Utah also took the “mythical” title by beating St. Johns in the Red Cross benefit game.

Key word "mythical".

It is a fun, feel good story though.

Item # 1: This is a photograph of the Utes winning the 1947 NIT. That is Vern Gardner carrying Vadal.

Item # 2: This is more than a feel good story. These Utes were made up of all Utah kids. They played all freshman except for the late Fred Sheffield who was injured, but jumped center at the start of each game. They were beaten out of the NIT Tournament which was the biggest tournament in that time. They substituted for the Arkansas team, that was in a tragic traffic accident, in the NCAA. They then earned the right to come back to New York and play Dartmouth in the championship game, winning at the buzzer. Dartmouth was an all-star team due to the officers training program at that school. They beat St. John's on their home floor. A true tragedy turning into a dream come true.

Great story. Great people. Great championship!
