There is a psychological study called "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How
Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated
Self-Assessments" by Justin Kruger and David Dunning. It should be required
reading for anyone interested in how this presidency went off the rails. One of their observations:"...[P]eople who are
unskilled...suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous
conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of
the metacognitive ability to realize it."Barack Obama simply
doesn't know what he doesn't know. He's been told by so many
people that he's the smartest guy in the room, he has come to believe it.
Somehow he came to believe he was capable of directing the nation's health
care system, of which he has made a shambles. He can either accept
humbly that he has botched everything, or he can continue lying his way through.
Past behavior indicates he will tell more lies. He will be the last to know that
his credibility is gone.
"Obama is like someone who burns down your house. Then shows up with an
empty water bucket. Then lectures you about how defective the house was."The most accurate definition of Obamacare ever given! Priceless!
Can we just re-name this guy George "Shill"?When Obama lied,
people cried,When Bush lied, people died....and I'm still
waiting for GW Bush's apologies.
The Obama legacy will be positive in spite of the nattering nabobs of negativism
like George Will.
We're out of Iraq, and getting out of Afghanistan. We didn't go
to war with Syria. We're not going to war with Iran. The DJIA is
at record levels.Corporate profits are at record levels.Healthcare
inflation is at its lowest level in 50 years. The federal deficit is down
sharply since just last year. (Yes, still a long way to go.)Thanks,
George, for so reliably viewing our nation through the dark and blurry funhouse
mirrors of hyper-conservatism.
Oh my gosh, these guys are going all out trying to make people believe this
presidency is a failure. We'll I guess I can't blame them. But they
will only have this one shot at it, and they are throwing all they have at it.
Even this intellectually stunted attempt by Will. But it's not going to
work. There is absolutely no way the ACA can be adequately judged in its first
few weeks. Get back to me in a year. First of all this news cycle is going to
disappear, no matter how much the desperate Republicans try to keep it a story,
its already fading quickly. Second of all, the web site is going to be fixed,
and after all the cooked up stories of how bad the regulations are for people
become a distant memory, real people, that are actually being very well served
by no caps and no precondition and the other good things in the ACA will rule
the day, and history. The media might not be so interested in these people that
are being helped right now, after all, negatively always makes a better story,
but they are there.
LDS Liberal:5 years later and liberals like you are still trying to
defer and critique of Obama by raising one about Bush. What does Bush have to
do with this current health care fiasco?Yes, Bush was terrible.
Time to move on.
Republican receipt:Gather as many false notions as possible,
sprinkle generously with hate and stir as long as necessary. It
worked in the war against workers unions, it will work in the war against
President Obama and it’s going to work in the war against America.
Romneycare had signed up less than 200 people it's first month but
he'd totally make a good president. Obamacare signed up less than 200,000
people it's first month and it's a sign he's a failure (the US is
not 1000x the population of Massachusetts, Obamacare did better than Romneycare
by 7x after accounting for that). Romneycare had a slow start and then picked up
and we're seeing signs of the same from Obamacare where some of the
exchanges are reporting double the October enrollment in just the first half of
November. Just give it some time.
Bebyebe,Great quote but I doubt many know where it is from.
I'm getting wet from all the republican crying. He didn't take your
guns nor activate the sleeper cells you were sure of. Why would anyone think you
can predict the future? !
The ability of Obama's supporters to rationalize is beyond the pale.
Denial is NOT a river in Egypt.
If we forget about the mistrusts like you can keep your plan, you can keep your
doctor, you will save $2500.00 per family, I didn't know the website
didn't work etc and completely ignore the website failures, we still have
the simple fact that obamacare will not improve our healthcare at all.
Obamacare makes things worse and costs us much more. This alone will damage
Obama beyond repair.
There are two types of people out there. There are doers.... and those that
criticize the doers. I am not saying that what doers do is always right, but it
is at least doing something. Mr. Will funnels he great skills not into building
and improving, but to an intellectual quest of tearing those down who do. Rather than weekly focusing on what Obama is doing wrong, why not expend
a portion of that effort on identifying those that are doing it right. But even
that - for Mr. Will and many others - is too much to ask. Rather, they sit on
the sidelines, criticizing those who actual work for the betterment of man.If we have the wrong leader, then either lead, or let us know who the
right leader is.
Obama recently honored Bill Clinton with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Bill
Clinton is the personification of what is the matter with our country. He is
proud and arrogant, dishonest, cruel, adulterer, liar, and the list goes on and
on. The fact that Obama gave Clinton this award, cheapens the award and its
significance. It shows that Obama is either a very poor judge of character or he
just doesn't understand what real character in a man is. At any rate, the
Presidential Medal of Freedom award is now meaningless.
How do you keep your own doctor? After the Navy and having a
different doctor in every port, I became hooked up with a general practice
doctor.Ten years later we moved to Salt Lake City and found a new
doctor. Two years later stopped going to that doctor because he
wanted to do an unnecessary operation.New doctor was my same age and
I thought I was fixed for life. Several years later he and his family went on a
church mission to Switzerland.Found a new doctor only to lose him to
the LDS hospital in a staff position. My next doctor lasted only a
few years before taking a job at the Huntsman clinic. The next
doctor closed his Salt Lake practice so that he could move to Park City where he
would be closer to his HIV patients. At that point since I was
eligible for veterans care I went to the George E. Wahllen VA hospital. I get
a new main doctor every 18 or so months and a different doctor for each
specialty. I probably could have kept the first doctor in SLC right
up to the end of my life.
JSBYeh, It’s just like when Utah received the award for being
the best business state in the United States.
"...the personification of what is the matter with our country. He is proud
and arrogant, dishonest, cruel, adulterer, liar, and the list goes on and
on...".I totally agree. However, you forgot to
mention that paragon of virtue and character Republican Newt Gingrich, one
of the top 2012 Republican Candidates for President of The United States of
America. No problem. Republican Newt Gingrich was all
of the above and more.Exactly.Yet... Republican voters
especially, in the conservative South, as well as Republican King-makers, all
over America, fell all over themselves pushing Republican Newt Gingrichs'
candidacy. The fact that Republicans pushed Republican Newt
Gingrichs' candidacy, at all, shows they, as well, are a very poor judge of
character or just don't understand what real character in a man is.
No, his followers are mesmerized and will follow him like lemmings.
@LDS LiberalYou may have a long wait for George Bush's apology.
A rejoinder to Will's article might be:George W. Bush is like
the guy who sets your house on fire and then shows up with a bucket of gasoline
to put out the flames. He then lectures you on how Private Enterprise could have
burned your house down much quicker.
To All: There once was a time when people took responsibility for their own
lives, sacrificed for family, and spent their time and money taking care of
those two. Not so today. 47 million on food stamps and welfare is too great a
temptation for the crooks in Washington. Wars for Republicans and welfare for
Democrats, and corporate-government agreements for both. In the meantime, our
country declines economically, people are left in shanties and bordellos for
their future 'growth and enjoyment", made happy by Democrats and
Republican policies that destroy anything meaningful. Their supporters write
columns and give "meaningful" responses to articles such as thisThe
delusion and corruption continuesan unbeatable combination to enslave and make
dependent and keep them all "happy" with bogu
"He is proud and arrogant, dishonest, cruel, adulterer, liar, and the list
goes on and on. "For a crowd who adores the founding fathers,
this phrase well describes a good number of them. It is rather ironic that this
same crowd nearly deifies these founders, either seem to either know very little
about them, or have the ability to selectively apply certain standards to people
they like, and apply others to people they don't.Point is you
don't have to be a person of supper high moral stature to have done
something significant for their country. The two are not mutually exclusive of
each other. Its this fairy tale disney like world that some live in that fail
to recognize just about everyone here is human, but that doesn't stop them
from sometimes achieving great things. If this standard were to be
applied equitably... not many would pass the bar. Republican or Democrat.
@Semi Lights "Great quote but I doubt many know where it is from."As I recall, it was used in an attempt to deflect criticism from the
actions of a corrupt and inept politician. Not so different from
"The place to begin understanding the unraveling of his presidency is page
274 of "The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama." The author,
David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker, quotes Valerie Jarrett, perhaps
Obama's closest and longest-serving adviser, on her hero's
amazingness:""He knows exactly how smart he is. ... I think
that he has never really been challenged intellectually. ... He's been
bored to death his whole life. He's just too talented to do what ordinary
people do. He would never be satisfied with what ordinary people do." We finally find out what this dude is good at...He is very talented at
thinking he's SMART! and that my friends is his qualifications to be the
telepromter in chief...the dude is a great reader, period - but there is no
evidence to suggest he has any clue of what he is reading
Mr. Will, ordinary people don't find Bin Laden and bring him justice.
The Dow Jones is above 16,000, is this ordinary? Coming out of the recession
in June of 2009, was that cool or what? The Dow was 6,500 then. Mr. Will
lacks positive faith and it is Mr. Will who has lived in Washington DC his whole
life and who doesn't do what ordinary people do. How many people write
for a living?
It's all ludicrous. Bush's numbers were even lower. Presidents go
through ups and downs and then it passes. Unfortunately, the Republicans put
party and whatever special interests they are serving ahead of the country in an
unprecedented fashion in dealing with this President. Obama will get through
the down period. In the end, he will be fine. The nation will be fine, unless
the GOP wins the White House and does to us what they did the last time they
were in power.
Are we witnessing how a political party - which has existed since the mid 19th
century finally takes itself into an extreme corner, denounces all cooperation
with its opposition and chooses candidates for high office secretly tied to big
business - unravels??
Two things about liberals, they most likely miss the point and they always have
someone to blame. Take off the blinders and just see the facts, obamacare will
damage the country for years to come.
As usual, George nails it and all the socialist/liberal Obama sycophants can do
is attack Will personally and blame Bush. They would do well to listen, pause,
think, and learn.
To 4601 5:01 p.m. Nov. 24, 2013No, his followers are mesmerized and

We have always been expected to just take it on faith that Barack Obama is
super-human smart. Yet, unlike other presidents, he refuses to release his
college transcripts and IQ scores. As the old Wendy's commercials used to
ask: WHERE'S THE BEEF??? Obviously, this carefully crafted image is now
unraveling (oh my is it ever). Even with a friendly news media propping him up,
he is quickly becoming a national symbol of incompetence. This will be Barack
Haters gonna hate.
Max - please, what were Reagan's college scores and his IQ test? Any of
the Bush's do likewise. We know Bush II did horrible. Those grades were
leaked without his permission. And you really want to compare Reagan's
grades he got from Eureka College in Illinois, 1932. Really? What
you are providing a perfect example of is a double standard. Where are the
former presidents birth certificates? Where are their posted grades? Where are
their IQ test? Where are Mitt Romney's?The point here, as one
who voted for several Republicans, and have served on the election committees of
several Republicans..... is none of them have ever been required to provide
these items. So it begs the question why now? Is it a Democrat only
requirement? A Black person only requirement? An Illinois only
requirement? If those self proclaimed non-RINO conservatives really
want to claim the higher moral ground here - they need to honestly answer these
questions honestly. How are you morally justifying this higher bar?
Fast and furious is the beginning of the end of Obama, oh wait..Never has there been a disgrace like the IRS scandal, ahh just a minute..You were spying on reporters you need to be impe..hang on, what
Benghazi..Ahhhhhhh you're evil, incompetent, far worse than
Watergate...What a website doesn't work? Never in the history
of America...I think I'm going to get me a bumper sticker like
tarbaby5 (what a moniker)suggests that reads, liberal/socialist Obama
sycophant, just to watch people's faces.
In a casual reading of the posts, those who are on Obama's side have given
no support for Obama: All they do is criticize Republicans, Conservatives and
Bush. Where is their argument to support how ObamaCare was voted on? Where is
their argument to defend Obama for NOT implementing ObamaCare? Where is their
argument to justify the three-years and $600,000,000 spend on a defective
website? Where is their argument to show that Obama has any clue of what the
duties of the President of the United States require him to do?Yes,
George Will is absolutely correct when he wrote: "Congressional Democrats
are White House poodles." I would extend that statement to anyone who
supports Obama without being able to Constitutionally defend Obama's
LDS LiberalYou say When Obama lied people cried When
Bush lied people died,I wonder if that is what the families of those
killed in Bengazi are saying. If Bush lied he didn't blame it on
a video like the dear leader did. Another empty bucket.
@pragmatistferlife - Hey, I have another one for you.An
administration was caught selling drugs to fund weapon sales to the Islamic
Republic of Iran.... remember that? As a result, the following people were
charged and most convicted (those not convicted were pardoned by Bush Sr.) Lets
see if you recall any of these names. Caspar Weinberger, Elliott Abrams,
Robert C. McFarlane, Alan D. Fiers, Richard R. Miller, Clair George, Richard
Secord , Thomas G. Clines, Carl R. Channel, John Poindexter, Oliver North, Duane
R. Clarridge, Albert Hakim, Joseph F. Fernandez. All indicted and charged with
felonies. If that isn't enough, we can go on to the HUD price
fixing and grant rigging scandles which resulted in 7 administration officials
being convicted. Then there was the Savings and Loan crisis, Inslaw
affair, Michael Deaver - Reagans Chief of Staff, convicted on lying to congress,
The EPA scandal with the head of the EPA Rita Lavelle convicted of Perjury. We can go on and on.. but seems time heals all memories, doesn't
I don't think it's unraveling... I think it's just re-grouping to
make their legacy (as all administrations do in the last few years in
office). All Presidents who got a second term in my lifetime have
done it. The focus turns to trying to make their legacy.
Republicans lead the way with health care reform initiatives.
Mike RichardsSouth Jordan, Utah======== The
difference between you and me Mike?I'm an American.I'm not a Republican.I'm not a Democrat.I may disagree
with decisions, butI do not wish the President, ANY President [even
Bush] to fail - because then America fails.I do as the Prophets have
asked, and I pray for our leaders.Do you?
'What does Bush have to do with this current health care fiasco?' Bush sent our troops into Iraq. Bush sent our troops into
Afghanistan. Bush signed the Patriot Act. Bush signed the Tax cuts
for the 1%. National unemployment doubled under Bush. National debt,
doubled under Bush. Katrina Waterboarding Finical Meltdown Today: 400 filibusters in the Senate. 82
filibustered justicies, 86 for every other US president in US history.
Jobs bill, filibustered. No troops in Syria No troops in Libya
Iran has agreed to no Nukes Dow over 16,000, a new record.
I'll stop blaming Bush thing stop having his signature on it.
PaganSalt Lake City, UTGreat post.I find it ironic
that when Obama took office, and the Dow was at a low -- it was all Obama's
fault. Now that it has rebounded, and THEN some -- the GOP is silent
about it.Thanks for making that point.
@Nate:"Past behavior indicates he will tell more lies."You apparently don't fathom the centuries old methodologies of the
religion of his ancestry and thus his fundamental mental underpinnings. That religion approves and authorizes lying where it will move one toward a
particular goal. We see this phenomenon unfolding very nicely over the life of
his political career. And what is the goal of said religion? As
announced on many occasions, 'death to America and Americans.'@LDS Liberal:"...and I'm still waiting for GW Bush's

You gotta love when LDS Liberal gets on his religious soap-box. It always
sounds so sincere, doesn't it? It's even better when he gets on his,
"I'm an American", soap-box (insinuating that if you criticize
Obama you are un-American).I saw these same type of posts coming
from the more rabid wide-eyed Bush supporters back when he was President too...
so I understand where it's coming from. But I seem to remember many people
like Pagan saying it was their "DUTY" as an Americans to question and
even criticize President Bush. Somehow when the party moniker changes... the
shoe instantly switches to the other foot in discussions like this. The Presidency isn't unraveling. And just because some people question
the great Obama doesn't mean they are "Un-American". It
was GOOD to question and even criticize Bush and some of his decisions... and
it's also a needed thing to question and sometimes even criticize the great

Utah Blue Devil, I am merely wondering how in the world this
super-smart image began. Transcripts are not required (and I didn't say a
word about birth certificates, lol) but many other presidents release them but
Obama will not. Classmates have said that Obama was a very average student. That
is all we know. And now after five years as president we STILL have no evidence
that would indicate that his intelligence is above average. In fact, what we
have seen so far would suggest just the opposite. Again, how in the world did
this notion of mega intelligence come about? Just curious.
To "atl134" your numbers are WAY off. The truth is that using the
Federal Government web site, less than 27,000 people actually signed up for
health insurance using the Federal Government site. Many people created
accounts on the web site, but few actually got insurance. Read "Almost
27,000 selected insurance via HealthCare.gov" at USA today to get the actual
numbers. To "UtahBlueDevil" what is Obama doing right? He
has gone from one scandal to another while pumping up the federal debt faster
than any president before him.To "Henry Drummond" you are
wrong about Bush. He would have done the same thing as Obama, it would have
only taken him another 10 minutes to get there. Obama is nothing more than Bush
on steroids. To "Pagan" and what has Obama done? He took us
into Libya, Egypt, sent arms to Syria, sent troops to Africa. Sent a surge of
troops to Afghanistan. Obama made the worst parts of the Patriot act permanent,
reauthorized the Bush tax cuts. Under Obama the labor participation rate is the
lowest in over 30 years, true unemployment is still above 15%. We are still
have not recovered from the Recession.
@Max Charlotte, NC:"Transcripts are not required (and I didn't
say a word about birth certificates, lol) but many other presidents release them
but Obama will not."We will never see these documents (at least
as long as he's in the White House) because they will likely show he
registered as a student at Occidental and Columbia as (gasp) foreign student
Barry Soetoro."And now after five years as president we STILL
have no evidence that would indicate that his intelligence is above
average."His (admitted) illegal drug usage in school probably
contributed to that.
LDS Liberal,When did Bush lie?Oh, you mean he lied about
WMDs in Iraq, just like the UN Security Council, Tony Blair, John Kerry, Hillary
Clinton and a host of others that supported fervently the war in Iraq?Obama lied about getting us out of Afghanistan and people are still dying.
There is as much blood on the hands of Barry as there are on GW.
How many hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs directly because of the
economic polices of BHO?How many will now die because of ObamaCare
as they no longer have health insurance?
Contrary to what all you libs think, George Will is collectively the smartest
person in the building. Way smarter than all of you put together. He's
even smarter than me.
LDS Liberal,At 8:52, you wrote,"When Obama lied,
people cried,When Bush lied, people died."You work for the
defense department. After you resign you job, people might believe your
postings. Until then, it seems that money is more important than political
rhetoric. As others have stated, when the Benghazi
"situation" was unfolding, Obama was playing cards with some of his
Secret Service people. He was not concerned about people who were targeted. He
ignored the Seal who had "painted" the target, who could have saved
those who were to die, had Obama put down his cards and acted, just for a
minute, like the "Commander In Chief", whose job it was to protect
Americans who are residing on American soil in foreign lands. Instead, he told
us that a "movie" had caused that problem, he jailed the "movie
maker" and then he pretended, against all evidence, that we had not been
attacked on the anniversary of 9/11.After you change jobs, maybe
then you'll have a soap-box to stand on. Until then, you take money from
the military whose job it is to use deadly force.Obama's
Presidency is a farce.
mohokat..You say When Obama lied people cried When Bush lied people
died,I wonder if that is what the families of those killed in
Bengazi are saying. If Bush lied he didn't blame it on a video
like the dear leader did. Another empty bucketSo what did the
families say of the 52..yes 52 people including one ambassador that were killed
in embassy and consulate attacks under Bush. No one is "blaming Bush"
as your next retort is likely to say. What I am saying is one consulate attack
and four dead under Obama. 13 attacks (one with a weeks notice...yea notice)and
52 killed under Bush. Your ire and sad poetry is hollow and
The Iraq war and economic collapse is hard to replicate.
I've read many of the comments here about Will's article. I support
Will on his conclusions and want to remind everyone that not only is Pres. Obama
incompetent on the health care matter but also with most domestic issues and
even more so on foreign policy matters. Someone earlier said the even though
Bush lied, it caused death, what about Obama's mistakes! Obamacare will
cause lots of pain and suffering when people can't get good health care. In
addition, the President's poor record on the economy will also cause people
to suffer as they will not be able to work good jobs where they will be covered
by health insurance. Last the President is not helping with race relations, but
has soured them with his comments, does this not also cause pain?
America voted in BHO. Now you got him. Enjoy him. Come what may and LOVE him.
America: you're now getting what you asked for, what you begged for. I
don't recognize my country anymore. Merry Christmas! (if that's still
legal to say).
