If you have a motive and decide not to share it, why share you have a motive at all?

I know it. I Live it. I Love it.
Provo, UT

No drugs, no alcohol, no mental illness...?

Outside a small number of other motives, there isn't much else I can imagine.

San Francisco, CA

** "We think we know the motive" for the alleged killings, the captain said, but he declined to elaborate. He said, however, neither drugs, alcohol nor mental illness are believed to be factors. **

Someone is accused of concealing at least 10 pregnancies until the very last moment, even from her husband and children, strangling or suffocating 6 newborns, and hiding the bodies in her garage, and there is NO suspicion of substance abuse or mental illness? In other words, a totally sane, normal, rational person who was not under the infuence of alcohol or any drug did this?

Who expects us to believe that?

Utah, UT

Drugs, alcohol, and mental illnesses are not motives - they are attributing factors to a motive.

And once again, another misleading headline meant to draw readers in.

St. Louis, MO

She doesn't appear to be mentally ill???? Really?

Cedar Hills, UT

Not mentally ill? Sane thinking does not seem to be standard practice for this woman. In addition to concealing pregnancies and the unconscionable acts upon her offspring, she moved out of the house without apparently even thinking what might happen when someone inevitably found those boxes. Truly bizarre on so many levels.

It says, "police think they know motive. . ." Yeah. We know. We're just not going to tell anyone about it. Why say anything if you're not going to say anything at all?

I thought that irrational thinking was indicative of some level of mental illness. However, "bizarre" does describe it well. I am with the other posters who think it was unkind to divulge that a motive is suspected, but not share it.

Highland, UT

If she is found mentally ill, she'll spend time in a comfortable facility, all medicated and in therapy with the potential of a release when she's "better". If she's found competent to stand trial for the murder of 6 infants, she goes to jail and pays for her crime. I hope she's not found mentally ill.

Also, If she had gone to a doctor and had 6 abortions, she'd be off scott free. Either way, abortion or post delivery murder, there's still 6 dead babies. One gets you jail time, the other has "no consequence". Ironic and sad, isn't it?

This whole story just breaks my heart. For a newborn baby to be killed by the one person who is supposed to protect and nurture him or her is something I have just never been able to comprehend. It makes me so sick to see things like this. So sad.

It also makes me wonder what her living children have gone through with her.

Mom of 8
Hyrum, UT

If her living children are female, might her dead ones be male?

I suspect there's some neglect or even abuse that may have been in that family. An actively engaged and interested spouse/relatives would have been alarmed the first time she hid a pregnancy, and would have been vigilant in observing her in the future. But she had a second hidden baby and no one noticed? And then more?

This woman alone isn't to blame for the bizarre behavior; those around her enabling her share in some of this as well.

Is Huntsman a mental health professional?

Los Angeles, CA

I meant, is Roberts a mental health professional.

Crazy is normal to a crazy person. Just because she had a logical reason for her behavior doesn't mean she isn't insane.

Murray, UT

I don't understand the thought process of people who support abortions. Can someone who supports late term abortion but is appalled at this story explain the difference?

Provo, UT

Misleading headline.

Richfield, UT

People are begging for a motive because this is so incomprehensible, the police really have their hands tied, they can't just say what they think has happened as that could be considered slander & open up another can of worms to deal with. Evidence & statements/confessions have to be considered & then a formal charge made speculation alone cannot be divulged until all the leads are followed just like a court has to hear all evidence & testimony before handing down a verdict. The family members need to be considered & alerted first in meantime the public wants to know everything NOW! Sad for her daughters especially.

I feel cheated by your story line and the failure to inform me.
