Down under,

You're not considering that Utah will learn and improve from this game as well. One thing Coach K has instilled in his program is learning from each game and working hard to improve in areas where they didn't preform well. Arizona's good, but the Utes will have a huge home crowd for the game up here and hopefully a few more wins to boost their confidence.

Nicely put, a gem of truth.

According to Down Under's logic, Portland should really whip up on BYU in Provo. After all, they know how to play the cougs now.

Mormon ute,
Huge home crowd? Since when have they had that unless you are considering a huge crowd that fills half the arena or less.

That what the utes thought too but have not beaten the Cougars in Provo since 2004 or so, not to mention BYU has won 11 of 13 recently.
BYU will not overlook Portland in Provo.

and Utah beat BYU, most recently.

No playoff for U

Remember when Utah's RPI and SOS were supposed to sky rocket and BYU's RPI and SOS were supposed to plummet as soon as each team entered conference play?

Halfway through the WCC and PAC 12 conference schedules:

#48 BYU (#10 SOS)
#109 Utah (#200 SOS)

BYU still has more road wins in the PAC 12 this season than Utah, in fact, BYU has as many PAC 12 road wins this season as the Utes have had in the last three seasons COMBINED!

The Utes haven't beaten BYU in Provo since January 31st, 2005 (almost a decade).

Dave Rose era
BYU 222-75 (75%), 12-4 versus Utah, 6 NCAAs, 2 NITs, 8 20+ win seasons, 8 winning seasons
Utah 130-143 (48%), 4-12 versus BYU, 1 NCAA, 0 NITs, 1 20+ win season, 6 losing seasons

Forgot to mention that the Utes are a pathetic 1-20 on the road, that may have something to do with it.

The crowds at the Huntsman Center have been big and raucous for conference games this year. It will be crazy, as it should be, when #1 comes to town.

Go Utes!

No playoff for u speaks volumes about where the two programs are. Spokane, Yes the utes get the rare win against the Cougars every decade or so but the numbers do not lie and tell the bigger picture.
I gotta say the numbers certainly show that BYU is the better program over the past few years.

But seriously folks!

SOS has a lot to do with where a coach think his team is mentally. Rose scheduled the #10 toughest schedule in the country so far knowing they would lose many of them to top ranked teams. Crisco put together the absolute easiest schedule in the country and it is still showing in their SOS. If you take away the 9 cupcake wins their SOS would jump big time but their W-L record would also show a losing season.
Just so everyone knows, Sports Illustrated has BYU as stealing a slot on selection Sunday. No mention of the utes. It was a nice article, for a B YU fan. Not so much if you are a utah fan.

But seriously folks!

Just a little tidbit from Sports Illustrated today. If we are looking at how the conferences are thought of here are the power conferences and how many locks they have for the NCAA tourney:
#1 Big 10 have 5 locks
#2 Big 12 have 4 locks
#3 Amer. Ath. have 3 locks
#4 ACC have 3 locks
#5 SEC have 2 locks
#6 Big East have 2 locks
#8 MWC, WCC, Missiouri Valley, and the PAC all have one lock.

I thought that might help to clear up how the conferences are looked at by the national experts.

But Seriously Folks, it might also help to include more than one source.

Consider for instance Joe Lunardi of "Bracketology" fame has the PAC-12 with 6 teams in (but not Utah), while the WCC has 2 (but has BYU).

Also of note is that on ESPN's Basketball Power Index (BPI), the Utes sit at #44 and BYU at #59. In the RPI, which has already been listed, the Utes are 1-1 against RPI 1-25, while BYU sits at 0-3 vs the 1-25. Utah was assuredly punished for having a weak non-conschedule.

For me, I think both BYU and Utah will finish with double-digit losses and both will be in the NIT.

PAC-12 University of Utah article with the majority of the comments coming from a WCC team that Utah absolutely dominated. Obsess much?
