What does a little bird in a mine have to do with an avalanche? I am trying to see the connection. I suppose that the guy quote was referring to the use of canary to detect poisonous levels of gas in coal mines, but I how does a small avalanche relate to that?

I believe he was saying that just as canary being affected by poisonous gases in a coal mine being a warning to miners, this small avalanche that didn't kill anyone is a warning to back-country skiers that larger, killer avalanches are looming. Seems perfectly apt to me.
