"Obama does best when he rallies the nation to unify"So in
other words, he never does best?
Some writers suggest that Obama is on the receiving end of unprecedented hatred.
I seem to recall a lot of hatred directed against Bush.
DSB,"....the reason his approval numbers are so low is because
people are disappointed at his lack of dictatorial governance. Just too much
respect for opposition. If he just sidesteps the Constitution and ignores the
Congress, and imposes his entire agenda by Executive Order, then the
independents will love him and Democrats will ride the wave to victory."______________________________Even if you're just being
sarcastic, your choice of words hit closer to the truth than you perhaps
realize. But you overreach in suggesting that use of Executive Orders sidesteps
the Constitution. That’s a legitimate power used by every President, none
more famously than Theodore Roosevelt who created the modern Presidency with an
unprecedented use of Executive Orders. The shutdown of Government
last October illustrates what Obama is up against with an opposition party whose
defining strategy for five years has been to thwart the President's agenda.
The GOP understandably would prefer a Barack Obama who would rather avoid a
fight than to unapologetically use the tools of his office.
@10CC - one thing you got right was in correctly pointing out that President
Obama's call for unity was a mere pretense. Always has been, always will
be. Unity for President Obama means to do it his way or no way at all.
Any pretense at seeking compromise or "unity" by Republicans were erased
early in Obama's first term, even his first evening as President, when key
GOP leaders announced their primary goal was to make Obama a one term president.
To their credit, they've been very consistent in opposing every single
item proposed by Obama, even after he was re-elected and their goal a failed
effort.Republicans whine and wail at Obama announcing he'll use
Executive Orders, when GOP Senate leaders used the filibuster more than any time
in history, while Obama's use of Executive order has been less than any
other president in over 100 years.Obama should absolutely use
Executive Orders to push forward the nation - what fool believes Republicans
would "unify" with him...on *anything*?Go forward, Mr
President. Don't look back, and don't waste time or energy trying to
win over those who sought your demise.
@Craig Clark - yeah, that'll work, because the reason his approval numbers
are so low is because people are disappointed at his lack of dictatorial
governance. Just too much respect for opposition. If he just sidesteps the
Constitution and ignores the Congress, and imposes his entire agenda by
Executive Order, then the independents will love him and Democrats will ride the
wave to victory.
"Time will tell whether he succeeded, but his defiant hint at using
executive orders will not unify the nation...."______________________________It may solidify his base and bring
swing voters to rally behind him in a tough election year.
Irony Guy:Obama has 3 more years. If he continues on this path; if
his approval rating continues to slide; and if more people are hurt by his
policies, then maybe...just maybe, the vitriol you describe might surpass that
thrown at President Bush by liberals during his presidency.I might
believe some of the shallow references to "unity" given by Obama if I
ever saw him actually make the attempt at compromise or even showing a smidgen
of respect for opinions that differ from his own. Actions speak much louder than
words. Sure the GOP has been reluctant to give an inch as well, but Obama
refuses to even listen to any proposals or ideas from conservatives even though
he constantly says "if anyone has a better idea, I want to hear it". He
doesn't really mean that.
Barack has brought the entire nation together with conservatives and liberals
finally seeing eye to eye and bipartisan solutions for the economy flowing out
of congress. At least that was the promise 5 years ago....
Esquire,What's even more annoying than the assumption that if you
don't like Obama... you're a racist... it's this assumption that
if you disagree with him on anything... you got it from Fox News.I
wish you guys would come back with some actual arguments of your own, some
logic, or some personal philosophy, or anything that would show you're
still thinking... instead of the bland ad hominem if you disagree...
"you're racist", or "You listen to AM radio"...===I share my father and my grand father's political views.
We discuss them all the time. And my grandfather has never even heard of
Limbaugh or the other people you blame for any contrasting points of view. So
what ya gonna blame that on??Obviously there's another place
you can get this disease (other than fox news or racism). What could it be??===It would just be refreshing if people on the left could
explain and defend their views, instead of just attacking anyone who differs as
"racist" or "AM radio nut", etc...I try to explain
my views daily and respect other's views... and avoid shallow adhominem
I am amazed at how many people here hate the President. They will twist like
pretzels to justify themselves. Or worse, take their talking points from Fox
and other extreme partisans. And then they don't want to apply the same
principles to their own.
To "liberal larry" you don't unify a nation by telling the poor
that they are poor because the rich are stealing all of the wealth. You
don't unify the nation by allowing the press to keep pushing the idea that
those that don't agree with you are all racists. You don't unify the
nation by telling everybody that the problems the nation faces are all the fault
of the previous administration (some people liked the previous
administration). The fact is that very little if anything Obama has
said actually unifies people. To "Blue" while unemployment is
down, so is labor participation. There are fewer people in the labor force. If
the labor force was the same today as it was in 2008, the unemployment rate
would be around 15%.
Irony GuyI hate having to take the "some of my best friends are
black people" approach, but truth is, many who dislike Obama, (some even
hate), don't like being accused of disliking him because he is a black man.
That is the theme running rampant through many on the left side of the media.
Truth is, I actually dislike Harry Reid more than Obama, because I think he has
been more destructive to our country. Harry by the way not only shares my race,
but my religion. Most of us who don't like Obama do so because of his
politics, not his race. I would love to see one of the minority Republicans,
like Haley, Rubio, West, or Cain become President. Race is just a card played
by people who have nothing else as an excuse.
@Mike Richards - you have brought this up over and over again... "1. He is
commander in chief. Benghazi?" ..... what about it. You are the self
proclaimed legal expert here, you want to make accusations of impeachable
treason.... lets hear your evidence. What specific units were in
theatre? What was their capability at that time? What was the given
protocols for these unites, and who inside the white house signed off on these
protocols? What specific intelligence did the white house have of events on
the ground did they have? What specific request for aid during these events
were denied, by either field commanders or more specifically what request did
the White House deny?I am sure you have the answer to all these, if
you are going to continually make the claims you make. So please, so us we had
units available, that had the right capability, and where prescribed protocols
were not carried out in order to affect the results of an election. I want
specifics.I get things were done wrong...... but I need you to show
me where these were politically motivated and grounds fro impeachment. Back it
up with actually facts.
Irony Guy,I don't think people really "hate" President Obama
(but some do). But I assure you some people really, really, deeply, hated
President Bush too. I won't name names, but I assure you... it was there.
You were just on the other side, so it wasnt as noticable. I know
you are a fan, so you probably won't acknowledge this, but you should
expect some of this. After all, Obama's approval rating is lower than any
President in modern history (excepting Nixon) (source Factank). Many
people are disappointed with Obama. Even some who voted for him and supported
him originally. So expect some negative comments.I know some
people will never see any fault in Barack Obama, and I understand that. But
people have a right to a different point of view, and to express that point of
view. And I know I'll get the, "you have the right to your
opinion, but not your own facts". But that's not true. Opinions
aren't facts. We are ALL biased to one extent or another. Some are more
biased than others. But none of us have absolutely no bias (Obama Fans
@Anti-dude..... the US dollar has been in the same trading range now for a long
time.... hasn't change much at all..... what the heck are talking about?
It has been actually in the same trading range since 2009 (.73-.78 cents to the
euro)... If you really want to look where the dollar took its
tumble was when Bush took office the dollar was about 1.05 per euro.... and fell
all the way to .63 dollars to the euro in 2008. It has climbed into a trading
range in the 70s since. This "printing money" rhetoric would
only mean something if other governments didn't print. But simply based on
population expansion, you need to print money or else you would have devastating
Can Obama unify this country on anything? I will use this quote to empahsize
the point,"Unify? No! Obama doesn't solve problems. He
condemns groups of people instead."Within certain communities of
people, there is no point in even discussing anything. A recent national poll
from a university, the question was asked in 2014, will you be voting for the
Democrat candidate, or the Republican candidate, where no names was provided.
80 percent of Republicans responded that they would vote republican, without
even knowing who is running. The individual running and running against
didn't matter. Only 16 percent said they couldn't answer. How pathetic is that. The individual doesn't matter. Its about party
loyalty. So can Obama change anything. With an 80 percent confidence
level..... the answer has to be Np.Its all about party.... and not
What disturbs me is the visceral hatred for Obama in these comments. I disagreed
with GW Bush but I didn't hate him; I thought he was a decent guy. Why all
Re: "Obama does best when he rallies the nation to unify"How
would we know? He's never tried it.His calls to "unity"
are actually nothing more than calls for abject and total surrender of important
principles, to no greater purpose than making pathetic, lame-duck attempts to
repair his political legacy -- replacing Jimmy Carter as the worst president in
Many of us "liberals" read both of the Salt Lake City newspapers. It is
beneficial to get both sides of every story, and read varied opinions in the
forums.Frequently, this newspaper publishes numerous articles and comments
that appear very unkind, unfair, and untrue concerning President Obama(in our
opinions).Later, we move on to the "other local newspaper" that
many conservatives find so distasteful.Wow, the sun comes up, common sense
abounds, and we feel so much better!
Joe BlowHow can it not fall on deaf ears when everything said,
especially by David, is true? Fool us once shame on you. Fools us 10 times,
shame on the whole country.
* you will not see your taxes go up a single dime* I will not sign any
legislation which adds a single dime to the debt.* you can keep your plan,
and doctor* the stimulus package will provide shovel ready jobs* we
will give Egypt tanks, helicopters, and fighter jets, but we must take guns away
from from the American people. So, last night, Obama says over eight
millions jobs have been created, and the deficit has been cut in half.Hmm?
Asking Obama to want to unify instead of divide is like asking Peyton Manning to
throw as many interceptions as possible in the Super Bowl. In other words he
won't do it. It goes against everything his radical background taught him
about power. And he is learning a tough lesson in how the American government
works. For a guy who "supposedly" taught constitutional law, he is
truly ignorant of how our government/seperation of powers is supposed to
Judging by the comparative record of performance, it would rather seem that Mr.
Obama does best when he is playing a round of golf in Hawaii - or South Africa.
We particularly love Mr. Obama best when he is far away from us. Though his
vacations are always an expensive indulgence of taxpayer dollars, it is worth
every penny, just for the emotional comfort of knowing that he is most
constructive by his absence. I am perfectly willing to give Mr. Obama every
chance to air yet another great "rallying" speech, so long as I
don't have to listen, or endure any more of the consequences of his
disastrous good intentions.
It takes two to tango, and from January 20, 2009, the Republicans have sworn not
to tango. Don't blame the President for this. It lies directly at the
feet of the GOP. This editorial, by taking a stance on specific issues, puts
this paper clearly in the Republican camp. It is a shame that the press voice
for its ownership isn't more independent instead of partisan.
Obama had a chance early on to be a unifying figure, but he wasn't
interested. At this point, after all the divisive rhetoric, deception and
outright lying, there is no reason to trust him at all, no matter what he says.
"It has been prophesied that Salt Lake City will be destroyed as corrupted
centers of God have in all of history - and our own scriptures tell us it will
happen."Really? SLC destroyed? You don't say. Just as
centers of God have been destroyed "in all history."? Do mean like
centers of God like London (Church of England) Rome and Mecca?Gee I
must have missed the news of those great city's destruction.Come to think of it I must have missed that chapter and verse in the
scriptures where it talks about SLC's destruction either.Sounds
like someone has shall I say, a fruitful imagination.
Based on these comments, I would say the "unity" message fell on deaf
ears. You don't call for unity by telling them you're going
to pass whatever you want by executive fiat, whether they like it or not,
regardless of role given the Executive Branch vs the Legislative Branch in the
Constitution. You don't bring Congress into unity with you by
threatening to walk over them and make them irrelevant. You bring
them into unity by finding common ground and working on that first.. and once
you have found a way for BOTH sides to get some wins... then you go for some of
your more controversial priorities. You don't just cram the
stuff with the most opposition down your opposition's throats, with no
attempt at compromise, snd tell them their going to like it, or you're
going to do it again and again.===I was most
disappointed at the half of the room that stood and applauded as he told them he
was going to make Congress irrelevant. It was like watching history
reenacted. Like watching the Roman Senate applauding Caesar as he told them he
was going to make the Senate irrelevant.
The hatred runs deep with the radio fans. There were 52 attacks on US
embassies during the Bush administration. Where were all you "patriots"
then? "Stalin to Hitler, to Castro to Mao ste Tung" -and
you expect to be taken seriously?"It has been prophesied that
Salt Lake City will be destroyed as corrupted centers of God have in all of
history - and our own scriptures tell us it will happen." -I've also
heard he's paving the way for the antichrist on Bill O'Reily's
show last week"Is it in a spirit of unity when all he does is
race bait and call anybody who doesnt like him a racist?"Because there
are no racist? Even when it's clear there are?You guys must of
watched a different presentation or maybe your just getting the cliff notes from
your radio, but I saw none of that last night.
Unify? When has he ever done that? Since beer gate about six months into office,
all he's ever done is divide. The AP has an article on the 7 points of his
campaign speech from last night where Obama continues to mislead the nation.
Nice spin by Blue, every single friend I know that supported Obama when he came
in office has woken up. They are now silent.
It is simple to judge whether what President Obama is doing is proper or
improper. He has a job description given him by the people. It assigns him
some very simple duties AFTER requiring him to swear an oath to faithfully
execute the office of President and to preserve, protect and defend the
Constitution of the United States.1. He is commander in chief.
Benghazi?2. He can make treaties with foreign nations with the consent of
Congress. 3. He can fill vacancies during a "recess". His abuse
of that is before the Court.5. He shall report the state of the union -
not some grandiose plan, but the actual state of the Union.6. He shall see
that all of the laws are faithfully executed - including those that he does not
want to execute.7. He shall commission all officers.8. He
shall be removed for failure to perform his duties.
BlueDeficits are falling fast due to inflation and fiat currency
that devalues the dollar. Printing more paper money is whats killing the dollar.
I cant understand why people call me a republican. They are just as bad as the
Democrats. Bought and paid for by offshore special interest groups who are the
real power structure of the country. The whole goal of these people is to
President Obama has tried to be a unifying president but he has faced
unprecedented opposition by a far right drifting Republican party. His attempts at bipartisanship have been seen, by an obstructionist GOP, as
signs of weakness so he has had no alternative but to govern by executive order
so he can get SOMETHING done.Maybe as the right comes to its
collective senses and start heading back to the center we can start working
together to solve our nations challenges.
Based on these comments, I would say the "unity" message fell on deaf
I thought part of Obama's speech was an admission of his failures;
unemployment too high, economic inequality, etc.! But the solutions he offered
were frightening; I will force my will through executive privilege, "because
I have a pen and a phone". Isn't that exactly what every dictator in
history has done, from Stalin to Hitler, to Castro to Mao ste Tung? Imagine the
howls of protest from the left if a conservative president threatened to
invalidate congress like that?
class warfarerace warfaregender warfarehow does that qualify
But when has Obama tried to unify the country? When he charges
racism against a police officer that arrests a law-breaking college kid? When he tries to divide the nation on the 2nd Amendment? When
he divides the nation over gay marriage? When he divides the nation
with a healthcare law that was wholly Democrats creation? When he
divides the country by trying to force religious organizations to pay for birth
control and abortions? When he divides the nation by threatening to
go around Congress? When he divides the nation by eliciting class
warfare through tax debate? When he gives cash to his friends in
green energy? When he shuts down the opportunity for a Canadian oil
pipeline and shovel-ready jobs? When he tries to enact cap and trade
energy policies to combat "global warming"? Oh wait, now its
"climate change".When he lies about Benghazi? When he lies about government spying on its citizens? When he lies
about healthcare, "You can keep you plan if you like it, you can keep your
doctor…"?When has he worked to unite our country?
Unify? No!Obama doesn't solve problems. He condemns
groups of people instead.
"This guy is a total obscenity."If anything qualifies as an
obscenity it's the knee-jerk negativity of today's conservatives as
exemplified by the first four comments to this article.Unemployment
is lower than when Obama took office. Deficits are falling fast. The chief
cause of the deficits incurred since 2003 are two unpaid for foreign wars and
tax cuts that had little or nothing to do with Obama.Corporate
profits and share prices are at record highs. American corporations have
_never_ been sitting on so much cash.A small but powerful group of
the wealthiest Americans are owning a rapidly growing portion of our
nation's wealth. Meanwhile, the buying power of today's minimum wage
is less than the buying power of the minimum wage of the 1970's, and in
real dollars over the last 20 years middle income wages have stagnated at best,
and declined for many Americans. That fact alone should tell you that
"trickle-down" economics were a fallacy.Howl with rage all
you want about how much you detest Obama, but here's the fact - he's
your president, and the way the GOP is conducting itself Hillary is a shoe-in
I love how they deflate the unemployment numbers and dont even count those who
arent looking for work and forced onto welfare as being unemployed. The real
unemployment is 36%. We have been in a depression since bush and they use these
3 month temp jobs as examples of job creation.
Is it in a spirit of unity when all he does is race bait and call anybody who
doesnt like him a racist? This guy is a total obscenity.
Whoever wrote this article must have had their head in the sand for the last
five years..Benghazi, Fast and Furious, Black Panthers, IRS, 6+
trillion in debt DURING his admin, Obamacare (ACA)destroying what is left of
American medicine - no thanks to the churches who are allowing this to go on
without saying a darn word..It has been prophesied that Salt Lake
City will be destroyed as corrupted centers of God have in all of history - and
our own scriptures tell us it will happen..With this kind of
"hey, I am going to go bury my head in the sand over here" attitude,
it's apparent that we're much closer to the stroke of midnight
time-wise than many will ever admit in Salt Lake City or anywhere in the US
while we all burn and the Constitution lays bare at the hands of evil and base
cowards..Too bad even Deseret News can't stand as the Stripling
Warriors of old DID.
Experience should have taught us by now that you cannot believe a single thing
that Barack Obama says. He will say anything to tel people what they want to
hear.Instead look at what he actually does, and that is usually the
exact opposite of his pious words and soothing rhetoric. He only
wants to fundamentally transform our country by destroying its economic
foundations, cultural foundations, our military strength and the very concept of
the rule of law. That is proven by the actions of the President himself and his
band of untrustworthy Chicago cronies. If he speaks of unity, he will
be busy driving wedges and thwarting cooperation by every means possible. It is
ALWAYS his way, or nothing at all.
He would do a whole lot better if he just resigned.
Remember when barack told us he'd keep unemployment below 8% if given his
first(of many) spendathon of 787 Billion?or that he'd be a one
term president if he didn't cut the deficit in half(not only didn't he
cut it in half, he didn't cut it at all, he increased it)Barack
has added more to the national debt than almost all other presidents in the
history of our country combined.Barack is only president to cause
the USA to lose our perfect AAA credit rating in the history of our country
