Unless you have scientific proof that those industries you so despise are more than 11% of the pollution, stop with this propaganda campaign. Are the state and the EPA both lying? Nothing will be accomplished on this issue until you are willing to actually deal with facts.

I find it ironic that people want jobs but when industry moves in their communities with jobs, people whine about industry. Perhaps you should never allow any industry in your town but then, where will you find work? Environmental laws have become so very restrictive on industry, its amazing any industry can exist!

Louis.... you have a hard time understanding how hundreds of thousands of vehicles can produce more emissions than 4 highly regulated industries...? And what if industry does produce more than 11 percent.... that still doesn't take away the need to reduce emissions at the personal level.

I this last year went from driving a car to work as my daily driver that has over 500 horse power and averaged in the teens for milage, to one that gets me over 45 mpg on my commute, and has fewer that 200 horsepower. I did it not because of some grand social conscience, but because of economic benefit. I still have my high horsepower car, it is just garaged more... and I now burn less, and emit less, because the math was right.

Producing less emissions doesn't mean you have to make this grand sacrifice. It just means being smarter in the things you do. Stop blaming "industry" and start doing what you can do. If you want the refineries to emit less... buy less. Its that simple.

The furnaces and cars for a million people, and you want to blame 3 industries for all the pollution?

Look around you. You might realize that when it comes to pollution, we all contribute a little collectively making a lot.

This letter takes the wrong angle at this problem. The Governor says that in 40 years the population of Utah will be six million. That alone is a staggering number, but the response needed must be as large. NO SOURCE of pollution (PM2 Winter and Ozone Summer) can be overlooked if we are to avoid the fate of Chinese cities. Everyone including industries need to submit plans for reductions large and small if this place is to be livable for our children and grandchildren. A real effort to educate the public on the problem and potential solutions needs to be undertaken however education issues have been as problematic as pollution discussions in Utah. Hey maybe the Eagle Forum will take up this cause as part of their fight to eliminate the Common Core for schools!

Why is it so important to you that we be able to blame this on Industry? So YOU don't have to change? So YOU don't have to do anything different? So you can sit smug in your car just cursing those refineries, RioTinto (which is practically closed), while your metal car is idling in line to get more gas?

Why do some feel the need to find some research that will blame more of it on Industry, and partially dismiss the very clear statement that most of the pollution in our air during inversions comes from OUR tailpipes?

Is the fact that MOST of the pollution comes from OUR tailpipes unacceptable?

You can look and look for research that will indicate more of it comes from industry... but what does that really change??

It still comes right back to us!

You can't say "shut down the refineries" while you sit in your car burning the gas they provide. Or "Shut down RioTinto" while you use copper. Or "shutdown ALL industry", while you shop in stores and by the products they provide.

Solving our pollution problem is two-fold: (1) Identifying the sources and (2) identifying expedient ways to reduce those sources?

While cars/individuals may be the biggest source of pollution, it is easier to deal with a handful of factories at the source than hundreds of thousands of cars at countless sources. So even if 11 percent of the pollution is from a handful of factories, it is prudent to address those with solutions that can be instituted permanently (e.g., scrubbers in smokestacks) than relying on individual people's behavior (remembering not to idle, reduce trips, etc.).

Finally, just because you create jobs, it isn't a license to pollute.

One of the interesting things that came out of the recent research into the actual major causes of pollution - as opposed to the whipping boys identified in this letter - is that cold starts are a major source of pollution, largely because the catalytic converter isn't warmed up and the fuel injectors are running open loop. The obvious thing is to figure out a way to avoid cold starts, such as a car that can be plugged in 1/2 hour prior to start-up in order to electrically heat the catalytic converter and the engine block. Of course this wouldn't eliminate the pollution, it would just move it to the power plant providing the electricity (or the power plant that provided the electricity to make the windmills or solar panels), but having it out of the valley would be a good first step.

Ideally we could have a fast reactor "burning" spent fuel rods and other high-level radioactive waste to make electricity, thereby killing two birds with one stone.
