Well written, Joseph, and a great observation. In fact, our gratitude for those who have served in defense of this nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic, is so great that we have Veterans Day in their honor. And for those who in so doing lost their lives, the original intent of Memorial Day was to honor those soldiers.

There was a bill introduced in Congress in 1968 called the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that moved several holiday observances to Monday. An early draft included designating this day as Presidents Day in an attempt to consolidate the remembrance of both Lincoln and Washington, but it failed in committee. The final draft that passed into law designates this as Washington's Birthday. So, technically there never has been a holiday officially called Presidents Day.
