Not sure if I can accept Coach Whit's assessment of any particular player or groups as last years QB's were the deepest (proven incorrect), the offensive line was the strength of the team (proven incorrect) and the defensive line was deeper (suspect at best). Let them prove themselves in a game before much is said.

Wookie is right in the sense that everything is talk right now and we don't know what the season will really bring. If this were basketball, we would say that everyone has a shot at the National Title (because they do). However, this is football and only a limited number of teams can even hope to be in considered for the national title regardless of their season. This Ute fan can hope for that. Will it happen? Maybe not. But at least we can say we are in the race.

I'm guessing the running backs look good because the O-line is opening up holes against an inferior D-line?

Wookie:

I don't recall reading any reports about Utah being considered "deep" at the QB position last year. That said, I'm still a bit concerned about all the glowing reports from our RB corps. And that's because Poole got good reviews. Poole is a fine receiver out of the backfield, but he's just not a "Pac-12" level RB. In fact, I believe had he been playing in the MWC, he'd still only be a mid-level ball carrier. And last I'd checked, Utah's roster listed McCormick as only 165-lbs. Our CBs are bigger than that. Booker is an unknown (albeit highly touted), and nobody ever mentions Oliver, who was supposed to be the best back remaining on our roster. So if Poole is substandard, and still rated ahead of Oliver...

...that's not looking too good.

Good thing our top WRs will be back on the field, because as of right now, I'm not confident we'll be showcasing a very intimidating Run game.

Go Utes!!!

D line was suspect last year, are you kidding me?

4th in the Pac-12 (8th in the nation) in sacks
3rd in the Pac-12 (20th nationally) against the run

the D line was not the problem last year.

I wouldn't read too much into the running game yet, most of the 2 deep on the D line wasn't practicing yesterday, so the O-line definitely should have been opening holes. The good thing is that they did, the question is will they in conference play.

Football season can't come soon enough.

Go Utes!!!!

There is a lot of fight in this ute team.

I think if the team can put it all together, the utes can beat Colorado next year.

Last year, Colorado, who didn't beat many other division 1 teams, but almost beat the utes who was lucky, but with the go slow go soft offense declining, I think the utes might (not likely) beat the Buffalos.

I think beating Cal is also possible. the utes hasn't been able to beat many pac 12 teams lately, and is below five hundred against them. A team many fans call the Pac 12 doormat, but with Cal being the worst in the Pac 12, the utes has a shot in that game.

@worf "I think if the team can put it all together, the utes can beat Colorado next year"

That's a funny comment considering BYU lost to a horrible Virginia team who's only other win in '13 was against the Virginia Military Institute. Who's tougher, Colorado or Virginia? Heck Colorado has given Utah more of a challenge over the past four years than your soft Cougars.

@worf "I think beating Cal is also possible. the utes hasn't been able to beat many pac 12 teams lately... A team many fans call the Pac 12 doormat).

Also a funny comment considering Utah doesn't play Cal in "14 worf. You do realize that Utah will likely end up with the #1 SOS next year as they replace BYU with Michigan and Utah State with Fresno. Utah will have a tough time getting out of the basement of the PAC12, but what does that say about BYU who went 0-2 last year against the mid to bottom of half of the PAC12?

worf, please keep posting. This is great entertainment.

Last I checked, it was Utah's little brother who had been pinning their hopes on a win vs. the 2013 1-11/Pac-12 last place Cal Bears....who lost to Colorado.

How frantic and emotional of you.

the past 2 season, the utes have only won 5 games in the pac11.u, and just 10 games overall... not too dominating

LOL

Ifel Of'a-sofa (a.k.a. Duckhunter),

Over the past two seasons BYU has an even worse winning percentage than Utah in the PAC12 winning only 1 of their 5 games. LOL
