There's a real dichotomy in the Olympics these days which makes it less compelling and interesting than it used to be. NBA and NHL players participate and even some sports that used to be considered more pristine (e.g alpine skiing) have competitors that are "sponsored" and are as much professional athletes as any NBA or NHL player...e.g. Lindsey Vonn's publicist was active in providing information about her injury and status...it's hard to conjure up the interest we used to have for amateur Olympic athletes for NHL players or athletes with publicists.

By contrast, cross-country skiing and biathlon athletes (at least those in the US) are still of the ilk of athletes that competed in those sports 50 years ago but those sports(perhaps because they're not made for TV like the half-pipe) get little coverage, as do their athletes, and at this point are little more than a footnote to the Games.
