Great article T. Phibbs!! B. Matich has done a wonderful job with that football program. I have been inspired by his dedication, resilience and perseverance since taking over. Big Ups Brandon from your peeps in the Lou!! Bring on Part II!!

I'd like to hear about other programs every once in awhile. It seems like the local media here covers East way more than their fair share. Trevor, while you're covering Coach Matich, are you going to share about the sportsmanship he displayed at the end of the state championship game? I know I was surprised and disappointed. Oh I'm sure that's something you somehow missed though during your love fest. I will say the East players appeared to show respect after a disappointing loss which I commend them for.

When you're a winner, you get press. Matich is a machine. He wants to win. You can't just find the off switch in a disappointing loss all the time. The East players' behavior was a reflection of Matich's leadership. Let's not forget that. The other programs need to step it up a little and start demolishing teams like East did. Look T.Phibbs!! Bring on Part II man!! Talk about what happened last year and what those boys had to endure. Talk about the hell Brandon went through in dealing with that whole thing. Talk about how they made it through that and came back even stronger!! Make it 7 pages this time ;-).

"East finally had the coach who could exhume the moribund program back into greatness"

East was not a morbid program. The year prior to Brandon's arrival was a fluke. It was a lousy record, coached by the hall monitor who was hired b/c he had previously played college football. The year before that (2008), East won the region. The 5 years prior included playoff appearances every season, 2 state semi finals appearances, and multiple all state selections. And the 8 years before that East made playoffs 6 times, won a state championship, went to semi finals once, and had multiple players go onto D1 scholarships at BYU, Utah and Oregon. Some even played in the NFL.

Brandon is a great coach and has been awesome at East. But the press you are giving him as the savior of the program is completely undue. We are happy for what he is doing, and I would argue he is one of the best coaches in the state, but he did not resurrect a morbid program. Did he turn the team around after a terrible year? Yes! But the program has been strong since Keeko took over in the 90's.
