Utah's skid into its 2nd annual PAC-12 doormatdom is looking more and more likely. WSU is a team on the rise, while Utah has been getting worse by the week. While I'd like to see the Utes succeed and go bowling, I think those dreams may very well be upended this Saturday in Pullman, WA.

Perhaps if the Utes just pretend that the red cougars are wearing white and blue, they may change their fate...but even that may not be enough this year.

"... We gave them four touchdowns basically.”

This Reilly guy needs to talk less and defend more.

There are only 3 possible bowls that will be looking for an outside team, and there are far more attractive teams that utah with better records and more of a name, not to mention those bowls are all back east, a long way from the utah "fan"base. I'm not trying to just rip on them here but the chance they go to a bowl with 6 wins is probably less than 50%.

As for the kraft fight hunger, well they have the 6th pick of pac 12 teams and I really doubt they'd take an at best 10th place utah team when they could get a top 6 pac12 team but I suppose a girl can dream.

Granted, WSU isn't a stellar team by any measure; yet they beat Arizona at home, who beat Utah. We'll also have to see what the U's QB situation is this week. Right now though, things are looking dicey for this Saturday, IMHO.

What do you think about the prospect of setting a new NCAA Record by being the first team EVER to lose to their rival 5 times in 4 years?

It takes a "special program" to be able to do that for sure

I am a BYU first, but also a Utah fan 50 weeks a year (football game and B-ball game weeks aside). Diehard Ute supporters need some patience. The move into the PAC 12 is a huge jump week to week compared to the previous level of competition. We heard that for years, but now we are seeing it first hand. I certainly agree it is better to lose to Arizona State in a heartbreaker than play Idaho State, a team that would lose to Bingham! Go Cougs, beat The Irish!!!

My favorite person in the crowd is the lady with the hood in the near center of the picture. She looks like she's going to either punch someone or break down and cry. I hope someone buys her chicken pot pie or something to cool those emotions. Nothing like a pot pie. Except maybe a hot pocket. Maybe even a hug. Hugs go a long way.

Utah's only chance for a bowl would be one that another conference can't fill. Say for instance the Big 10 or ACC don't have enough teams with 6 wins to qualify. It's a bit of a long shot even at that. The Oregon St., Arizona and ASU losses were killers.

Interesting stats and a good post; Thanks!

You dont know college football to well eh? Navy is currently on an 11 game win streak versus Army - a much bigger rivalry game than Utes and Cougs will ever be.

Perhaps a remedial math class at BYU SLC campus :)

I think most realistic Utah fans would have told you their expectations for this season were 6 or 7 wins. Nobody would have picked that one of those wins would come against 5th ranked Stanford but they played a good clean game and got that win.

My point is that the Utes aren't really that far off from where most thought they would be. The difference is that once they knocked off Stanford, a lot of fans and local media started predicting 8 wins etc. This conference is too good right now. There have obviously been a number of games that the Utes should have won. Most notibly the Arizona game. They played horrible in that game against a team they should have been able to beat.

I believe the Utes have continued to close the gap in talent and there is no quick fix to the problem. The facilities are now in place and the coaching staff is good. Utah has played the top teams as close as anyone this year.

I hope they can get two more wins to become bowl eligible, the extra practices would be huge for this team.

Go Utes!

I'm glad that the stats are appreciated.

Of the teams who have qualified for a bowl but won't occupy a conference bowl spot, there are already at least 3 who have 7+ wins at this point. This number will surely increase over the next couple of weeks.

Given that the Utes' best case scenario is 6 wins, the amount of control that they have over their own bowl destiny appears pretty limited at this point.

I meant Army. My bad. They didn't qualify for their bowl. Also, the SEC And Big 10 are both likely to leave a bowl unplaced.

Utah will get to 6-6 and go bowling.

Ore man_am_i,

And how many times has Navy beaten army twice in one year?

Thus, FIVE times in FOUR Years?

Yes, a remedial math class would be helpful for some. Or reading.

What universe do you live in? Trevor Reilly needs to defend more? Have you watched a single Utah game? I'm sure you did watch the Utah-BYU game where Trevor destroyed the Y offense. 13.5 tackles for loss, 7 sacks. He needs to defend more? Come out from under the bridge and watch a game or two.

It sounds like you're REALLY hoping that Tennessee loses at home to 6-4 Vanderbilt this weekend. I can't imagine they will lose at 2-8 Kentucky the following week.

A 6-6 Tennessee team would be guaranteed a bowl birth, whereas a 6-6 Utah team will be hoping there are enough leftovers to go around.

Sorry Chrissy,
The only bowl the utsies will qualify for is the "Moral Victory" bowl. They will have well over the 6 required moral victories. The only problem is that there are no other programs that count moral victories so the utes will win by default and can start to fill up that new trophy case with their very first trophy.

If a team gives up 44 points, the defense didn't do a good enough job. I'm surprised you're arguing that point.

Ute season ended with their bowl game in Provo!

I think the U is really a victim of the injury bug this year. Had the U kept Wilson healthy all year and kept that continuity I suspect some of the close losses would been wins. Often times a teams record looks alot worse than things really are especially when trying to play with key injuries from game to game.
