Protecting This House, I partially agree with you. Erickson needs to spend maybe
an entire day preparing 4th quarter game plans for any scenario. Chow's
offense had its problems (mostly injury and depth-related), but one thing he was
great at was keeping the offense creative even when the other team knew John
White IV was getting the ball on every play. If I'm not mistaken, White led
the nation in 4th quarter rushing that year. Yes, Whitt may be the guy that says
when to go into the 4 minute offense, and he's not necessarily wrong in
doing so, but Erickson and Johnson are still the ones who determine what that 4
minute offense is, and it hasn't worked.
Only one problem with DE as head coach.......He will not be here next year. He
will not go down with the ship.
Love Coach Whit. But hate to admit it: every fan I spoke with over the weekend
mentioned possibly moving Erickson to HC, and Whit to Co-Defensive Coordinator
(Sitake is doing a great job). Let the offense be offensive minded, and the
defense remain the dominant force that they've been for several years now.
Wilson clearly has talent. He just needs to have the playbook opened a little
more for him (ala Wisconsin's Joel Stave). Hate watching a fourth quarter
lead squandered because it seems Coach Whit reverted to 'playing not to
lose,' instead of playing to win.
Holding a team like this to 20 points should be more than enough to win this
game. It's all on the offense, with Wilson carrying a significant load
of that blame.Utah would be crazy to get rid of Whittingham.Patience. Within a year or 2 you'll have a great offense to compliment
that great defense.
...if all the Utes have left are moral victories? I guess that's all a
team with a losing record has to hold on to?
Ken, I'm sorry I think you're absolutely wrong. This is on the coach.
It's McBride all over again. The players have showed they have the talent
to compete. The coach unfortunately has shown that he can't compete at
this level. We've been close because of the players. Who have
we beaten? Utah State, BYU, Weber..following the trend here. Pure
unadulterated luck prevented a loss to Stanford. Look at Stanford.
Horrible loss to Utah and they re-group and beat Oregon. Actually held on to a
lead. That's what well coached teams do.
Utah's defense was the ONLY positive in this game. Some of
Utah's games this season remind me of some of BYU's games last season.
The defense playing the best football they can while offense self-destructs time
and time again.
@EdGradyThe defense couldn't have played any better really! AZ St. Is
a great offense, and Utah held them to 20 points. It's hard to stay
consistent on D when your offense goes 3 and out pretty much the entire 4th
quarter, defense barley got a rest! Cut them some slack this time.
Ifel Of'a-sofa"Whitt and Wilson are the new Bronco and
Riley"No they're not. Bronco and Riley went to bowl games.
The Utah defense blew a 12-point lead in the 4th quarter, and Whittingham talks
them up like they were the '85 Bears.
Whitt and Wilson are the new Bronco and Riley
Spin it how you want, all that matters is the W/L column. ASU is #1 in the
South. Utah is almost tied for last. Just hang tight and wait until Utah plays
their "rival" in Colorado. Since it's at RES, Utah will lose that
Offense lost this one! Defense played great!
The defense held a team that averages nearly 50 to 20 points. That's
phenomenal. This year has been filled with close losses, but the last thing we
need is a new coach. If Whittingham is putting the team in a position to beat
ranked ASU, ranked Oregon State, ranked UCLA in the last minute, that's on
the players. Not the coach. And add a HUGE Stanford win, Whittingham is the BEST
thing about this program. Recruiting has still been improving the last year or
two. The players will start making these plays. Whittingham is the man for the
job, I'm behind him fully
