While I agree that food inflation is up. Futures on these commodities go up and down regularly and it appears that the author is only attempting to portray the rise.

value of the dollar isn't worth what it was last year. say the dank lone 50,000 at 3% in 5 years they [just a guess] 4500 interest but the value of the money is 5000 their loosing 500 on the lone.
