Utah is clearly the best team in the state of Utah right now. Utah is very, very athletic. Looking forward to the 14th. Should be fun to watch.

As we have heard all football season, beating worse teams is better than losing to ranked teams!

Congratulations to the prestigious PAC 12 utes with the best record in the state!

And again, record is all that matters.

Beating so many jc teams doesn't count. Sorry you're still number three!

I think we'll find out in march that Utah is the third best team in the state and it won't even be close. Utah is a much better team this year but they still wouldn't beat Utah state if they actually had the guts to play them and BYU is just a lot better. Congrats on beating one of the worst teams in the MWC. Did anyone really think Utah wouldn't have the best record in the state to this point? When you play a schedule weaker than weber state's you better have the best record. And please don't make SOS comparisons for football CB...football doesn't have teams like Evergreen and Grand Canyon. Not an accurate comparison (and BYUs fb SOS was 32, not 336 or something like Utah's in bball...please).

Bouncing back from a tough loss is important. Now let's finish the non-conference strong, and build momentum for the real schedule.

    Go Utes!!

  • Cougsndawgs West Point , UT
    Dec. 7, 2013 10:50 p.m.

Fresno State= sagarin rating of 145 with a SOS of 162. Good enough for 10th in the MWC. But hey it's a step up from Mount Saint Rockies and Seminary Tech. Utah SOS sagarin rating is actually 352, I gave them too much credit.

Don't get me wrong I think Utah is better and like what coach Crisco is doing there, but don't make ridiculous claims about being the best in the state. I'm just trying to save some people the embarrassment when reality sets in later in the season.

I love to see the Utes play well. Coach K has done a super job and this win is a big step forward.

I predict that the Utes will give the Cougars all they can handle, and more!!!! What a great game it will be!

Glad to see Utah raise its level of performance against another solid competitor. Success as the season evolves ....

Wow, this is so laughable reading all of the posts from the true blues about SOS in basketball being so important, just after reading all football season long how it doesn't matter. They claim the W is all that matters for football and hold up wins against middle Tennessee state, New Mexico State, Idaho state, San Jose state, and delusional state as proof that winning is all that is needed to be considered a team of relevance.

    So laughable, yet so predictable.

You're right I think I just needed a hug...I was reading other articles and let my competitive spirit get the best of me. Thanks for understanding, and good luck to the utes except against my Cougs...well actually they will need all the luck they can muster against BYU. Congrats on another win, and congrats on having a much better team this year with impressive players like Wright. No one should make statements about best in the state, however, until they prove it throughout the season. That's all I was saying.

    Kimmy:
As I stated above that's because BYU had the 32nd ranked schedule in the country...14 places ahead of Utah's 2012 SOS where they only went 5-7, 3-6, not 8-4 like BYU. Utah is playing the 352nd ranked schedule in bball...now do you really think that is a comparable argument against BYU fans' appraisal of FB SOS and success? In the end it doesn't matter in bball, because Utah will have their chance to prove themselves as their season becomes more difficult. Good luck, and cheers mates.

ekute-Which is the better team? The perennial head to head winner or the one that has a better record?

Easy, the team with the higher ranking at the end of the season, because that will have taken into consideration both head to head results AND records versus level of competition. Nothing inconsistent about that standard.

Not many are delusional enough to believe that head to head is the only measure. To think so would be to fantasize that the Ute football team this year is actually better than Stanford, no?

Sorry to rain on yours and Chrissy's fantasy land parade.

    @christine hedgefog

Any true follower of sports will tell you that head-to-head competition IS the only thing that counts. You can spin it a thousand different ways with your stats and "what-ifs", but the bottom line is, you prove it on the field. Any athlete will tell you that as well.

I know that is difficult for BYU fans like yourself to take, given your recent history against the U.

  • Crow Sandy , UT
    Dec. 8, 2013 2:07 p.m.

Utah is clearly the better of the two teams. The Utes are more athletic you can see it in the stat lines Utah doesn't have to go into a zone to play a more athletic team. Byu may be the 2nd best team in the wcc. But it's the wcc not the Pac 12 where 5 of our teams made it to the NCAA tournament.

C'mon Ute fans strength of schedule only matters in basketball, not football. And by golly head-to-head only matters if the blue team wins.

Never mind that during league play Utah will be competing in the 4th toughest basketball conference while BYU will be competing in the #9 conf. Here in the bubble we only pay attention to pre-league play SOS.

    ---------------

    Two words: Delon Wright

Too early but he MIGHT be the best player in the State.

WCC is a two team league. PAC-12 has three teams ranked and Colorado just upset #6 Kansas. Can you please tell us the last time you beat a ranked team?

"Last year, the Utes wouldn’t have been able to separate from Fresno State, or hit the Bulldogs with a debilitating second half run, or win a game like this on pure athleticism." -- Tony Jones

I agree with Tony, Sorry Ducky but Utah has athletes not "thugs".

    ---------------

So you think BYU would go 8-4 playing a PAC-12 (Big 5) schedule? Which means that you would have won at least 5 conference games.

Utah and TCU, who have much better talent, have not been able to win more than 4 conference games in any season.

What makes you think BYU has better talent than both Utah and TCU, which will allow it to compete in a Big 5 league?

NFL? BYU is on par with Colorado with the number of players drafted since 2005.
Class Rankings? BYU is at the bottom of the PAC-12.
    Better coaching?
Maybe because BYU is 0-8 vs Utah/TCU?

Hey Chris B and all of your many login monikers. I agree that the utes are vastly improved over the last few years, but for you to be prattling around pounding your chest as if they are superior based on their W/L record alone is a bit naive.

You seem to be discarding the fact that (1) the utes have played very lightweight teams and (2) as in football most games have been played a home.

But if you want to savor the euphoria it has built up in your mind to this point then enjoy.

But, as with body building, U can build up an impressive physique by repetitiously lifting lots of light weights. But when a demonstration of actual strengthy is required then the humiliation will set in.

  • pocyUte Pocatello, ID
    Dec. 8, 2013 8:23 p.m.

    Surfs up,

I think most any Utah fan in their right mind could not seriously say Utah is the best team in the state. They may become that, but we all recognized that Utah's schedule this year has been lighter than a cream puff.

I think what you are responding to is a bit of a play on the tenor of the board since Utah moved to the Pac-12. Time and time again we Utah fans have had BYU posters claiming how much better BYU is than Utah when, at the end of the season they finish with more wins that Utah AND Utah has beaten them during the season.

Obviously SOS has an impact on W-L record. But to many BYU fans who come trolling on this board, that fact only applies to their basketball team this pre-season, not to the football team.

  • ekute Layton, UT
    Dec. 8, 2013 8:47 p.m.

I don't think that Chris is prattling around pounding his chest or savoring euphoria. He merely points out that according to you byu "fans" "record is all that matters". So, Surf is Up, which is it? The perennial head to head winner or the one with best record?

  • Cougsndawgs West Point , UT
    Dec. 8, 2013 9:20 p.m.

It's pretty simple...BYUs record will be better than Utah's and BYU will beat Utah on the court...you know the same scenario as last year, and the year before than and the year before that...you get the point. In basketball, which is what this article is about, BYU owns Utah on the court, in the rankings, and in win loss record. So all the arguments about whether record or ranking or head to head are most important is a moot point as far a a bball in this state...BYU owns U in all three categories. Period.

  • ekute Layton, UT
    Dec. 8, 2013 9:40 p.m.

    Cougsndawgs,

"BYU will beat Utah on the court". I wouldn't mark that down yet.

How does it feel to own your rival head to head but they claim superiority because of w/l record?

  • Surf is Up Miami, FL
    Dec. 8, 2013 9:57 p.m.

ekute, lets see if I can answer what I consider to be a strawman argument on your part with a question of my own:

Some time in March the NCAA committee responsible for inviting teams to the dance will be considering at-large bids for some teams that may not have won their respecive conferences, but did have a respectable season. Now, suppose there are two teams with the exact W/L records that they are considering. What criterion are they going to be using to decide which team deserves it more? The team that played some tough, close games to ranked opponents, or will they give the nod to the team that pounded Powderpuff high school and Nancy Mary academy et al, at home for the balance?

I'm sure if you think very hard you will come to the right conclusion.

It is so funny to me that byu fans feel the need to comment on stories about Utah basketball that don't even mention byu other than in passing concerning the upcoming game. That tells me that the way coach K got his team to play in provo last year despite not being able to finish the win has some of our blue-bleeding brethren down south a bit nervous.

Is there some other reason I haven't considered that's getting cougar fans to read and comment on these stories?

First to ekute...you didn't understand my post apparently. The difference is that BYU will have a better record and beat Utah on the court. I don't have to know how it feels to have Utah fans talk about better record meaning better team because Utah won't have a better record than BYU at the end if the season...and yes you can mark that down.

To the rest of Utah fans, I apologize for letting certain ute antagonists get to me. I actually have a lot of respect for coach Krisco and think Utah will have a good team this year. Good luck, it will be nice to see Utah basketball back to being competitive again. Cheers.
