When did I mention Utah football? What are you talking about?

    Dave Rose era (recent history)

BYU 230-76(75%), 6 going on 7 NCAAs, 9 straight 20+ win seasons, 4 conf champs, 12-4 vs Utah
Utah 136-146(48%), 1 NCAA, 6 losing seasons, 1 conf champ, 4-12 vs BYU

It's hilarious how, under the crimson bubble, nothing before 2004 counts in football and nothing after 2005 counts in basketball. 1984 and 1996 are ancient history in football. 1944 and 1998 are like yesterday in basketball.

I'll take, any day, a CONSENSUS National Championship won playing a full slate of real teams and recognized by EVERY major national organization of the day...

    BYU's 1984 record versus major college teams - 13-0

over a dubious NCAA championship won playing the weakest field in NCAA tournament history after playing an entire slate of pickup games.

    Utah's 1944 record versus major college teams - 4-1

Thanks for bringing up our NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in football. I'm glad that still rings true with ute fans. Sometimes I forget what it was like in 1984 but the ute fans always like to bring it up to remind me that BYU was NATIONAL CHAMPIONS in football. Good times.

    @Rose Bowl call yet?

And how close are you to accomplishing your "Quest"?

Utah in the MWC finished #2, had 16 first place AP votes. That was the highest ranked mid-major since BYU backed into a national title in 1984.

In 2011, BYU was a title contender ONLY in Provo. BYU was "long shot" to win the tournament with or without Davis according to Yahoo Sports and Las Vegas Hilton:

    BYU Cougars: 75-1 odds

One word gives BYU a shot to make a deep run and a worthy long shot bet, Jimmer. Jimmer Fredette has carried this average team to the NCAA Tournament and now he will be charged with taking them to NCAA Tournament Finals. Can he do it? Most teams will work to hold Fredette off his game and use the semi proven strategy to contain Jimmer. BYU is the best long shot bet on the board to win the NCAA Tournament.

Do you really get to count it as 20 wins with that preseason schedule?

    --------------

Yes, as long as you still consider 1984 a national title.

And as long as BYU gets to count their WCC schedule.

"It's hilarious the arrogance of Utah fans thinking that one double-digit head-to-head win on your home floor has somehow returned Utah to its Majerus era dominance."

    Notes:
    1) That "double digit" loss the Utes pasted on your cougs was 17 points; a stark contrast to the blow win you and your byu fans predicted for byu

    2) No one has said that beating byu returns Utah to its Majerus era dominance; the Utes have more important opponents to deal with.

"btw, when was the last time Utah made any noise in the tournament?

If being a national championship contender in 2010 isn't "making noise", what is? Even with Davies suspended, BYU was one missed FT in regulation from advancing to the Elite Eight."

    Notes:
    1) It's been a long time since Utah has made noise in the tournament. In fact, it's been a very long time since the Utes have been to any post season tournament. Hence the reason for this article on which you are commenting

    2) byu was NC contender in 2010?? elimination in the Sweet 16 is hardly being in contention for the championship...regardless of the excuse.

    Check your facts.

You really think a conference bottom dweller like Utah, regardless of which conference they're in, has any chance of winning a college football national championship?

Let's review how close you've come so far:

    4-5, 3-6, 2-7... hmmmm???

Sorry to burst your crimson bubble, but even winning the PAC 12 won't guarantee U an invite to the playoffs. With four other power conference champions, the selection committee pick Florida St, Ohio St, Oklahoma, and Alabama, instead of Utah, if all had similar 0 or 1 loss records?

    --------------------

"...in basketball, Utah is four wins away from wearing the crown"

LOL! Every other conference tournament participant in the country has the same opportunity. So makes U special?

    @ Reno Cougs Fan 68

Winning the conf. tournament in basketball as a 5-6 seed is FAR more attainable and likely than a mid-major running the table and competing for an NC in football. The way the college football world is now, BYU has the same chance as New Mexico St. to win the national title. Whereas in basketball, Utah is four wins away from wearing the crown. That's the difference.

"Rose was handed a healthy program."

Rose was handed a program that had just finished 9-20, tied for BYU's worst record since their disastrous 1-25 season.

Of course, let's not let little details like that spoil a good story.

It's hilarious the arrogance of Utah fans thinking that one double-digit head-to-head win on your home floor has somehow returned Utah to its Majerus era dominance.

btw, when was the last time Utah made any noise in the tournament?

If being a national championship contender in 2010 isn't "making noise", what is? Even with Davies suspended, BYU was one missed FT in regulation from advancing to the Elite Eight.

Even Bogut couldn't get the Utes past the Sweet 16. So what exactly has Utah done in the Big Dance since 1998 that you would consider "making noise"?

"You are so right, 9 straight years of 20+ wins and going to either the Big Dance or NIT every year has us crying in our mugs of root beer and bowls of BYU creamery ice cream about the sorry state of our basketball program!!! Who can we get to replace Dave Rose?!!!"

Interesting. So where's the improvement? Rose was handed a healthy program. From 2006 - 2011 the Utah program was in the proverbial dumpster. Two years into his tenure at Utah, Coach K wiped the floor with your cougs and Rose still didn't learn anything about how the college game is played.

Going to the tournament (which has been a hit and miss for Rose) and making noise in the tournament are two completely different things. You might be satisfied with it but it is abundantly clear that Holmoe is selling byu down the road of mediocrity and little by little, byu fans are becoming content with it.

btw...it appears that the DN removed the comment by Max-was-right from this thread which is what I replied to.

Good luck to byu in the tournament. Rise and shout.

    My perspective,
You are so right, 9 straight years of 20+ wins and going to either the Big Dance or NIT every year has us crying in our mugs of root beer and bowls of BYU creamery ice cream about the sorry state of our basketball program!!! Who can we get to replace Dave Rose?!!! Utah has shown improvement and they even finally beat BYU for the first time in about 13 tries! Both programs are fine and in good hands!!! We the fans should sit back and enjoy the ride!!! Good luck to both teams in their quest for conference titles and invites to the Big Dance!!! Go Cougs!!! Rise Up!!!

    Two For Flinching,
How is that any different then Quest for perfection or trying to win another NC? All teams and players have team and personal goals! Do they all reach them? No!!!Should either schools stop having goals? No!!! Good luck to both schools in their quest to reach the Big Dance!!! Go Cougs!!! Rise Up!!!

Do you really get to count it as 20 wins with that preseason schedule?

That being said Coach K has things going in the right direction if there isn't a mass defection like in years past.

They might even make the NIT this year.

After no post season for football and I can't even remember the last time they had a post season in basketball, this might finally be the year.

    @ Max-was-right

He didn't predict Utah would win the PAC-12 tourney. He said they're going there with the intention of winning it. BIG difference.

  • Ken Sandy, UT
    March 6, 2014 3:48 p.m.

With how far we've come, one would be foolish to doubt his plans to win the tournament. I'd say Utah has as good of a chance as anyone in the Pac 12 to do it. We need it to go dancing, and we've got the talent and coaching to get it done.

I'm not saying its going to happen for sure, but it wouldnt surprise me in the least if we're dancing in a couple weeks.

“I’ve asked the guys to stay humble and hungry and see what we can do against the Cardinal,” Krystkowiak said.

What Coach K has done with this program in just two short years is nothing short of remarkable. He understands young men and what it takes to teach them. That is indeed a rare gift.

So good to see the Utes competing in a great conference.
So good to have our byu friends like Max-was-right in utter denial about the upward trajectory of our program and know that the year to year progress achieved by the Utes unmatched down South.

    Most important of all...
so good to see teams in our elite conference know that they have to bring their "A" game when they play the Utes.

Well done, Utes and Thanks, Coach K!!!

Humble, like the coach answering the question of how his team can make the NCAA tournament. Maybe look at the situation before remarking next time.
