"...congrats to the Gonzaga Men and Women for pulling their games out in the first few seconds."

At least BYU's Men and Women both played in the conference final, which is more than can be said for the Utes.

btw, Gonzaga only lead BYU's Men by 8 with 2:08 still left in the game. Hardly an insurmountable lead.

I love this Running Ute team. Coach K is building it the right way. He's building a defense oriented tourney team. NCAA, NIT, it's all good this year. This is gravy.

One of the things I like about basketball is all the RPI and other rankings don't mean as much as winning on the court. That's the bottom line especially when tournament time arrives. Win and your in. So I don't put much effort into analyzing all the different rankings and all this talk about whose conference is tougher will be resolved in the NCAA tournament when we see who advances. As far as which team is better between BYU and Utah, I look to the head to head match up and it is pretty simple. All those RPI comparisons don't mean squat!

    Go Utes!

Nothin better than seeing how jealous cougie fans are of the U. The Utes football and basketball teams are so much better than the cougies right now its not even close and it's driving cougie nation crazy. They know the future at smurf university is not looking good and will lash out as much as possible before it falls completley off radar.

thanks smurf fans you have made my day yet again enjoy watching our PAC 12 battle with the wildcats today.

The top 10 teams in the PAC 12 all had winning records and both Utah and Washington had some good victories (let's not forget that Utah beat up on BYU as well as dismantling ASU by 20+ points, beating Colorado by 11, beating UCLA by 5, beating Cal at Cal and playing Arizona close both times including an overtime loss in SLC so you can point to the flawed RPI all you want, the proof is in the pudding and our #8 PAC 12 team probably would win the WCC - which is a sad statement on how weak that conference is.

"If 1984 is ancient history, then 1944, which was simply a tournament title versus the weakest field in NCAA history, is pre-historic"

Wrong! Utah's 1944 NCAA tournament title was a National Championship. Every NCAA tournament champion since 1939 has the title National Champion. The NCAA and ESPN will disagree with you. If you want proof, then go to ESPN dot com and go to Utah's basketball page. Go to their tournament history and go to 1944. It says in bold "Defeated Dartmouth in National Championship, 42-40". What more proof do you need?

If the 1944 NCAA tournament is the weakest field in history. Then what does that say about BYU's 1984 Holiday Bowl? BYU played a 6-6 Michigan team (barely bowl eligible) which makes that the weakest bowl opponent for a National Champion to play. What's the difference between Utah's National Championship in basketball and BYU's National Championship in football?

  • Elmer Fudd Sandy, Utah
    March 13, 2014 12:47 a.m.

    @ No playoff for U

So I guess that means that San Francisco is the class of the WCC. After all, the Dons are the only team in the WCC to win a National Championship in basketball. Plus they won a NIT championship as well. They have more of a storied basketball history than BYU (who has never reached the Final Four).

    Speaking of National Championships:

The PAC-12 has 16 National Championships in basketball won by six different schools.

    Arizona 1
    California 1
    Oregon 1
    Stanford 1
    Utah 1
    UCLA 11

Although UCLA is still the class of the PAC-12.

Utah lost to #203 Washington State.

The lowest ranked team in the WCC is #183 Loyola Marymount."

The U's next two worst losses came at #92 UW & at #77 BSU, both by 2 points. They were beat only once by dbl-digits, at UCLA. In addition to losing to LMU by dbl-digits, they lost to #180 Portland, #161 Pepperdine and #132 Pacific. Aside from catching unranked Stanford/Texas in the season's first week four months ago, they've beat GU at home and nothing else.

The problem w/RPI is it's not an accurate barometer of ranking teams. It leans heavily on rewarding teams for tougher schedules, but considers virtually nothing else, including Ws/Ls. It's important only because the selection committee emphasizes it so much which prompted ESPN/Lunardi to develop BPI, which considers signifinately more variables and should indicate the beginning of where we're ultimately headed toward. Byu is proof one doesn't need to beat ranked opponents, merely schedule them to enhance RPI ranking. Read about BPI's creation/purpose.

BPI indicates those who should dance, the outdated RPI those who will. U-Byu H2H does matter when comparing the two.

When BYU Basketball left the Mountain West Conference and joined the WCC they had no idea what laid ahead and the same can be said of Utah joining the PAC-12. Both BYU and Utah have realized the competition is better than they expected. Whether we are talking BYU or Utah the opposing team wants to win too. I suspect if the tables were turned, Utah would struggle against WCC teams and BYU would struggle against the PAC -12. THERE!!!!! enough said, now everybody talk nice to each other.

    Bottom line:

That is why I said who. Good to know SF won the championship years ago. I knew that Gonzaga and BYU have never made the Final 4, wasn't sure about the rest of the conference.

Someone a little sensitive that his team has 4 years in a row in football and got blown out in basketball this year. U basketball is back, and will be better next year with Loveridge and Wright coming back. BYU has reached its peak as runner up in WCC to Gonzaga.

Same reason why BYU fans bring up 1984 during football season when they played in the WAC.

Utah's 1998 run to the National Championship Game was the greatest run that any team in the state could only dream of doing. Both the Cougs and the Sun Devils are dreaming about making runs to the Final Four which is something Utah and Arizona have done multiple times. Plus they both have won National Championships too.

  • Uncle Rico Provo, UT

    Re: CougarSunDevil

Point is BYU claims the WCC is so good, but they (WCC) never make noise in the NCAA tourney (Gonzaga made the elite 8 once (in 1999, the year after Utah made the Final 4)). Since then no WCC team has made it passed the sweet 16. The WCC is all bark and no bite. Claim to be good in regular season then they choke in the NCAA Tournament.

The competition is much better in the Pac-12, hence a team with more losses in the Pac-12 can be a much better team than a WCC team with fewer losses.

Utah is now 10-9 in Pac-12 this year, but BYU will brag about a 13-5 WCC record (despite losses to Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland, and Pacific).

and of course head-to-head games never count any more. A 17 point win in Basketball or a 44 point win in football somehow makes you inferior to your opponent.

I'm surprised by the "my dad's tougher than your dad" mentality being expressed. I will simply say, nice win Utes. I think the Utes have a definite shot at beating Arizona tomorrow, but they have to finish the game, not coast. I think BYU will make the NCAA tournament, but I won't be picking them to win in my bracket. I don't think they're a team built for tournament success. Not enough team concept and defense. That's a real weakness, I think. I think the Utes would have a better chance of a first round win, but unless they win the PAC12 tournament, won't be invited. Good game Utes. As a BYU and Utah fan when it comes to basketball I think I can be more objective about things than most other fans that love one and hate the other. BYU has issues but so does Utah. Neither team is great but both have shown they are good, and at times will surprise you and exceed your expectations. That's what I'm hoping for when the utes take on what I believe is an over-rated Arizona team...exceed my expectations and beat the over-rated over-hyped wildcats!

    Uteology:
Give me a break dude...Washington would be lucky to be 3rd in the WCC and most likely be 4th because I believe (and so do the experts) that USF is better tha UW. And to those questioning BYU in the PAC12, the Cougs went on the road and beat Stanford, something Utah was unable to do recently (and BYU controlled the majority of that game). I think right now the programs are pretty even, but that could all change depending on what great recruits for both programs do in the future. Good luck to both!

Apparently in two years Utah has gone from being taken to the woodchipper by the likes of UNC-Asheville and Cal State-Fullerton to making BYU fans feel like they need to argue that their team is better (which I'd agree, albeit it's not a big margin). That said...

That's illogical. PAC-12 teams have shown quite a propensity to win at home and lose on the road. BYU lost to Utah on the road (albeit not very far away from home) and to several of the inferior teams in their conference on the road. I imagine that BYU would be somewhere in the giant cluster between 3rd (10-8) and 9th (9-9) in the PAC.

The Utes had a great game today against a good Washington team. Washington boasts one of the nation's best players in CJ Wilcox. It's not their fault they're the 9th BEST team in the PAC-12, which has 10+ quality teams. You're gloating over the fact that you beat Stanford. Anybody could get up for 1 game verse a good opponent. The hard part is playing an entire conference full of good teams consistently. Utah was able to go 9-9 in a good conference with all but 2 of those losses coming down to the final shot. BYU wouldn't come close to a .500 in pac-12 conference play.

9th place in PAC 12 is better than 2nd place in WCC

To Spokane Ute and other reasonable Ute fans,

Congrats on the Ute win today. Tomorrow probably not so much, but who knows. If Utah gets hot they could probably do some damage.

To all other Ute fans who mock BYU or other teams based on Conference affiliation.

Congrats to the Utes for earning the right to lose to Arizona in the next round.

"Washington would be the best team in the WCC."

As usual, you're long on hyperbole, short on facts.

    #19 Gonzaga
    #35 BYU
    #62 Saint Mary's
    #72 San Francisco

    #80 Utah
    #92 Washington

Neither Utah, nor Washington, are as good as the San Francisco team BYU swept this season.

The ninth worst team would actually be the fourth best, which is Cal. A team we just beat on the road last week.

    @Christy B

Congratulations on being in a conference where practically every team besides Gonzaga is worse than Washington! Enjoy being irrelevant for years to come!

Y fans live in a fantasy world! The WCC is TERRIBLE!

After almost blowing it in the 2nd half, the Utes come away with a nice 8th vs 9th seed win.

Unfortunately, after that pushing Arizona to overtime, the Utes won't be able to catch the Wildcats napping.

Dakarai Tucker is the 3rd best player in the State!

    1 Wright
    2 Loveridge
    2 Tucker
    4 Swoop
    5 Haws

Good win, but did we really need to let them take the lead twice before we closed them out?

    Bring on Arizona!

    Utah 72
    Arizona 65

Daviscoug - thanks for the well wishes. It's nice that some BYU fans can be gracious. Not so much with others.

Good grief, that was harder than it should have been based upon the great play in the first half. Nice to see them pull out a close game at the end.

Delon Wright is the man! And Tucker had the shot of the game.

Good Job Utes and Good Luck against Arizona tomorrow!

I wonder if CJ still thinks his team has "been in control for the most of the game," or if Utah just "went on a run" again. CJ's a good player and I hope he has a long, successful career in basketball, but his interview with the Seattle Times came off as arrogant and sour grapes about being "snubbed" by the first all-conference team, but being selected for the second instead.
