Well, anything can happen in a conference tournament. Look at last night's
LMU victory. They really had no business beating Portland. But Portland decided
to turn the ball over 20+ times. Merry Christmas. LMU is short, short-handed,
and not a great outside shooting team. But if BYU handles the ball like Portland
did, the Cougs may be one and done. In the other side of the bracket, Gonzaga
has shown it is vulnerable this year. The Zags apparently don't match up
well against San Diego. It will be fun to see how it all shakes out. Who knows?
San Diego vs. LMU in the final? Nah.
@ ferrisbueller:Yes, I'm being totally realistic. And for the
reasons outlined and explained in my previous comment. Those reasons are all
objective and true. So yes, I am being real. Very real. It's you who has
not backed up your obviously biased anti-BYU sentiment with any reasoning
whatsoever. As such, it appears many more readers agree with my stance
than with yours.
"Its been over a decade since byu won a conference tournament.I think
that tells us how likely it is byu will win this tournament."Uh,
yes it does tell us how likely it is...from a statistical standpoint, it's
very likely. BYU is due for one.
NevadaCoug,I researched it. You can choose to believe me or not.Example of cherry picking: In the same Yahoo Sports article where byu is
mentioned as a "darkhorse" there's a very complimentary mention of
the Utes and their coach. 'nuff said.
"we all know that Gonzaga is still the favorite to win the
tournament."Source? Just because you state it, doesn't
mean it is a fact. Please give evidence to support your claim that Gonzaga is
still the favorite. If you can't provide published articles that support
your claim, then please retract it.Cherry picking compliments is
certainly better than having no sources at all.
Incessantly cherry picking compliments in various national services and turning
them into headlines in the DN is not beneficial to byu sports and misleading to
it's fans. Yes byu is on a roll going into their conference tournament and
everyone agrees that they are a favorite to reach the finals, but we all know
that Gonzaga is still the favorite to win the tournament.
byu's dancing by reaching conf ch game. However, 'til dr has the
light miraculously come on and decides D is vitally mandatory to incorporate
into his system, it would literally require a series miracles to occur for them
to ever seriously threaten a deep Tourney run. It's comparable
to how it inevitably ended up annually in the playoffs for my SUNS under
D'Antoni. Offensive fireworks pleasing our fanbase during the reg seas,
yet ultimately forced to bow down before the impenetrable D of the spurs come
playoff time."D wins championships!"Just simply
have the den broncos verify it for U, if you still remain unconvinced!
Tators....Ute or no Ute, just being realistic.
I may be wrong but I think Rose won a mwc tournament. Doesn't really
matter, teams play the best they can. You can't really predict. On a
given night almost any team can be another. I don't expect the Y to win
but I hope they do well.
This article says nothing about Utah but since chrisb loves to give his own
predictions which are more often wrong than right here is why B.Y.U. has a
better chance than Utah of going to the big dance. Against the top four in
their conference B.Y.U. swept St.Mary's swept San Francisco and split with
Gonzaga. B.Y.U. has beaten Stanford on the road and and Texas in a pre-season
tournament. In that tournament they were runner up to Wichita St. who is
undefeated and a most likey #1 seed. The schedule you can't control which
is your pre-season schedule gives B.Y.U. a big advantage over Utah. Utah hurt
themselves by playing a weak non-conference schedule. Utah needs to win their
last two road games to offset a weak non conference schedule. That is a hard
task since their only road win is a win at USC who is the worst team in the PAC
12. I hate to break it to all the B.Y.U. haters the bad news but B.Y.U. has a
better shot at going dancing.
CB,FAIL on your comment about conference championships. Check your facts.
BYU picked to win the WCC Tournament. That is what the headline says. There is nothing about Utah. I don't care about Utah. Anything about
the Utes is irrelevant when addressing this topic. End of discussion.
I hope BYU wins the tournament but CB is right.I think Dave Rose is a good
coach, but he is not a great tournament coach even going back to his Dixie State
days when he had one of the top programs in Junior College.
CBUnlike the MWC tournament, the WCC tournament isn't played on
any team's home court - it makes a BIG difference when you have to beat a
conference opponent on their home home court - as Utah has proven time after
time after time.
After watching Gonzaga completely destroy St Mary's at St Mary's in
the season closer, I'd have to say the WCC tournament is theirs to lose.
You can bet that Mark Few is not relying on the hope of an at-large bid. He and
the Zags are going to Las Vegas to win it, and after that last game they are
riding on a lot of momentum going into the WCC tournament.Realistically
I'd have to give the edge to Gonzaga to win the WCC tournament, and
although I don't know, I'll bet the Las Vegas odds back me on that.
That's foolishness. Gonzaga is the team to beat. And as a big BYU fan,
I'd prefer to see them come into the tournament with something to prove
(which is the case) rather than as the favorite (which they are not). Good luck to BYU and Utah -- both teams are going to need it. I'd love
to see the state of Utah well represented at the tourney. Here's to Weber
and Utah State as well.
@ Chris B,Since you brought up the subject, how many tournament
championships has Utah earned since Dave Rose has been the head coach at BYU?
The answer will help keep your critical comment in context. Also,
what is Utah's win-loss record against BYU since Dave Rose became
BYU's head coach? It would be nice to know for comparative purposes. That
might also give us a better indicator as to the real-world quality of coach that
Dave Rose is. As they say, people that live in glass houses
shouldn't throw stones. But the temptation often seems too great for
you.For the record, I hope all teams from the state of Utah do well
this next week and as many as possible reach the NCAA's.
Chris B,Please remind us all how many PAC12 twines Coach K and the Utes
have cut down? Did I not read that Coach K has said that Utah will win the PAC12
tourney? Will be fun to watch and see if thee experts are right about BYU or if
Coach K and the haters are right about Utah!!! Good luck to both BYU and
UTAH!!!Go Cougs!!! Rise Up!!!
"I have as many conference tournament titles as Dave Rose"You're also about as bright as Pete Rose when it comes to picking your
own team's games.
This we know for sure: utah will not win a conference championship this year, or
anytime soon. And I like the way they "pounded" utah's baseball
team. But I digress. The Cougars definitely have the momentum going
into the WCC Tournament. The way Dave Rose has tinkered with the starting
lineups the past few games has proven to be very profitable and very effective
and has resulted in wins.
@ Chris B:From what I've observed and read from others, your
number of correct sports predictions isn't much higher than Dave
Rose's conference tournament championships. So based on those
numbers, I'd rather wait and see what happens than put too much credence in
your biased prediction. But thanks for playing. One other thing.
BYU's chances of getting in the NCAA tournament is a lot higher than
Utah's chances. Or so says Las Vegas and everyone else without an agenda.
Do you happen to have an agenda or bias toward or against any particular teams,
Strange BYU is picked to win the tourney, even if they ended the season well.
Two things seem rather obvious...1) Jeff Borzello is not a Ute.
And...2) ferrisbueller probably is.If ferrisbueller
wasn't a ute fan, he's be able to understand that BYU has more
momentum than any other WCC team going into the tournament, having recently
beaten the other upper-tier teams. And I believe they're the only one with
a 4 game (and counting) winning streak. Momentum translates into confidence.
And earned, genuine confidence wins a lot of games. And that's
Seriously? Really? Dream on.
Most bracketologists project BYU in the tournament as long as the Cougars make
it to the WCC championship game. Of course, winning the championship game would
eliminate any chance of BYU not being invited to the Big Dance.
BYU will hopefully give a strong showing no matter what, and at least make it to
I have as many conference tournament championships as Dave Rose does. Its been over a decade since byu won a conference tournament.I
think that tells us how likely it is byu will win this tournament. Its choke after choke for byu in their conference tournaments. And
considering the wcc is a bad league, that says something
BYU is picked to win the West Coast Conference tournament and would be better
off doing so rather than leaving their NCAA hopes in the hands of the Selection
