Thank you so much for publishing this. But,why was this event "pretty much ignored?" It's such a sad commentary on our society. Why don't debate teams and ACA DECA teams receive the same amount of attention as athletic teams? The tragic message: it's sports ability, not mental ability that our schools, newspapers, media, etc., really value. High school honor rolls should be published and stories written about students who excel in areas other than just sports.

Doug, thanks for this article. Utah Academic Decathlon has been going on for more than 30 years, but I have never seen a feature on it before. It's really quite an event, with teams from all over the state, exciting competitions, and medals ceremonies. It's a monstrous shame that none of you News writers have ever shown any awareness of this event before. Maybe you could start balancing things out a little.

Why are we so shocked that a girl from a small town is smart? Small town girls are smart too. And small town girls get a good education too (IF they want it).
