The only reasons might be: He has no assets, he has no income, he has no prospects for ever having a meaningful income again. He has been destroyed. You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip.

You might not be able to squeeze blood out of a turnip, but you can empty Steve Powell's bank account. Those girls deserve every penny he has, or ever will have.

Just when I though my opinion of this despicable person could not get any lower.

"You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip."

I sure hope they try. The girls deserve it.

I understand he's sick and wrong and evil. However, I don't understand why money comes into play for a situation like this. Did he cause some financial difficulty for the girls? How could money help rectify his wrong?

I haven't followed this case extremely closely so please shed some light if you know more than I do about the case.

I agree with Kinderly. The guy is despicable and I have no sympathy with him, but I don't really see how these girls were financially damaged. They didn't even know their pictures had been taken. I don't feel one bit sorry for him, though. He has destroyed a lot of lives with his selfishness and perversionj. This is what happens to families when someone gets involved with pornography. It just goes from there.

The purposes of financial punishment are many, including these any many more:
1. He will never be able to afford a camera, computer, or pornography again. This punishment will make sure he thinks often about how he affected the lives of so many innocents. It may help him think about spending his money to feed, clothe, and shelter himself; which is what he should have been doing all along.
2. The girls and their mother could require therapy for an untold number of years, even their entire lives. Steven Powell will have to pay for all therapy forever.
3. The taxpayers paid fortunes for court costs. This may recoup some of that.
4. Steven Powell will remain destitute the rest of his life, which is more than he deserves.
5. The girls will eventually know how they were violated if they do not know now. Punishment helps them feel a sense of justice exists in the world. No financial punishment would not help them see justice.

I'd be willing to bet that the judge will not set aside judgment as to liability, but will set it aside as to the amount of the judgment, and require the plaintiffs to prove the amount of damages.

Powell is disturbed and wretched. And the mother of these girls is an opportunist. No one to respect on either side.

Like son, like father. If he doesn't respond or comment or answer to charges, he must believe he won't be accountable. His son must have learned to be "mum" from him.

I just want to know what this story has to do with UTAH?

@Kinderly the reason for the high costs is the girls will need therapy for many many years, which is incredibly expensive. It also covers their court/attorney fees. @LDS Liberal I think it is because the Powell family at some point were from Utah? But I'm not sure to be honest. I think it's just a big story that garners a lot of attention.

Where the heck would this guy get $1.8 million??

I guess what this judgement really says is... the victims can take everything he has (up to $1.8 million).

Man it would suck to be him!
