn't consume our thoughts or ruin our enjoyment of the game that they might not. Since going independent, we have seen some pretty darn good teams on the schedule, and a bunch of teams that aren't so good. How is that any different than the past. At least we are seeing teams we haven't beat up on in the past. Might as well beat up on some new ones.

Finally, most of us are not jealous of Utah, now matter how big your PAC12 stickers are.

One thing is for sure, not matter what happens, no matter how hard you try, we will always be BYU and you won't.

Flashback to Naval Vet: BYU already had their "ducks" in place to move to Indy. They were just waiting for a good time to move. When Utah elected to make their move, BYU decided they would make their move at that time, probably to ease some tension and lessen the flack they knew would be coming from all directions. They just didn't foresee some Utah fans' being so critical of BYU doing the same thing that their own "beloved" Utah was doing - which is doing what is best for their school and their fans. I applaud what Utah has accomplished, as I do the same for what BYU has been able to accomplish. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 5 years with college FB. Peace to all of y9u Utah, BYU, & Utah State fans. Let's enjoy the ride and cut the criticism of one anothers' programs. Better to pull for each other instead. That is the right thing to do.

Chris B, what is it you did, exactly, to lead to BYU's demise? To all utes, because of your membership in the PAC, you will go far. I hope soon.

Naval Vet,

I don't need to blast out the ties I have and who they are. If you don't believe my earlier comment...I don't really care. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

That's because he's right. You made that up.

Just because YOU think BYU is a better overall fit in the Pac 12 doesn't mean the conference had them at the top of their list.

That's about as delusional as it gets.

Utah was chosen. BYU was denied. Get over it.

Yea you are. And no we're not. We couldn't be more happy about that.

And yep, you and every BYU fan on the planet is jealous of Utah. Deal with it.

That's probably because you are satisfied with your myriad of annual slogans on your bookstore t-shirts.
