People that want to write about this case should really do their homework first.
Martin was a very troubled violent young man. That is why his mother kicked him
out of her house and sent him to live with his "father", an
ex-gangbanger. This is not 'hard-to-find' information. We need the
press to stop the race-baiting and start reporting facts so people can get real
pictures of what is really going on.
I see part of the problem with members of the black community not respecting
themselves. They use the "n" word in addressing each other, call their
girlfriends "ho's", wear their pants baggy, grab themselves. This
type action just perpetuates a negative attitude. All people should be
respectful of each other and other races. As part Cherokee, I feel part of the
Native Americans, but you won't find any Native American who speaks
disrespectful of their race. Respect yourself first, then others will show the
same respect towards you, and that includes wearing "hoodies" when the
weather doesn't call for it.
Maybe both Martin and Zimmerman had their racist views, who knows. Probably
likely, given that they're both human beings. But to me it has always
sounded like two people who made decisions out of really poor judgment. As FT
has already noted, absent the presence of a gun, no one would have died, and no
one commenting here would even know these two human beings existed.
What neighborhood would you walk in.
So what happens when Martin's mother comes to speak in SLC? I sure hope she
doesn't meet up with some of these posters, because it would give the city
a bad name.
@Neanderthal"We learn in grade school that 10 in 1,000 is less
percentage-wise than 10 in 100."Sure but... okay let's try
throwing in some sample numbers to illustrate my point. If we're looking
at 2% of black people turning up with weapons in these searches (margin of error
+- .75%) and 4% of white people turning up with weapons (margin of error +-
1.5%, MoE larger due to smaller sample size) why are we automatically assuming
that frisking more white people is automatically going to lower their
percentage? "Good luck with that. They frisk whoever's on
the streets."You could change which streets are subject to it.
Or you just get rid of this practice which was the thing that clinched de
Blasio's primary win anyway.
My skin is white but if I trace my ancestry back far enough I will eventually
find my family in Africa. Am I an African-American? Is someone whose recent
ancestry is from Egypt, Morocco or Libya an African-American or do you classify
them as Middle Eastern? There is no such thing as race in a biological sense as
there is far more that unites us than there is that divides us. Indeed there is
more differences biologically between people with light skin then there is
between people with light skin and people with dark skin. The comment made that
there are three races in the world, namely Caucasian, Negroid and Asian is
medieval. It is false and has no scientific basis whatsoever. Ethnic and
cultural differences are real but racial differences are fantasy.
Fred,Your comment has proven you know very little about the
evidence. Treyvon was on the phone with his girlfriend for several
minutes before he attacked Zimmerman. Treyvon's girlfriend testified in
court that Treyvon used a racial slur and foul language in reference to
Zimmerman. I would write here the racist and vulgar phrase Treyvon
used, but it wouldn't be allowed by the Des news. And rightfully so,
disgusting racist phrases like that are despicable. Go read up on
the evidence pal.
Fred44 - Read the transcripts, and you will know that Trayvon was on the phone
with his girlfriend describing Zimmerman before the confrontation. It isn't through a medium, it was on a simple cell phone.
Zimmerman was not only a troubled man after the incidence, he was before as
well. While this is was a tragedy I think the real issue was not about profiling
but about guns. Without a hand gun this story turns out much differently.
There will always be wantabee cops and vigilantes like Zimmerman but the
difference now is that they walk around with loaded guns.
cjb,Were you at the crime scene? I didn't see you testify, you
could have really helped Mr. Zimmerman's case. For many of us
who weren't there and don't know exactly what went on, the facts were
a little less clear.Chris B. did Travon speak to his girlfriend from
the other side? If not I am not sure how he used racial slurs in reference to
I was ravaged by a large dog, a breed known for being vicious. Consequently, I
freak out when a dog runs up on me, but it is far worse if the dog looks like
the one that attacked me. In those moments when I am trying to
process a dog approaching me, there are 3 characteristics I assess, in this
order:1. Size - large is scary, always. Little, not so much.2.
Color - my calm brain knows this makes no difference, but when I am stressed by
an approaching large dog, color somehow matters. If it is the color of the dog
that attacked me I am far more scared.3. Breed - this is lower on the list
because it is harder to assess than size and color, in that flash of panic. Does it make sense? Considering my experience, yes. Yet in reality the
fur color does not matter. (I like dogs that run from me.)There are reasons certain people are more suspect than others. Some reasons
are dress and behavior. For some people, it might be race, but there may be a
bad experience that is the cause. Calling them racist is harsh, IMO.
Schnee"It's possession, not use..."Police rarely
if ever search private residents for evidence of marijuana use. Besides it
appears that marijuana will soon be legal in this country."...do
you think the higher rates of stopping and frisking them as opposed to white
people is what turns up the possessed marijuana?"If one group
(blacks) is frisked more than another group their 'percentage' of
finds might well be less. We learn in grade school that 10 in 1,000 is less
percentage-wise than 10 in 100."... I guess they need to frisk
more white people or less minorities in order to balance it out."Good luck with that. They frisk whoever's on the streets."I noted a study (which I should reference..."The names
denote the race. And, yes, it's racist in a way. Unfortunately, black
American history of employment reliability is divergent. This is unfortunate
and should be changed. Who can change it? Black Americans. You can't
have a bad reputation and expect good things to automatically happen."...are you blaming black people for racial profiling?"From the facts in the Trayvon Martin case it looks as if they do.
Zimmerman had the right to follow(and NO, police did not command him not to)He had the right to carryHe had the right to defend
I only know a few African Americans personally and they are all nice people. The
majority that I see are on TV and music videos. From what I view they want me to
believe they are a bunch of thugs and that I should be scared because they might
shoot me. Sorry for being scared its just what I see.
When my kids were young, I tried to teach them that their appearance was a
message they were sending to the world about themselves. My youngest
son recently experienced this first hand. Just for fun, he used some of his
wife's left over dye to color his hair blue (or green, I forget). Hoping to
improve his position at work, he went to an interview like that. He was not
selected. His interviewer, being an old softball and basketball buddy of mine,
asked me what that was all about with his hair. I explained that my son is a
good kid, good husband, good father, but that he was just playing around.
(He's since cut his hair and looks much better.)The problem was
that he looked like a punk based on the message he was sending. Bosses want
people who look professional, not like punks. Was he profiled? Yes. Was it
accurate? No. Was it justified? I think so. Does my son have a valid complaint?
Not in my mind. He failed in his interview because of what he communicated to
the interviewer. Not every message is verbal.
cjb,Well said!It was also proven Treyvon had drugs in
his system when he viciously attacked Zimmerman and also his own girlfriend
admitted Treyvon used racial slurs in reference to Zimmerman. The only
evidence of racism in this case was from Treyvon
Racial profiling .. if .. it happened is the least if the sins in this case.
Travon's father told police the voice of the man screaming was not his son.
Later when he realized changing his testimony might help convict George
Zimmerman he changed his testimony. Texts from Travons phone showed he liked to
pick fights and beat up people. Travon could have walked away when he noticed
George Zimmerman keeping an eye on him. Instead he chose to sneek up on and then
viciously attack Mr. Zimmerman, knocking his head repeatedly into a sidewalk and
punching him in the face.If one wants to build a case against racial
profiling, this is a terrible case to make that case.
@Neanderthal"That's because blacks use on the streets and whites

you think the higher rates of stopping and frisking them as opposed to white

Latinos are frisked more than whites of course the rate of finding something

situations, it would behoove the black community to rectify this situation...
How? Stop having babies our of wedlock, stay out of gangs, get an education.

how can we express ourselves when we have to stick to strick guideline as if in
a communist govt.
@riverofsun:"Since the trial ended, we have seen evidence that
Zimmerman is a troubled individual."Who wouldn't be
troubled... being dragged through court, demeaned in the most vile ways,
including being accused of racial profiling.@Vet2Biz:"Those who think profiling helps identify criminals are forgetting that in
order to profile - you have to decide what a criminal looks like."You seem to think that racial profiling is racial criminalizing. Racial
profiling is simply identifying someones race... of which there are four in the
world... Caucasian (While), black (African) Hispanic, and Asian. Actually there
are only three: Caucasian, African, and Asian. "No ONE group is
more dangerous than any other."Not true. Statistics show that
Black youth are involved in a disproportionate number of crimes."Profiling is lazy and inaccurate."Profiling is a major
tool in the arsenal of law enforcement to detain and punish law breakers, be
they White, Black, or Asian.
I can agree with hukutas, but Treyvon Martin, unfortunately, had his chance to
grow up taken away by force. And the taker? He's gone on to other other
things, probably convinced that he is, according to one DN poster, a "great
I think what some people must learn is respect is earned not given. Why respect
any teen out in the middle of the night with their pants sagging, walking
through other peoples property like a thug? Whats to respect?Bottom
line certain people go around looking for trouble (Or acting like they are to be
"Bad" or "Hard" but when they find it, they want to complain the
entire system is at fault. Not to be heartless but it is time to grow
up, stop having babies, hanging out on street corners, causing trouble and
seeking the easy way out while drinking and smoking your drugs, bottom line,
TIME TO GROW UP.

In the first place, Zimmerman did not racially profile. He was asked by the
dispatcher what color the suspect was. Zimmerman responded... "he looks
black."Secondly, racial designations seems to be the choice of
the Black community. They refer to themselves as "African-Americans."
That term is profiling either by race or location origins. They should just
drop the "African" and call themselves "Americans." Because
they are Americans.
Those who think profiling helps identify criminals are forgetting that in order
to profile - you have to decide what a criminal looks like. And when you do that
- you may be right some of the time, but most likely all you're going to do
it paint a target on the back of someone innocent. Clothing and skin color tells
you NOTHING about a person's intent at any given moment. According to
historical record, we should consider white people in nice clothes more prone to
violence after dozens of centuries of war, genocide, slavery, organized crime
and even crusades that has taken the lives of millions (maybe billions)! What
I'm saying is that for every style of dress or skin color there are
criminals and just regular people, but less criminals by huge margins.
Statistics tell you NOTHING about what an individual is likely to do. No ONE
group is more dangerous than any other. Profiling is lazy and inaccurate -but
"even a broken clock is right twice a day."
Since the trial ended, we have seen evidence that Zimmerman is a troubled
individual. Now, even more than before, there are screaming doubts about
what really happened that night, and about the verdict.
Instead of speaking out on a topic bearing no meaning in this instance. Why not
speak on being better parents and raising better kids.
Racial profiling is a name created by the media. The program is actually nothing
more than statistical analysis. You take the crime data for an area and by a
computer formula, a list is compiled of types of persons "likely" to
commit crimes. Age, race are information used for this analysis. The program in
its intended form is not a method to promote racism; it is merely a tool to help
law enforcement keep an eye out for possible criminal elements. This is a tool
to help prevent crime before it happens. Racist people are going to be racist;
they do not need a computer program to help them be that way.
I am so glad that Travvon's mother is going on and speaking in public. I
am so glad that she is being invited from different organizations.. We need
more parents to speak about unwanted races.. That is being taught in the home
when these children are 2-3. They are following their parents. May God Bless
her family and keep giving her strength to carry on..Robbin Gunter..
The real problem with profiling, is it works. We can talk about doing something
different but we haven't found anything as effective.
"Racial profiling" is an over used phrase to excuse yourself.
