Having personally witnessed the Portland/LMU game last night, I can only warn the Cougars to ignore the comments of some of the opposing fans. My biggest surprise was that the ushers did not escort one certain group to the doors within the first few minutes. i don't believe that players or fans should have to listen to very personal attacks for the entire game. As a society, we have lost it if we can't stand up to a few fans who try to take over. Last night, the bad behavior distracted from a rather spectacular comeback.

Chris B. is right, I went ahead and "checked the facts". I had to dig a bit but sure enough, coach Larry K has won a conference tournament. In 2004 his mighty Montana Grizzlies beat the formidable Weber State Wildcats by two points to take home the Big Sky title. That is definitely more impressive than Dave Rose's four NCAA tournament wins.

Wrong. Coach K does have a conference tournament championship. And I'll spare you the rebuttal "yes I know Coach Mike K does," Coach K on the hill does as well.

    Check your facts

"No NCAA bids are given based on how many championships any team's coach has won in the past."

I do understand the point you are making. However, we all know that in some cases, bids (or seeding) are granted due to past performance or the reputation of the coach. (*cough*Duke*cough)

    @ 81Ute:

Besides Dave Rose, Coach Larry K has never won a conference championship either. So what's your point?

The teams playing this year are playing for themselves and not ancient history. No NCAA bids are given based on how many championships any team's coach has won in the past. It's totally irrelevant. Chris B brings up such things simply because he doesn't have anything more pertinent or intelligent to offer. That's the reason most readers simply ignore his comments. I'm glad you're astute enough to say that you usually don't agree with his adversarial attitude him, either.

Both Dave Rose and Larry K are both proving themselves to be very good coaches. Rose has taken BYU's teams to post season play every year he's been a head coach and to the NCAA tournament more years than not. Larry K has helped the Utes improve every year since he's been their head coach, with more good things ahead. As such, there's no reason to lower the quality of comment dialog by being negative about either coach or school.

    @ 2013 Ute Seniors:

I've actually forgotten what the mascot for Utah's teams is. Would you please remind me... assuming they actually have one.

One other question. Since Utah's preseason schedule was literally full of teams that none of us know the mascot name of, why didn't Utah schedule some of those WCC teams (other than the annual BYU game)? Perhaps they're smart enough to know their own competence level when it comes to winning. But it is telling and perhaps a good reason you should consider shutting up about constantly knocking the WCC. It gets old and simply demonstrates a high level of college sports ignorance.

How do you spot a perennial bottom-dweller? They always talk about how great their conference competition is rather than their team. Really! Who cares who you lose to? BYU has been a great basketball program the past decade, and yes the Pac12 is a great conference (without Utah's help). Go BYU!

NevadaCoug-Why is that even being discussed here?

Because the DesNews comment police are so good at enforcing their own policies. Of course, if they did, we'd be missing 85% of the comments on BYU articles because Christy from Ogden (and her 12 other alter egos) wouldn't have a single one approved. That's a two edged sword though because removing her BYU obsession would be like cancelling the comic section of the newspaper.

Now watch the irony. This comment will be denied as off topic or disruptive.

    "Who Am I Sir?"

Everyone knows the WCC is not as competitive as the PAC12. You're touting old news, again. If that's all you've got to contribute, you might as well not be wasting your time. How a team does in their conference is more important than which conference they belong to. Especially since all conference tournament winners get automatic bids to the NCAA tournament.

At least give BYU credit for joining a conference where they have a decent chance of winning it. The same can't be said for Utah. They've never once finished in the upper half of their conference. Sadly, Utah fans spent more time and energy bragging and talking about their conference than they do about their own team... the Utes. That's a strong indicator that they're over their heads.

That said, I do hope they do well against Stanford. Coach Larry has made great strides with the Ute program since taking over. I'd love to see as many teams as possible from our state make it into the NCAA tournament this year.

Good luck to the Cougars and Utes... as well as the Aggies.

What does Utah's chance of making the NCAA Tournament have to do with LMU beating Portland to face BYU in the WCC Quarters? Why is that even being discussed here?

    No playoff for U

"The only chance the Utes have of getting an NCAA invite is by winning the PAC 12's auto bid, like that's ever going to happen."

Don't discredit the rest of a good comment by adding such a silly ending. I agree with your assessment on BYU and its chances but to say Utah doesn't have a chance at an at large bid or at winning the PAC 12 tourney is absurd.

Why you say? Most analysts have the PAC 12 pegged as a 6-invite league this year. If Utah can beat Stanford in their final game it may very well put them at 4th in the final standings. While that alone won't necessarily make Utah one of 6 that get an invite, add a couple wins in the Pac 12 tourney and that could change things in a hurry.

Additionally, all you have to do is look at how well Utah has played every team in the Pac 12 this year to understand that they could very well win the Pac 12 tourney. This is by no means a prediction that they will, but simply a statement that much crazier things have happened.

Let's see. To win the conference championship BYU must defeat Layola Marymount whose record is 13 wins and 18 losses. Then a game against an unranked team in the Semi-finals and finally a game against another unranked team (Presumably Gonzaga who was 30th in the latest AP pool) What a conference. What a way to insure an automatic invitation to the "big dance"!

    BYU should win easily.

There will be a large crowd rooting for BYU.

If Tyler gets on a roll...BYU by 30.

LMU will be coming into the game with momentum...with nothing to lose.

BYU will be coming into the game with everything to lose.

When BYU plays tight...the shots don't fall.

When the shots don't fall...the Cougars tend to press.

When the Cougars press...they tend to lay an egg.

In a one and done setting...the pressure will be on the over-whelming favorite...not to lose.

  • NevadaCoug Overton, NV
    March 7, 2014 10:45 a.m.

I think BYU will do better against the type of pressure LMU put on Portland, but we'll have to see. They may not even use it.

One thing that I'm pretty sure of: BYU won't commit 20 turnovers and give up 30 points off turnovers. Sure, it could happen. However, I have to believe coach Rose will have his players prepared for that.

Without those points off turnovers, LMU has no chance in that game last night. They had difficulty even making lay ups.

I don't want to seem as if I'm discrediting LMU in any way. However, BYU is clearly the better team and should do just fine.

I'm sure Rose will have the team watching the LMU/Port game today in preparation for tomorrow's game. They'll need to really work on breaking the full-court and not let it frustrate them into mistakes. The Orleans is a strange arena and BYU hasn't played terrific there. Hoping the team is mentally ready and we see the tough minded play we saw the last few weeks. I think getting the champ. game will get us in the NCAA but falling in first round will mean NIT. Go Coug's!!

    @No playoff for U

I do not condone the tone of comments by '2013 Ute Seniors SWEEP byU 4-0', but that comment is correct. Dave Rose has never won a conference tournament. The last won was 2001.

BYU has only won 3 conference tournaments in its history.

Watching that LMU vs Portland game last night, I kept saying, BYU does not want to face that tenacious, swarming D we all witnessed last night. They are quick and they press in order to catch up when they are behind. Never rooted so hard for another team to win, but the Pilots could not deal with the pressure. It seemed at times as though the refs got caught up in it too. Time will tell. Go Cougs!!!!

    The Rock,
I really agree with you, except I don't think I would call Worthington a "beast". I think he gives very good minutes, which is odd to say because he has more fouls than points or rebounds most of the time. Worthington will be a very good, all-around player for BYU eventually. You forgot Austin who is a beast on the boards.

Well, how funny those trolls up north. Good luck on your part with the PAC.

Yes LMU is dangeous and we better be ready no matter what. We lose this one then we sweat at selection day with the ncaa or hello again at nit.

    So anyway, good luck Cougars.

2014 Ute Juniors without a bowl

    Thanks for checking in.

Dave Rose has won FOUR conference championships, has been to SIX, going on SEVEN Big Dances, and is 12-4 versus that little school up north.

In the same time period, the Utes have ONE conference championships (shared with BYU), have only managed to make it to ONE NCAA, and haven't won a single game in the Big Dance in almost a decade.

BYU is a lock for an at-large bid as long as they make it to the WCC championship game.

Utah has no chance of getting an at-large bid.

Just to help out our uninformed little friend, here's a list of WCC mascots:

    Gonzaga Bulldogs
    Loyola Marymount Lions
    Pacific Tigers
    Pepperdine Waves
    Portland Pilots
    Saint Mary's Gaels
    San Diego Toreros
    San Francisco Dons
    Santa Clara Broncos

Check out pictures of the campuses of each - some of the most beautiful campuses in the country.

BYU is a much better team now.

    Haws scores like Jimmer.
    Carlino has Jimmer range.
Winder is a beast, scoring in double digits as a starter with a smothering defense.
Collinsworth is a real match up problem playing the 1-4 spots. Jabari Parker only plays the 2,3 & 4 positions.
Mika and Worthington are both beasts. Worthington has really emerged in the last few games.
Josh Sharp and Nate Austin are not to be ignored.

These eight players would start on almost any other team in the conference, many would start in the PAC-12.

    Yeah, they will go dancing.

    Bowl-less 2014 Ute Juniors

Dave Rose has won FOUR conference championships and taken his team to SIX, going on SEVEN NCAAs. BYU is a lock for the Big Dance as long as the Cougars make it to the WCC championship game.

During the same period, Utah has won ONE conference championship (shared with BYU) and only played in ONE NCAA tournament game. The only chance the Utes have of getting an NCAA invite is by winning the PAC 12's auto bid, like that's ever going to happen.

Being that I have as many conference tournament championships as Dave Rose, and being that Dave Rose said today byu most likely has to win the WCC tournament to go dancing, I'd say byu's chances of dancing are somewhere between slim and none.

This scenario of playing Portland/LMU was a lose lose for byu.

Both of those teams proved better than byu at certain times during the year(see scoreboard)

    Should be a close game

Go LMU(insert mascot here since no one outside of the WCC even knows it)
