Sorry missed out on the name, but hey it doesn't change the FACT UVU has been to the post season since Utah has been.
So after more research 161 NCAA teams make post season tournaments.

Yes. Went to Beavers game with a friend from OSU. Absolutely loved cheering on the Beavers. Except for the muss,I saw little enthusiasm for the utes and I recall being very surprised at the announced attendance. Clearly many season ticket holders stayed home.

Great to be a Cougar fan with a team that can compete against the big boys and a football game to watch in December.

@ekute - "Just like in football, byu can't win the big games. But they love getting "exposed" on espn."

Were we exposed in BB by Stanford or Texas? Were we exposed in football by Texas, Boise St, Georgia Tech or Houston? I thought those were all big games. The season is 12 games in football and about 30 games in basketball. When was the last time U reached .500 in either sport?

Honestly, would an objective ESPN reporter or SI writer say BYU or Utah had the better football season? And when was the last time Utah had the better basketball season than BYU?

Want to go deeper, let's talk Rugby or Volleyball or Soccer or Cross Country or Baseball.

Face it, Utah has lost its sports identity. It is a commuter school that got a lucky invite to the PAC because Texas turned them down, BYU wouldn't play on Sunday and U were a better choice than Wyoming.

Let me help you out with your Basketball analysis chris b because it looks like you could use it...

Utah played 18 games last year against RPI 100 teams... They won 6 for a 33% winning percentage... BYU played 15 games against RPI top 100 teams... They also had 6 wins for a 40% winning ratio... Neither were great but BYU did well enough to get an invite into the N.I.T. and as we all know BYU won three in a row to make it back to Madison Square Gardens where they lost to the eventual chap in the semis...

    Other important RPI info:

. BYU(58), Weber State(78) , Utah State(109) all finished the season with much better RPIs than the utes(159).

    . BYU's SOS last year (75th), Utah's (77th).

. According to the RPI, Utah would have finished 7th out of 9 teams in the WCAC. Instead, they "snagged" 10th place in the PAC 12.

. And, according to the RPI, BYU would have finished 6th in the PAC 12... And instead, they finished 3rd in the WCAC.

Exposed on ESPN??? lol... Something the utes will never have to worry about...

That's what you call revenue and recruiting opportunities and when your program is one basket shy of being undefeated against a number of "superconference representatives" that kind of exposure also brings you great recruits... i.e. four 4 stars in 2 years and a bevy full of 3 stars... Thanks to our partners with ESPN...

The truth is BYU is recruiting all over America because they play on television that everyone can see every single game...

  • poyman Lincoln City, OR
    Nov. 26, 2013 6:56 p.m.

So the ute fans say that BYU can't win the big games eh???

Now granted, Weber State, Stanford and Texas are no Evergreen State, U C Davis, Lamar or Savanah State but they are pretty decent and both have a good chance of going to the big dance in March so I am okay with the Cougs record so far...

The Truth is the utes played the same schedule they would be 2-4 right now with three 20+ point losses... Stanford, Iowa State and Texas would have beat Utah badly (20+) and Weber State would beat them by 10...

I think if I had to go into Conference lay and the Bracketology in March... I would much prefer to have the Cougs Preseason record than the record of the utes. In fact, I think anyone who knows anything about College Hoops would say the same exact thing...

But, you got to schedule who you can beat when you have the chance I guess...Thank goodness the utes have NAIA and Division II and III to fall back on...

Are utah fans actually trash talking BYU basketball? Really? Generally one trash talks from a position of strength.

Win some real games and then you can trash BYU basketball. Until then, you'll have to trash talk football. Oh wait, I guess you can't really do that either. How about gymnastic or skiing. Yeah, that works.

I expect BYU to lose to Wichita State. They are ranked. BYU is not. Most people expect them to lose. That is why it is called an "upset" when a ranked team loses. There is no shame in losing to a team that is ranked higher than you. In fact, most teams do lose to those ranked higher.

I don't think BYU will shoot well. I hope they prove me wrong, but the last time they played games on back-to-back nights, they came out really, really flat. I expect the same tonight, unfortunately. Once again, though, I hope they surprise me.

Utah basketball? Why are we talking about a non-entity? There are only two relevant programs in the state of Utah: BYU and USU.

Yeah but we play in a prestigious conference with 4-5 star athletes. It doesn't matter if our actual attendance is less than most high school's in the state. We have thousands of fans dressed as empty red seats. When you are in an elite conference using inaccurate statistics/comments (like our POTUS), is all fair game.

How far back do Utah fans have to go to find the last time Utah went 5-0 against Top 25 teams during the regular season?

It's funny how 1998 is still like yesterday for Utah, but 2010 is like ancient history for BYU.

Here's little reminder of the current state of BYU and Utah basketball during the Dave Rose era (since Utah hasn't had an "era" to speak of since Majerus left).

    BYU 214-67(76%), 8 20+ win seasons, 4 conf champs, 6 NCAAs, 2 NITs, 1 Nat'l POY
    Utah 121-137(47%), 6 losing seasons, 1 conf champ, 1 NCAA, 0 NITs, 0 Nat'l POY

BYU has won 7 in a row, 11 of 12, 12 of 15 during the Dave Rose era

It's obvious why Utah has to play such a weak non-conference schedule; that's the only way Utah can possibly finish with a winning record.

The commentators on the ESPNU broadcast last night raving about the freshman Mika said within the next 3 years "BYU will be a final four type team". Unlike chrissy, those guys know talent when they see it.

"Stanford and Texas were good wins, but certainly not great wins(as neither of them is even projected to be in the top half of their conference)."

No one that I know of said the above were "great" wins, but thanks anyway for your thoughtful reminder chrissy. We would have never known.

    Go Cougars!!!

  • Back Overland Park, KS
    Nov. 26, 2013 1:50 p.m.

I was at the game last night. BYU did all they could to hold off the Texas Bigs...which is good experience for Mika. Austin was tormented, Worthington hasn't come up from the high school level...but, that's the best we have. The refs let Texas pound us for 30 minutes, then suddenly flipped and called every teeny, tiny thing (which is how the rule book reads this year). Wichita State is good -- very very good! I would be surprised to win this game. If we do, it will be because we are shooting lights out for most of the game (which can happen). Talent wise, WS has the edge (plus the crowd), but you play for these types of opportunities, so let's see what we can do tonight?

Say all you want about stats, and rpi's,strength of schedules, and rankings, and blah, blah blah.

Who passes the eye test? Who would you rather watch in person? For most people sports is entertainment.

I'll choose BYU anyday. They have some legit players, play an exciting brand of basketball and for entertainment value alone, you'll get the most bang for your buck.

I wouldn't go watch Utah if somebody gave me free tickets. To me it would be a waste of time.

With each game, I get more excited about the future of BYU Bball. This team responded very well to a tight & heartbreaking loss against ISU. I doubt we'll beat Wichita St. but we can hang with them and it wouldn't be a huge upset if we won. Shooting 80%+ from 3 like last night would certainly help. The biggest concern is the streakiness of that outside shooting. We need to get better interior D and continue to get the assists working it inside ourselves. There are visible improvement over last year for many players with room for more. These next 5 years will be some exciting basketball for the Coug's.

Utah opened the 2012-13 PAC season losing 5 straight, and 7 of their first 8 conference games, all but eliminating the Utes from the conference race by January 16th.

Utah "improved" during conference play, but it's obvious that Utah's pre-season cupcake schedule did absolutely nothing to help the Utes get ready for conference play.

If you think that beating Evergreen State at home is going to prepare the Utes to face the rigors of PAC 12 conference play, you're only fooling yourself.

The Utes might get a break-through win or two in an 18-game conference schedule, but their overall conference record will still be mediocre to lousy.

  • 1978 Salt Lake City, UT

"byu is just inept at beating any good teams."

BYU's road victory last season over Southern Miss in the NIT (RPI #34) was better than any win Utah had.

In the 2010 - 2011 season BYU was 5-0 against top 25 teams during the regular season. San Diego State twice, UNLV twice and Arizona once by 22 pts.

    You were saying?

  • BeSmart Cheyenne, WY
    Nov. 26, 2013 12:55 p.m.

I have been the first one to say that Utah has improved.
BYU is much better than last year as well.
129 teams play in the post season, before too much pomposity is shown. Even Utah Valley University a full Division 1 team for 5 years has had a post season birth since the last time the Utes were invited.
If I were only a Ute fan BYU basketball articles I would avoid.

  • skywalker Palo Alto, CA
    Nov. 26, 2013 12:47 p.m.

    Christopher B

Utah also had more bottom 250+ losses than BYU last season; a lot more, since BYU didn't have any such losses.

For all of your chest-beating about how great you were picking up a couple of Top 100 RPI wins, you still only managed to improve your conference record from 3-15 to 5-13, proving that all of those pre-season cupcakes didn't do anything to prepare you for conference play.

    Current Sagarin Rankings
    #25 BYU(4-1) - SOS #78
    #79 Utah(4-0) - SOS #350

Sagarin and the NCAA selection committee don't even count wins against non-Div 1 teams.

Bottom line: the Utes don't have a prayer of getting an at-large NCAA bid with their pathetic, worst in the country, pre-season schedule.

  • Christopher B Ogden, UT
    Nov. 26, 2013 12:38 p.m.

Yes, Utah had several very bad losses, mostly at the beginning of the season. By that, I'm not saying they don't count, just that we saw a lot of improvement.

Byu fans just need to use a little logic when they laugh at Utah's schedule, as they did last year, when Utah had MORE top 100 rpi wins than byu.

Either Utah's schedule was pretty good

byu is just inept at beating any good teams.

    Either way, LOL

So if I am understanding right it is better to lose on the Pac-12 where no one east of the rockies can watch, than losing on ESPN or NBC that a lot of people can watch?
Plus how are close losses in both football and basketball "exposed"?
Did UCLA expose Utah? Did OSU, ASU, and Oregon expose Utah? Did Utah expose Stanford?
40 million people can watch the Pac-12 networks (who knows how many subscribe)
50 Million can watch BYUtv. LOL

  • BeSmart Cheyenne, WY
    Nov. 26, 2013 11:55 a.m.

I may be mistaken but 6 out of 12 places is the top half.
Stanford was picked 6th in the Pac therefore in the top half (by the media).
Your argument about top 100 wins is interesting but kind of funny, lets use the RPI rankings for the two teams
BYU 58th RPI and played the 83rd toughest schedule
Utah 159th RPI and played the 77th toughest schedule
BYU- semifinals of the NIT tourney
    Utah- No tournament invite.
With the current post-season tournaments 129 teams play in the post-season (no invite your team is bad)
In fact in 2012 Utah Valley University received a post-season birth in the CBI.
So it looks as though Utah is trying to catch up to UVU and be invited to a post season tournament.
    Have a good day.

Wichita State is a very good outside shooting team. BYU will have a good chance to pull off the upset if they could keep stride in their outside shooting. If Haws gets hot and hence leave pressure off Carlino, then I like BYU's chances. It will be a tough game for BYU no question with very little room of error if they expect to win. Go Cougars!
