Really? I'm pretty sure it's about 17 points worse....

That has everything to do with Weber being in the Big Sky and Utah being in the PAC-12. But you already knew that....

    RPI rankings:

    Utah: 92
    Weber: 164

    BPI:

    Utah: 39
    Weber: 143

    Utah > Weber

RPI trumps BPI when it comes to NCAA selection committee comparisons:

#44 BYU MUCH BETTER than #92 Utah

No need for cherry picking; most of the experts have BYU IN the tourney; Utah on the outside looking in.

    Please read my posts.

At no point did I every mention BYU.

Gone Fishin challenged by claim that Utah was making progress in improving from last year to this year.

I was comparing Utah to itself, not any other team.

I think it is quite obvious that Utah is improved over last year. I don't care about BYU, and this is a Utah article.

    That is all.

    "Better record versus D1 teams
    BYU(17-10) > Utah(15-8)"

Where did you go to school? 63% (17-10) is not greater than or even equal to 65% (15-8).

    How about these ones?

    #42 Utah>#54 BYU
    #39 Utah>#49 BYU

Convenient to cherry pick whatever sources make your favorite team look good, isn't it?

"By any objective measure the Utes are better this year..."

    Better record versus D1 teams
    BYU(17-10) > Utah(15-8)

Better record versus RPI Top 100
    BYU(6-6) > Utah(4-7)

    Better road/neutral record
    BYU(6-9) > Utah(1-7)

It's quite obvious, when factors considered important by the selection committee are examined, BYU is better than U.

    #44 BYU (SOS #25) > #92 Utah (SOS #173)

Both BYU and Utah have both had missed opportunites this season. Win a few more close games and both teams would be in a much better position. Seems that some of the posters also need a reminder that utah played just 1 out of conference road game...And lost to Boise state otherewise known as the 6th place team in the MWC. Boise state also lost to the 3rd place team in the WCC. Makes it kind of hard to say that Utah would be winning more games if they were playing in the MWC or WCC...

    Gone Fishin

Really? By any objective measure the Utes are better this year

    Better overall record. Check

    Better Pac-12 record. Check

Yesterday's game was their first double digit loss of the season.

    So yes, that's progress.

20 wins is absolutely a possibility.

The Utes are very good at home and, given how tightly they played Col, AZ and ASU on the road, I think they have as good a chance as any to win those games.

Cal and Stanford are good, but aren't unbeatable, so it's entirely possible Utah steals one on the road

Then there is the Pac-12 tourney where Utah got 2 victories last year.

All in all the potential for 3 more wins is certainly there, and I think it is likely that they get them.

YOU are the person who mentioned the NCAA tourney. I think Utah would have to win out and put together a semi-final run in the PAC 12 tourney at least to get the NCAA tourney, and I don't think that will happen. I do think they have a very good shot at the NIT however, and that would be great and another sign of progress.

@sportsfan you lost head to head and Utah destroyed the #2 team in the wcc. You aldo lost to Pepperdine pacific loyal moaromont and Portland. Utah loses are to tougher competition in the #3 conference. You can try to justify byus luckluster performance and conference affiliation but Utah beat you head to head by 17. Your team failed on the court and the field.

At rose bowl Utah has recruited the talent were the had the most issues st db and w. The speed they brought in will change the offense production and if Christensen can change the Ute offense like he did at MO Utah will be in the rose bowl soon enough. After all Utahs defense is already a PAC12 defense. Just think you'll still be independent and looking in. Its nice that the big5 will now have more autonomy. They will also have more teams in bowl games giving the mid majors less
. Have fun being independent and trying to be part of the PAC by scheduling them each year. Because I know you byu fans are jealous of Utah and it shows

Salt Lake City, UT The fact of the matter is that BYU,USU,and WEBER STATE all have more road wins than Utah but all you Ute fans are delusional and still think you have the best team in the country, when in reality you dont even have the best team in the state you talk about BYU playing high school teams ,well it looks to me like Utah played nothing but H S teams in their pre season except 2 therefore they will not be going to the ncaa tournament the announcers on the pac 12 network even said as much, their sos sucks and that is hills fault

    Feb. 16, 2014 12:38 p.m.

The BB I watch in the Pac-12 is such an upgrade over the MWC. Oddly, BYU fans are equally excited about their move to the WCC. Coming near the top of the WCC creates so much excitement. I wonder if there is a league even lower that would allow them to win it all once in a while.
Tough job for the tournament committee to compare the records of teams that play in the majors against those in the mid majors like the MWC and the Atlantic 10. Imagine the difficulty with the comparison all the way down to leagues like the WCC and the Big West.
Out of 33 conferences all but two all the way down to the MEAC did get a chance to beat a ‘top 100’ team in the pre season. There are great opportunities for the lower conferences to catch a school with a name in a pre season game and beat them while they are trying to develop their players.

  • Crow Sandy , UT
    Feb. 16, 2014 11:27 a.m.

@Stanfunky isn't byu of the wcc playing a much easier schedule in conference play yet they lost on the road to Portland Pepperdine loyal maramont and pacific. Bug when Utah loses to a top program in UCLA their fans pile on in desperation to justify beating a poor St. Marys team. Got to love the direction the two programs are heading

  • Crow Sandy , UT
    Feb. 16, 2014 11:19 a.m.

@joe schmoe AZ could not beat Utah by 20 at home and ESPN is only giving AZ a 42% chance to win at Utah. Stanford lost to the #2 team in the wcc so they should be a push over. Utah will get their revenge on ASU next week.

again your smack failed your football and basketball teams both failed on the field and court. Utah is the better program we proved it head to head and being in a far superior conference

  • Kiboo South Jordan, Utah

Winning on the road is tough at any level, unless you have a very, very good team. Clearly we do not have this in the state of Utah this year. Had coach k properly prepared his team for the conference season however, this might have been a "special" year for the Utes. Coach messed up.

@anti Chris There are two experts articles I read Joe launardi and the experts in Vegas who put out their braketology they have been pretty good in the past of selecting the teams but they had Utah as a 12seed and Joe said in his article about the Pac if Utah won this week it would gave them a good case to be in the tournament

  • Crow Sandy , UT
    Feb. 16, 2014 11:02 a.m.

@downunder byu is the second place team in a very poor conference. Utah destroyed that conferences 2nd place team by 17. Utah would dominate the wcc and would not lose to pacific, peperdine, loyal Marymount or st marys. Unlike byu Utah can play defense against their opponents.

I liken the wcc conference and their teams to Utahs preseason schedule. If Utah played in the wcc it would just be another tune up but only before the NCAA tournament.

    Pocyute,
There is no way utah wins 20 games this year. LOL
IF u had played a normal basketball schedule with a few games on the road against decent teaks then u would have 7 less wins and be setting at about 10 wins. Just so you know the selection committee watches this sort of stuff when making the pairings for the tourney. 9 cupcake wins against the DEAD LAST worst preseason schedule is not progress. Most high school teams could have had he same record.

Utah just has to beat Arizona, ASU, Colorado at home in the next 3 games then they will be on the bubble. should win these 3 against very high rpi teams to bump utans rip from 92 to in the 40's then split at Cal and stanford in the last week and Utah is dancing.

  • 10CC Bountiful, UT
    Feb. 16, 2014 9:58 a.m.

Credit UCLA for applying defensive pressure where it had an impact.

Arizona's coach, Sean Miller, nailed it a few weeks back when he said the PAC-12 is full of coaches who are very, very good, and they'll take away multiple offensive options a team has previously established.

UCLA did a great job of limiting Taylor and Tucker's open looks at threes, Wright had a very slow start offensively because his drive game was mostly taken away, and Loveridge just didn't find any kind of offensive groove. (Delon found other ways to score, as usual, and had an overall great game, especially defensively. I counted 5 blocks, not 3.)

Against the upper tier PAC teams on the road, having only one guy in double-figures, this spells a loss, for this Utah team.

The Utes need to shake it off and get ready to defend their court at the Hunty.

There's zero room for sulking in this league. Hopefully the Utes can find one more road win in NorCal.

    The Anti Chris said:

"Is there any division 1 team with a worse road record in the entire country than the u? Does anyone know? I could not find one."

Considering there are 2 other teams in the PAC-12 with the same road record as the Utes (1-7) and 2 others with 2-7 road marks, seems par for the course in a difficult conference. BTW, Utah doesn't have the worst record in the state among D1 teams, that would be Southern Utah at 0-14. BYU (4-7) and Utah State (3-5) and Weber State (3-6) aren't much better on the road, either.

And yes, there are other D1 teams with worse road marks than the U. Check the ACC & SEC standings. Also don't forget - there are MANY conferences considered D1 in Men's basketball, check the mid-major conferences, there are quite a few horrendous road teams in those, who are playing weaker schedules than the U.

Bummer of a loss, but UCLA is really tough at home.

A 20 win season is still very much in reach. Utah can beat AZ, but they HAVE to rebound. AZ isn't a great shooting team, but they got soooo many 2nd chance points in Tucson.

Cal and ASU are winnable games, but again, the Utes can't take anything for granted.

2 years ago I would have thought a 20 win season this soon into the rebuilding process would be a pipe dream, even with the cupcake schedules they've had over the past 2 seasons.

Coach K is definitely ahead of schedule, and the trajectory is headed up.

If this team can win Pac-12 games on the road even at .250 clip it'll be like Happy Gilmore learning to putt. I just hope a rouge Volkswagen doesn't run us down on the fairway.

    Feb. 15, 2014 11:09 p.m.

Rough outing and what is troubling is this team seems to be going the opposite direction on the defensive side of the ball. They were stronger defensively early in PAC 12 than they have been in recent weeks. When the offense is struggling, the defense doesn't seem to pick it up.

I thought a split in LA would be a successful road trip. I'm looking forward to being in the Huntsman Center this Wednesday for a very loud Utah crowd.

Some Cougar fans are getting desperate. All they had to do to punch their ticket to the NCAA after some quality early season wins was sweep the likes or Portland, Pepperdine, Pacific, and San Diego and have at least be competitive against the Zags. Another mediocre season against mediocre competition.

That being said, the utes doomed themselves to not even have a chance at the tourney before league play even started. The Dr. scheduled games that were sure wins trying to build some confidence in the team and in the coach. The Dr. couldn't have yet another unsuccessful coach at the help.
