Very disappointing that the coach and players interviewed did not mention how hard they've been working on their defense and free-throws.

As my old 'ball coach said over 50 years ago: "If they don't score, we don't have to." He also said, "Defense is 90% desire."

I guess we'll see how much desire these young men have....

Why Matt Carlino is the first one talking on this article? He needs to stop talking and play ball or better to sit a lot and let Alford be the starter. All players need to keep doing the playing and no talking.

It is too bad that BYU books up the Marriott center for a bunch of silly performance things. They should be playing more home games.

BYU fans need to admit that, as Carlino goes, so go the Cougars. I don't know what DEW Cougars is talking about but Carlino needs to play, play a lot, play the point, and play well. When he is rolling, the Cougars are a very good team, when he's not, they struggle. I know it's up to Carlino to be ready to play every game but at the same time these coaches need to stop messing with him and create situations where he can get comfortable and into the game, i.e., they need to leave him at the point guard and stop switching with Collinsworth. Carlino is not a 2 guard. These coaches need to understand the dynamics and make it happen.

@ Malihini - Even though Carlino frustrates me more than any player on the roster, I think I agree with your summary.

Carlino needs to play smarter not less. When his shot isn't falling, he needs to find other ways to lead the offense. He needs to drive to the basket more, he needs to set up other players, He needs to be keep his head in the game on defense.

When Haws shot isn't falling, he finds ways to get to the free throw line.

Although I think Collinsworth is the most well rounded player on the team, I really don't like him at point. He has no outside shot. Defenses can play off him and clog up the middle. A PG needs to be able to hit open outside shots.

I'd really like to see us play smaller more often with Carlino (1), Halford (2), Haws (3), Collinsworth (4) and Mika (5). Subbing Austin in for Mika may keep both of them out of as much foul trouble.

We must get back to our winning ways today to have any shot at post season.

Basketball is not rocket science. Defensively, they are slow on the parameter, weak inside, and are not making up for those individual issues with exceptional team defense. On the other end of the court, they attempt to rely on quick offense "see go fast go hard w/o enough hard", but as the head of the snwake, Carlino, does not get the primary role of a point guard unless that point guard has exceptional offensive talent (and that does not describe Carlino even though he thinks it does), what you have is a group of players with significant individual talent offensively, but a mediocre team...and team basketball will almost always beat a system relying on individual talent. I think the world of Coach Rose, but these problems can only be resolved with coaching that mandates intense team "D", and selfless ball movement every trip down the court when early offense with a high probability for success is not available.

This team is talented at driving , but not at kicking it out when covered. Collingsworth is the best at it, but fails when it comes to jump shots. Carlino should sit on the bench if he is not hitting shots as he never seems to get better when he doesn't. The others off the bench do better when the team is playing better to begin with. My thoughts work a lot more on foul shooting which has cost at least 4 losses this year. Tell Carlino when he is wide open and set and not to shoot when he's not Collingsworth should look for Haws when he drives and all gaurds practice more 3 pointers.
