Excellent letter and an issue that should be addressed by those re-seeking political office.

President Obama decided what was cut, not the congress. Utah was 'punished' for having the lowest percent vote for Obama, by Obama. It was all about punitive politics.

The congressmen were doing what is best for the country, of which Utah is a part. If the country goes bankrupt, Utah goes down with it.

Wait a minute, Robert. All government employees got paid for the time they were off. And, because of that, they likely didn't even miss a payday.

If you'll analyze the government funding process you'll find that it was the Democrats who shut the place down. According to the US Constitution (Article 1.7) all funding bills are to originate in the House, which is controlled by Republicans. That august body passed a bill to fund the government, except Obamacare. The Senate wouldn't even take the bill up and the president said he would refuse to sign. So, who closed 'er down? Democrats. Who got the blame? Republicans. Who's responsible for blaming Republicans? Essentially, the Democrats in cahoots with their friends the news media.

Badgerbadger,

It was not punitive politics. It was not giving away every good card in your hand to the opposition. If the President had opened everything the Republicans wanted opened, he would have had nothing to bring them to the table.

The Rs blew it. They listened to the young guns and not the older, wiser folks and they took a shellacking for their trouble. Maybe next time they will listen.

Senator Lee's folly.

"If the President had opened everything the Republicans wanted opened, he would have had nothing to bring them to the table."

They WERE at the table... passing funding bills. It was Barack Hussein Obama and Harry Reid who refused to negotiate.

"The Rs blew it."

And the Democrats shut the doors. Actually they shut the parks. Notice that the White House was still open for business.

"Maybe next time they will listen."

They won't have to listen. They will control not only the House but the Senate and White House as well. In the end the Democrats are who 'blew it.'

It still amazes me that the "blame" is placed on Obama or the Democrats. It was Lee and Cruz who did this with their tea party politics and associates. We were held hostage by them and them alone. . They were caught and the nation went ballistic against them. Normal sane people did not follow their garbage. Notice that their power base has dwindled....

Alfred,

They were NOT at the table. They were offering poison pills and crying crocodile tears that the President would not "negotiate" with them.

Did they really expect he would give up his most important accomplishment? It doesn't matter whether you like or hate Obamacare - expecting him to sacrifice it in order for them to vote to open up the govt. would have been ludicrous - so they got caught.

No sympathy.

Republican John Boehner refused to allow debate and vote on 1 funding bill.

Democrat Harry Reid refused to allow debate and vote on over 20 funding bills.

Democrat President Barak Hussein Obama, who should have been leading compromise discussions, was intentionally missing in action.

I can't figure out how anyone can conclude that the bulk of the fault goes to the republicans?

Maybe Zombies really do exist, possessing the bodies of the living and putting them in a stupor.

One vote. Senator Lee has only one vote. He did not, could not shut down the government, any more than your one vote could shut down the government.

Re Alfred:

Al step away from the cool aid! Nothing has changed with the voter base since the 08 and 12 elections! The pubs have yet to do anything but try to kill the ACA, and nothing to change their image. If you think that the problems with ACA is enough to overcome the problems the Pubs have with lack of support of minorities, women, labor and the young vote, along with the ill gotten actions of Cruz and Lee being flag bearers of the shut down, you are sadly mistaken! The greatest fear the Right has is that by the time the election rolls around the ACA will be providing health care for millions and in case you hadn't noticed it is starting to happen inspite of the horrendous rollout. House, Senate and White House, dream on!

Who refused to take up the House funding bill? Harry Reid and Barack Obama. As you may know, they're both Democrats.

"It was Lee and Cruz who did this with their tea party politics and associates. We were held hostage by them and them alone."

Pray tell how did two guys, Lee and Cruz, do that?

"Notice that their power base has dwindled."

They never had a base. You're making things up.

"Twin Lights:
"They were NOT at the table."

They WERE at the table. They did their job by passing a funding bill. Are they supposed to get approval from Obama and Reid before they do their job of funding the government? If you wanna find two people who threw a wrench in the process, it was Reid and Obama.

"Did they really expect he would give up his most important accomplishment?"

The House passed a bill funding Obambcare but delayed implementation for a year... which Obama refused but later did the exact same thing.

"Is there any reason to even consider voting for the politicians who knowingly and willfully damaged the state economy to say nothing of what they did to the citizens of northern Utah?"

==========

Agreed.
Great letter.

Alfred,

Passing bills that which you know will be rejected in order to score political points is not doing your job (if you are a member of Congress).
