“I was just overcome with emotion,” he said. “ ... I’m glad we got the pick. I’m glad we got the win.”

Seriously? Did you just win the Sugar Bowl? Or rather did you just beat our new "rival," Colorado to complete a 2-7 season in conference?

Shaking my head at the Ute trolls calling this a rivalry game. It may well be one some day, but other than a handful of internet trolls, no Ute fan I know really cares about this game (other than the fact that it is one of the few winnable games on our schedule each year). Colorado is terrible. If you guys consider them our rival and equal, then you have a low bar for Utah athletics. Although to be fair, given the state of Utah's program, Colorado does rival us is in our ineptitude in conference play.

Glad we got the win, but the closeness of the game speaks volumes - we, along with Colorado, are the joke of the PAC 12.

We need a new coach and new leadership. When our star linebacker is celebrating a win over Colorado like he just won a BCS game, something is seriously wrong with our program.

You miss the point No Playoff. Utah is in a conference where they have a chance to play for the conference championship and a BCS bowl. I frankly don't care about your opinion whether they will win or not. Objectively, they have a chance and I happen to disagree with your opinion.

Conversely, BYU has little chance at a BCS bowl even with an undefeated season given a SOS that never cracked the top 15 (and ended at low to mid 30's). The Utes could go bowling with that schedule. Notre Dame is the only viable BCS independent in terms of SOS with a legit chance at a BCS bowl.

Utah beat Stanford, the #5 team at the time and a team that ended #7. BYU's best victory is over #25 Texas (yet to play Baylor). You have nothing to brag about Cougar fans, so you come tear down the Utes, the team who owns you 4 straight, and 9 of the last 12.

"Swoop, a conference championship was closer to reality in Utah's first season in the PAC 12 than any championship has or will be for BYU for some time."

    LOL!

Even IF the Utes had managed to beat lowly 10-loss Colorado, the Utes had absolutely no chance of beating Oregon in the PAC 12 championship game with the pathetic offense the Utes had in 2011.

With USC ineligible, and the rest of the PAC South in shambles, you blew your only decent chance to even play in the championship game. It could be years, even decades, before the Utes ever come close to winning the PAC South, let alone the conference.

Amazing how a victory over Colorado boosts an overall season, truly amazing.

  • BigCougar Bountiful, UT

The AP article on this game headlined it noting that Utah slid by Colorado. I guess it is a rivalry. Colorado whacked Utah in the first one, gift-wrapped the game to Utah in the 2nd one (when they kept kicking off to Reggie Dunn) and then just ran out of time in the game this year (with Utah hanging on for dear life). That's quite a rivalry Chris B!

"Wow! Look at the that throw game! Quarterback controversy next spring?"

Yes, especially when those 2 QB's are in the upper echelon of Pac12 QB's.

wow...Chris B is so obsessed with all things BYU that there was very little in his post referencing the Ute victory over Colorado or ending their 2nd straight losing season on a high note and it was almost entirely composed of him taking shots at BYU.

  • DraperUteFan Draper, UT

Swoop, a conference championship was closer to reality in Utah's first season in the PAC 12 than any championship has or will be for BYU for some time.

A national championship is a "near impossibility" for most every school in the land, but for the Cougs it is an impossibility without conference affiliation and a strength of schedule that is not only not difficult enough, but the Cougs don't win many of the big ones on that schedule.

As for the Ute fans, players, and coaches, most of us would gladly exchange the BYU game permanently for more conference wins or a few more cupcake automatic W's the likes of Nevada, Idaho State, New Mexico State, the mighty Vandals of Idaho, etc.

I do have a difficult time keeping track of bowls that have a seemingly different sponsor every year. My bad.

Swoop "beating BYU has become the #1 goal of the kids on the hill." Goal Accomplished...Next.

Why do you keep beating yourself up? Utah beat BYU and hardly anyone cares. Why does that bother you? Forget about it. BYU does not help in conference position. We don't care about preseason anymore. We are done playing with you. Why do you keep bringing it up?

We would gladly change a win over BYU for 4 more points against Oregon State and AZ State.

Besides, there are many of us that are Y fans too but we can't stand these ignoring posts on the Utah thread.

  • Swoop Salt Lake City, UT
    Dec. 1, 2013 2:54 p.m.

    DraperUteFan

    You're only fooling yourself.

Since a conference championship, let alone a national championship, is a near impossibility, and even qualifying for a bowl is now beyond the realistic expectations of Uteville, beating BYU has become the #1 goal of the kids on the hill.

btw, it's now simply the Fight Hunger Bowl, not that U would know since there's no longer any need for Utah fans to stay current on the changing bowl landscape.

  • Crow Sandy , UT
    Dec. 1, 2013 2:12 p.m.

@cougar sun devil you should talk even less.it took all asu could muster to beat Utah by one point. How long did it take you to win the Pac championship? Utah will get there it will just take a little more depth at key positions.

  • DraperUteFan Draper, UT
    Dec. 1, 2013 1:36 p.m.

True Ute fans love the Utes. Y fans love to think Ute fans dislike BYU and care about nothing else. Oh the narcissism of that thought process. Beating BYU has become a regular occurence and though we still love to beat the boys from Provo, wins in conference are more important.

For those who pull the "yeah, but we have a national championship" card, that was 29 years ago and we all know the debate surrounding the NC that year. Nobody can take it away, but many put an asterisk by that NC (yes, the same could be said for many a NC when the polls decided it).

With the new playoff system, BYU's has a much tougher road to a national title game or a BCS bowl game than Utah does. Unless you wear the clover on your jersey I don't see anyone getting too excited about the independents of college football. Playing USC, Stanford, Michigan, and Michigan State make Notre Dame an attractive BCS option. BYU's schedule is not difficult enough to join that discussion.

I hope they serve lots of Miracle Whip on your Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl sandwich.

  • CougarSunDevil Phoenix, AZ
    Dec. 1, 2013 12:07 p.m.

Why are the uses in the picture holding up a 1 with their fingers? They think they are number 1? Or did they forget the zero for 10? Because it's ASU that's 1 in the south with a chance to be 1 in the conference. Utah is 10 with the end of their season happening now...no bowl for the second year in a row.

  • Crow Sandy , UT
    Dec. 1, 2013 11:47 a.m.

It is still amazing how byu fans run to a Ute article to try and boast about how great their team is. Yet they beat no one of substance including Texas. You are the same team byu you can't beat the teams with athleticism and talent and get by beating the sister of the poor every year. Your tour next year will include trips to the wac,sun belt, and mwc. So the wins and blow outs should continue. But watch out little brother the Utes will get the depth they need too compete and you will still be on the outside looking in.

Gloom and doom predictions for the Utes in the PAC 12 are mere conjecture, while there is solid evidence to indicate that byu and USU will never be as good as Utah. There's truth to the statement that "no matter how bad you say that Utah is, they're better than you're team."

    Ken

Don't kid yourself; the Utes wouldn't have had a prayer of winning the MWC.

Winning conference championships isn't something the Utes do - only 6 WAC/MWC championships in the last half century, Kyle with only one.

Face it, the Utes got exactly what they asked for when they signed up to be a whipping boy for the big boys of the PAC.

  • Lledrav West Jordan, UT

Its interesting how EVERY football article commentary becomes a U vs Y contest.

Anyone remotely objective can tell how deep THE rivalry goes. Despite U fans continual crowing about PAC membership, a poll last spring showed their most passionate game is against BYU. "In the original Twitter poll conducted by the blog Ute Football Central, 64 percent of respondents said they would prefer a rivalry win over a bowl season."

Its obvious that MANY U fans are more AGAINST BYU than they are FOR Utah. That suggests that their motivation as fans will diminish without BYU on their schedule.

Eliminating BYU from their schedule will prove to be a big mistake for the U.
Given conference mediocrity, interest and attendance at U games will decline.

But I'm guessing even as Utah dwells in PAC and national obscurity, the fans who are more anti Y than pro U, will continue to brag about their conference.

Its an interesting study in why people brag - about anything. It makes me wonder if those "fortunate" enough to get a ticket on the great and wonderful Titanic were still bragging to someone while bobbing in the ocean.

I'm sorry Rose Bowl Call Yet, but one Sugar Bowl win trumps all the Las Vegas and Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl Wins combined over a 50-year span. Two bowl game wins in the last 5 years is better than the vast majority of Division 1 schools.

Utah will play in the Grandaddy of them all one day. BYU will continue to play for the Bowl that time forgot every year.

  • David Centerville, UT
    Nov. 30, 2013 11:08 p.m.

Both Utah and BYU are predictable. We know what to expect from them. There may be an occasional, pleasant surprise here and there, but what we have seen the past few years is what we can expect going forward…unless something changes in the system and organization.

The systems and organizations of both teams are designed to achieve what we are seeing.

So sit back and enjoy the ride. Next year will look very similar to the past few years, for both schools.

Except that there won't be a "rivalry" game between them.

So why play the games? Because we always hope for better, and we glow and celebrate in the wins.

    @ PAC12FAN

Everyone IS happy!! Just look at the numerous posts from Ute fans this entire season that say they would rather play a PAC 12 schedule and lose than an independent, MWC or WAC schedule and win. They got their wish!!

Utah was picked to finish 5th in the PAC 12 South. And by 7 points today, they did just that, escaping coming in 6th. Utes should be ecstatic that they avoided the basement. Because they really only performed well against Stanford. They should have easily defeated Oregon State. They did manage to roll it up on Weber State.

AND....their game finished early enough today that their players could still hit the retail stores and get a great deal on a big screen TV to watch all the bowl games this year from their couch. So why all the dire comments? They performed just as they were expected to by the pundits.

AND....they have a winning record (2 of 3) against their rival Colorado. So life is good if you're a Ute. PAC 12 membership, etc, etc, etc.

worf, when you use quotation marks it should be in reference to a literal quote, yet I don't see a single quote that matches what you wrote. In fact, your quotes are not an accurate paraphrase.

Utah did beat good teams this year, unless of course you don't count BYU in that category. Apparently Stanford is chopped liver ranked #8 and likely to climb to the top 5 again after beating Notre Dame and finishing at 10-2.

The Utes played the #1 most difficult schedule in college football this year. All the coaches and players said 5-7 was not acceptable after today's game. Utah lost its best starting wide receiver, starting QB, and two very talented tight ends.

The Lobos finished 3-8 by beating only Utep, New Mexico State, and a struggling Air Force team and playing one of the weakest schedules in the nation. I can't imagine a more apples and oranges comparison.

Tough finish for a team who showed so much promise early on. Seeing how well we have played against even the best of the PAC 12 (defeating Stanford and playing ASU and UCLA tough to the final minute), I'm optimistic for the future.

I attended the Sugar Bowl and Fiesta Bowl and also went to the Sun Bowl and Poinsettia bowls. Any bowl is fun, especially going where it is warm in late December or January, but nothing compares to a BCS bowl. Utah will go bowling again soon and it will be fun. We graduated few seniors today and have some very good talent returning next year.

The QB and secondary need the most attention. The O line should be improved next year. We won 10 of 11 bowl games since 1999. The Cougars during that same stretch were 6-4 in bowl games, with no BCS bowl appearances.

Cougar fans, enjoy your bowl game. I'm still a bit perplexed how you bad mouth a team that played the most difficult schedule in all of college football when you squeaked by a 4-8 Nevada Wolfpack team after a pretty mediocre season.

Our family owns 16 seats And we will renew our tickets again but expect better coaches to help our better athletes. Our receivers need to learn to catch the ball or hit it down. All the tipped balls, dropped balls, fumbled balls are ridiculous.

@Uteology - I have to agree with U, same conference or not, BYU vs. Utah is still the rivalry game for both schools and most fans.

I couldn't find a single comment posted by a Ute on a Buff article in any of the Denver or Boulder papers. And most Colorado fans are happy that Nebraska is being added back on their schedule.

And while I was hoping Notre Dame or Boise St would become our rival, it will never feel like the Holy War.

Utah vs. BYU needs to move back to November permanently.

Good luck in the off-season, and for the next two year hiatus. U have a brutal schedule again next year that will make it tough to get to .500 again. USC will be back, Stanford and Oregon will reload, and ASU, UA, and UCLA continue to look solid for next season.

If CU is our big rival, do you post comments in the Denver Post about the CU rivalry?

If CU is our big rivalry, why can't I name a single player?

If CU is our big rival, why do USU and BYU matter to you at all?

Does anyone in the PAC-12 consider us a big rival?

Down here in OC, no one cares one Whitt about the U. We're not yet even in the conversation. Next year, we'll be rated just above CU in the pre-season polling. We've done nothing this year to enhance our reputation and, if stars matter in recruiting, we have no one creating any excitement among the PAC-12 for the future. A kid both the U and BYU recruited recommitted from Alabama in favor of USC - not the U. We're cashing our PAC-12 checks in relative anonymity.

Admit it: BYU is still our biggest rival and USU is a bigger rival for us than CU.

I wish it were different, but wishing won't make it so.

Anyone else perfectly happy we are in the PAC 12, even if its 3 years of catching up? These teams from the PAC 12 would win the mountain west conference:
    Utah
    USC
    Ucla
    Arizona
    Arizona state
    Washington
    Washington state
    Oregon
    Oregon state
    Stanford

Recruiting has been improving compared to our mountain west recruiting. In fact, the last couple years we have averaged #6 recruiting in the PAC 12. Within 1-2 more years when those guys are upper classmen we will be at least an average PAC 12 team. And that's something to be very very proud of.

    Onward and upward

Man, if we would have played like this all year, we would be playing for the National Championship! We are clearly the best team in the Nation!

Another Saturday watching Utah play in the Big Leagues and checking to see how byu is doing vs the minor leagues. Go Utes.

Utah prevailing in the Pulte Homes Cellar Dweller Bowl.

With a victory here the Utes will finish out of the cellar in their three year reign in the PAC-10.2.

Congratulations to all the loyal Ute fans who have stuck it out. And to coach Whittingham

Lifelong Ute, don't read too much into it. 1-7 (looking like 2-7 now) this year shows we still have a ways to go in the conference. Every win is a good sign, though. Every year will be a new adventure, as will every game.

This team has shown a ton of promise. As close as we were in several key games, games that weren't close our first couple years with the big boys proves we aren't that far off from competing for PAC 12 titles. And whittingham is the man for the job. He has taken us to national glory before. And he will do so again.

    Too easy!

Utah about to do what no other team in Utah could do: beat our rival

After watching the PAC 12 go 10-0 against the WAC 2.0 and WAC- like byu, shows how big of a gap there is even between the 10th best PAC 12 team Utah and the best WAC teams(byu, usu, and Boise)

A small fish in a big pond is still bigger than a big fish in a WAC little pond

The only program with a national future in Utah,

    Is UTAH

    Go utes
