If byu can't beat pacific community college on the road, the Gaels will be
St Mary up 11-4 already Lol. Game over
Byu was in this game for about a minute. 19-9Lol!
"I don't like to complain about the refs, but this is ridiculous. Saint
Mary's is getting away with murder."No, they're not.
The Gaels are just out-playing BYU right now.
Please someone explain how Waldo can but all the way into the key and if BYU
touches him its a foul
Lafe, stop whining about the refs. At the half:BYU - 9
foulsSMC - 8 fouls
Wow. If any BYU fans complain about the officials after that.....
Yeah baby! Onward and Upward
See cougars this is what happens when you play DEFENSE great come from behind
victory in spite of what CB says.
Nice win against some pretty bad officiating in the first half. Thank goodness
the refs backed off and did not target Mica the 2nd half. They played some of
the bet defense I have seen all year long in the 2nd half. With this win ESPN
has BYU in the tourney. Keep it up Cougs
It's probably too little too late, but a great effort by the cougs tonight.
Glad to see them pull out the victory.
Nice win fellas! I didn't think they'd win after that first half.
The Cougars got the "W" in spite of the ref's best effort to give
the game to Saint Mary's. Good job Cougars!!
Both teams showed their true character tonight. BYU overcame adversity and rose
up in the second half and utah fell flat on their face. How many more
times can CB be wrong in one season?
Hi Chris,Pacific Community College beat USU in Logan this year.
When was the last time the Utes did that? Anyway, this was a great win for BYU.
More specific, a great road win.
Only saw the second half, but what I saw was impressive. Congrats to the Cougs
on a gut check win.Tough day for my Utes.
Great comeback win for the Cougars! Played a tough, energetic second half.
Fortunately, the usual poor free throw shooting didn't cost the game. A
great confidence boost going into the Gonzaga game.
Looks like someone got caught with their foot in their mouth :)
BYU won by playing the least lousy. But you really have to admire the grit and
determination of BYU to climb out of the hole when everything was going against
them. The officiating and their protection of Waldow and utter
disdain for Mika was just embarrassing.I think all but one of the fouls
called on him were phantom. And most of the calls on the other bigs involving
Waldow were equally ridiculous.Glad to see Collinsworth is oK. I
think we all collectively held our breath on that one.
Great win for the Cougs! For the time being, ESPN has them back in the tourney.
Ya the Gaels are going to be way too much for this BYU team to handle... But being serious, this BYU team is so unpredictable. Like it's been all
season long, they have to play better D and shoot from the free throw line
better. They made this game way too close because of missed free throws down
the stretch. Let's come back home get a W against the zags and
hopefully make the tourney!! Go Cougs!!
Chris B,Wrong again. We see this played out regularly
with your "predictions". Mark it down.
Fouling the other team when you are up 3? Ridiculous basketball. I know a lot
of teams are doing it, but it's not a good idea. You are basically giving
them an advance of 40+ feet up the floor with no time off the clock; and free
shots too! How about just playing defense and slowing their progress up the
court so they can't get a good look at a three? Wouldn't that make a
bit more sense? It's not like Delly is still playing for them.Great win for the Cougars. They didn't deserve it, what with all the
missed free throws and the rebounding issues. However, win they did. It's
a big boost after dropping a horrible game to Pacific. (In fact, I really think
they were looking past Pacific.)Now follow the Women's lead and
upset Gonzaga. It would be a huge step towards getting back on the right side
of the bubble.
@Chris B sound like when they had the early lead over the ASU in football.
Just when we write these cougars off..snake-bit or whatever ...they send the
message...don't write us off...not yet!!! Chris B. guess it's you who
is snake-bit !!
Well, this win was a gutty, grind-it-out, show your character kind of game for
the Cougars.I was stunned, frankly, that BYU could make a game of it
after such a poor start. Collinsworth's injury in the first half looked
like it could have ended his career -- but he came back, despite the injury, to
play a strong game.Worthington and Winder both showed up when called
upon. Mika seems to have virtually disappeared as a contributor. Haws stays
steady and Austin keeps sucking in those rebounds.I kind of figured
along the lines of the famous "Chris B" and thought the Cougars would
mail this one in. I like what I saw in this victory. "Sorry to disappoint
you, CB." [NOT!!!!!!]
Way to go Cougs! Thought we were out of this game, but you have to hand it to
the boys in blue. Special props to coach Rose for making adjustments, and
really pressuring the ball on the end of defensive posessions. He really did
well to keep the team together.Waldow is a beast, but St.
Mary's has slipped this year. Not having the combined D and O of Delly is
really taking a toll on their game.I don't think this is enough
to get us back on the bubble. I think we still have to win the tourney. But, I
now think we can do it. The team is playing much tougher than they did against
Pacific. I really find Chris B's comments so funny. He is
totally addicted to commenting on BYU sports. BYU is 1-1 against Pac-10 teams
on the road this year.
What was the choke Mika did all about?
Sorry Chris, maybe next time. BYU doesn't deserve this win. Mighty lucky,
especially with such dismal free-throw shooting. I wonder where this team ranks
among Y teams from years past in terms of FT percentage. This was another one
where poor FT shooting almost put another L in the loss column. Go Cougs!
Overall, the WCC plays better defense that the Mtn. West. The game scores are
usually fairly low. For the past three years, I've been saying that the
Cougars need to learn how to play half court offense or they'll have a hard
time surviving in this league. Tonight, the Cougars did play great half court
offense and defense in the second half. Free throw shooting percentage still
needs a lot of work!
Flinching We won. Your team lost. And those make me happy. I am glad
you are upset tonight.
Beating SMC on the road for second place - fantastic.Beating SMC on
Delavudova Night - priceless.
No question we saw a final four team tonight....no question...Gooo Cougars
Thanks goodness Chris got on here first. As soon as he predicted a loss, I knew
BYU had it in the bag. Thanks again Chris. You are indeed BYU's good luck
charm. Good times.Go Cougars!
Chris B is just the Ute Football and Basketball teams. Chris
continues to make early and silly comments before a game is over then he fizzle
out at the end of the game due to his embarrasment. Utah Football and
basketball teams get a win here and there but they continue to fizzle out at the
end of their season. When your favorite team can't go
"BOWLing" or make it to the *Big Dance", then all you have left is
your hope that Big Brother down South will also join your team by not being able
make it to Bowl/or the Big Dance.
We would of won saint mary if we played them tonight because we are an awsome
road team lol.Go Utes
Chris B.1.) I don't comment very often, but when will your
comments have fullness and not be full of fallacious reasoning. Simply because
it is BYU. Your use so much fallacious reasoning in all of your comments voids
any credibility that your claims have, not just the articles where you express
your love of the Utes and displeasure of BYU.2.) have you ever left
a positive comment?3.) I am all for open dialog and views of others,
I appreciate your willingness to express the view from your side but you have to
cut out the fallacious reasoning and logic.P.S. BYU won the game.
and its pacific University
Chris B. Are you just an internet troll on Desnews. It seems like your
opinion is always opposite what everyone else says on every article.
Nice win Cougars. But ESPN really disrespected both teams by having their
sportscasters flap the breeze with Dellavedova for at least 10 minutes instead
of calling the game that just happened to be going on in the background. Way too
much of this in sports TV "journalism". Isn't it about the game
I know I'm not supposed to complain about the refs, but what is their
problem? If they can't cll the game without bias, then get out of the
business. A win is a win, and a road win is even better. this team can't
take any games off, I want to see them this tough all through the tourney! go
Always a fun time to see the naysayers eat crow. Way to pull this
one out on the road guys. 5 on 8 that first half was a little much! LOL
I seems that Chris and the utes forgot that there IS a second half of
basketball. How funny. The Cougars man up and fight for the win and the utes
lay down in the second half. Like Down said, the two teams showed their true
color tonight.Way to go Cougs.
@ Sports Are GreatI'm not upset at all. I actually had a
pretty great night/weekend.
A little surprised that BYU is playing against teams with gyms that only seat
3,500...many high school gyms seat more than this.
BYU won on the road despite bad free-throw shooting, giving up way too many
offensive rebounds, and making only one three-pointer in the entire game. I
don't know how much one can credit BYU's defense with St. Mary's
abysmal shooting in the second half, but it obviously was the difference in the
Probably a good thing Collinsworth fouled out. I don't think the Coaches
would have had the guts to take him out when the game was on the line.
That's right, on the line. Making those free throws at the end sealed this
Tale of the Tape#46 BYU(18-10) #26 SOS, currently projected to be a
#11 seed facing #7 seed UCLA6-6 versus RPI Top 100, including THREE
road/neutral wins#92 Utah(17-8) #172 SOS, on the outside looking

with all the talent on this team and the poor and inconsistent play why
isn't Rose on the hot seat. This team should be so much better and if we
played defense we would be ranked.
People who worry about the size of arena a team plays in must have an
inferiority complex. Otherwise, who cares?
Nice road win Cougs. Congrats. Note to Eric Mika: Can't wait to get you on
a mission. That little stunt you pulled (on national TV) after the final buzzer
was cheap and immature. That's not how Cougars act. Grow up son!
By reading the comments it's apparent that even when BYU wins they get
cheated by the refs.It was a good come from behind victory. Love
the chock sign at the end of the game by a BYU player, was Crabtree in
St. Mary's could compete in the Pac easily. Nice win Cougs. Now my Dukies
need to take out the Tarheels
@lininlargeIt is true that the gyms on average are smaller than the
average PAC 12 gym. But have you noticed that they are full. Bet BYU plays
before an average crowd size that equals or exceeds the Utes. 10,000 seat arena
at 30% capacity still only means 3000 attendees. Do the math.
Why isn't Rose on the hot seat? What a ridiculous question - clearly
coming from a Ute. As much as you want him as your coach, it is happening!
Good win.Mark it down.
I wouldn't call this a pretty win, but it was a courageous win. I'm
still perplexed by the Pacific game. Who knows what will happen from here.
My favorite numbers following the weekend games: A) 13... (8-5)...
61.5% B) 12... (6-6)... 50% C) 11... (4-7)... 36% D) 8...
(5-3)... 62.5% Then: M) 16... (11-5)... 68.8% N)
13... (5-8)... 62.5% And a couple of my favorite equations: Y) 4+1 = 5 = 18% Z) 7+2 = 9 = 36% I like these numbers in
connection with a potential invite to the Dance and here's why.
A) The Total number of games that UCLA (a definite invitee)has played against
the top 100 RPI teams and their record and winning percentage. B, C, and
D.) Same description for BYU,utah and St.Mary's. The
significance of these numbers is that of the 4 teams were paired against each
other this weekend... St. Mary's has the highest winning % and 2 of their 3
top 100RPI losses were to BYU. M & N) Again, the same
description for Texas and Stanford... BYU has beaten both these teams on the
road. And Y & Z describe BYU's wins and Utah's wins
against teams above RPI 200 plus teams from lower division schools with no RPI.
The percentage represents percent of their respective schedules that these games
@uteology... My criticism of the refs in the WCC is that they are
inconsistent (more so than in most conferences)... And they blow their whistle
way too much (I see that in pac12 officiating as well)... They don't always
let the players determine the outcome... In both the Pacific game
and the first half of the St. Mary's game it just seemed like the Refs
wanted center stage instead of the players... In Stockton against Pacific there
were 50 fouls called in a 40 minute game... Ridiculous... All we did was watch
the Refs and the players march from one end of the floor to the other for close
to 3 hours. I believe the rules allow the Bigs to check their man
with a forearm when he is being backed down to the basket... In the first half,
that wasn't allowed (at least for BYU it wasn't)... After the game I
tuned into SF at Santa Clara and those Refs let the players play... It makes the
game much more enjoyable to watch. The Pacific game was both frustrating and
boring... Foul shooting should not occupy 60% to 70% of a two+ hour Basketball
game at any level.
When Collinsworth fouled out I told my wife that now the cougars would probably
win the game since he is the guy who can't hit free throws at the end of
the game. I like the kid and he is gutsy but I don't think he should be in
at the end of any close games.
Oooops... Letter "N" is Stanford with 13 games against RPI top 100 and
their winning percentage is not 62.5% but rather 38.5%, yet many brackets have
them getting an invite.
Waldow is allowed to batter his way to the basket every time. Opponents
can't lay a finger on him or it's a foul. In the NBA, he'd be
gone in six possessions. In the WCC he's a "dominating player."Enforce the "Charles Barkley" rule the NBA finally passed to end
bulky players bashing their way to the hoop for a layup in the WCC and St.
Mary's would be a middle of the conference team. BYU would also be able to
keep their big men on the court.Honestly, people are paying to watch
the players play, not the refs call every phantom touch while ignoring
Waldow's imitation of a football player smashing into a practice rack over
and over again. How about some consistency? How about calling FOULS. St.
Mary's was 14-1 at home because they play 8 on 5.BYU would have
3 more wins if they could hit free throws - Iowa State, Oregon, and Portland.
They'd be 11-4 in the WCC, 21-7 overall with two more wins in the top 100,
and solidly in the NCAA tournament. Practice guys!
Funny how Chris b's comments always get posted no matter how off topic and
against all the supposed civil dialogue rules it is. but if you try to reply to
him/her, it will never get posted
After watching the whole game before pre-judging the outcome, I've decided
that the best way for me to enjoy seeing the Cougars play is to:1. Wait
until the second half to begin watching the game--or just watch the last ten
minutes.2. Lower my expectations. They really aren't as good as I
think they are---or should be.3. Expect the referees to treat Mika and
Austin with critical eyes.4. Expect the team to be out-coached by
opposing teams.5. Just relax and enjoy any win--good, bad or just
ugly.Whew! Now I can have fun watching BYU basketball again!!!!
I think the cougs need to guard the ball more closely and live with getting beat
off the dribble once in a whiile. Better than giving the opponenent easy assess
to its offense. the oponement makes too many easy passes to get the BYU
zone to finally miss a rotation assignment, which leads to an open 3 pt shot.
When I watch Syracuse play zone, they harass the passing lanes out front all day
long. Secondly, I think we need to figure out how to play the high
pick/roll used constantly against us. I think we switch until we get burned by
a 3-pt bucket. we used to hedge the hight pic with a big man, but that leads to
foul trouble we can't afford. I like it when the cougs play their 1-3-1
trap zone; not a steady diet, but a little more often to keep them guessing.
@ VegasbobUtah is averaging 10,000 per game this season....Also, according to the NCAA attendance summary, the PAC-12 is averaging 7,143
people per game. Doing the math, that is quite a bit more than all but one WCC
arena can handle....
Watching BYU get beat up in the first half, I kept thinking, "they're
still not playing that bad..." If they could only keep hammering, maybe the
Gaels would blink. I never thought it would take soooo long, but St. Mary's
finally did blink at the end, and the shackles were off!Been nice to
see Utah's respectable year. Good luck to both this week! Good luck
@Two For Flinching"Utah is averaging 10,000 per game this
season..."I checked the stats on the U of U athletic site. They
show Utah's average at 9,605. BYU is averaging 15,473 accordidng to their
athletic site. On the road, Utah is averaging 7,890 to BYU's 6,375.
Utah's all-game average is 9,011 while BYU's is 10,599.
