Utah football: Utes looking to pick up the pace on picks

Here's a thought: despite 15 picks in 4 PAC-12 games, the Utes have had legitimate shots at coming out with a victory in every game except the SC no-show.

Maddening to think that had they given up 7 or even 8 picks in 4 games, the Utes could easily have been 8-0, or 7-1 at this point.

The refining process has been both exciting and devastating. All letdowns aside, I like the direction the Utes are headed.

    Solomon Levi,

If playing in any given bowl and a decent record were the objectives for Utah, we'd go independent and just schedule byu 12 times a year.

But some teams like to have a meaningful season and not have their quest for anything significant end after 1 game(like you did with Virginia)

    LOL

Number of bowl wins BYU has in the last 4 years: FOUR
Number of bowl wins Utah has in the last 4 years: TWO

Chances to play in a bowl this year:
    BYU: 100%
Utah: less than 50% (even with a 6-6 record, there's no guarantee)

Despite your frantic attempt to claim otherwise, head-to-head results are meaningless when predicting results versus common opponents.

Stanford lost to Utah, but beat Oregon State and UCLA.

Utah beat Stanford, but lost to Oregon State and UCLA.

    See the correlation?

    That's right, there isn't any.

With a story headline like that what do you poor oversensitive Ute fans expect?

The question has been asked, "First, if you have no need to compare yourself against Utah, why are you here on a Ute thread?"

    U90, here's my unsolicited reply...

Because it's fun to yank Ute fans and I'm not comparing anything.

You do recall the circumstances that BYU's current QB ended his season on the most idiotic call of all times and the subsequent roasting of the coaches etc. and predicted continued ineptness of that and Taysom's long and questionable road to recovery and predicted averageness this season? You do remember all of this correct?

So pardon me for saying that our QB has now risen from the ashes of those that burned him and the BYU coaches since that time and is currently smoking your QB.

Yeah, a headline about the poor Ute picks might garner a few comments.

I'm watching more and more PAC 10 football. I'm liking most of the teams, even the Buffs.

    Go Sun Devils!

With byu's inability to beat Utah, and Utah's inability to beat most pac 12 teams(other than top 10 powerhouse otherwise undefeated Stanford), it begs the question: Would byu win a single game if we invited them(We wont) to the Pac 12?

    @ U90
FYI the SOS rankings include the teams from the whole years schedule i.e. Oregon, ASU, WSU, and Colorado are already figured into that number. Most likely the Utes schedule will stay the same unless Utah's opponents begin losing games.

  • BeSmart Cheyenne, WY
    Nov. 4, 2013 2:30 p.m.

    @U90
I am sorry but your argument of a MUCH tougher schedule is not as legit as you say.
ESPN has BYU at #12 SOS ahead of almost all the power conference teams
Utah is #2 SOS which I think is awesome.
But against the #12 schedule to have a record of 6-2 is pretty awesome for a "mid-major"
Utah's 4-4 record I think is really respectable. If they win 3 out of the next 4 then I think it will be a successful season. 6-6 would be respectful but the way the bowl season is shaking out may not get Utah into a bowl game (if they make 6 wins I hope they make a bowl).
I will add this because it is my and the experts opinion BYU is the better team this year (yes I know that Utah beat BYU), but the Utes have sadly regressed to a poor team (I think they can improve and be good again).
BYU has steadily improved to become a good team on the fringe of a top-25 ranking. (yes they had two losses but that was a long time ago)

@ Truth "Losing a couple of early season games to lesser teams isn't even close to as embarrassing as finishing with a losing record and no bowl for the 2nd straight year"

First of all I didn't know Utah was out of the bowl picture at 4-4 with 4 games to go. Second, how do you figure Utah is a lesser team vs. BYU when the Cougars have lost to them 4 years in a row?

Truth, do you even consider the schedule BYU played last year becoming bowl eligible by beating an assortment of rag tag teams yet losing to Utah once again. Do you also consider Utah's #3 schedule which will be the #1 schedule a week from Saturday? You have nothing to support BYU is the better team other than your dreams.

"Can't" is a gross overstatement. If "can't" is defined as losing four in a row, then the Utes might as well not even bother showing up for the Arizona State game on Saturday, since the Sun Devils have beaten the Utes NINE times in a row (since 1977, when ASU was still in the WAC), including two blowout wins since the Utes joined the PAC 12.

Eight of first ten comments by BYU fans. The infatuation with Utah continues.

Tators, Utah is 4-4 with a MUCH tougher schedule than BYU. If BYU was the better team why didn't the great Van Noy, Hoffman and Hill pull out the W on their home field against the Utes? Do you think Utah's #3 SOS has anything to do with their 4-4 record vs. BYUs 6-6 record?

Number of bowl games last 10 years: BYU 8, Utah 9

BCS Bowl Wins: BYU 0, Utah 2

"Why are we always comparing Utah vs. BYU."

Because BYU is the standard against which everything Utah does must be compared before it can be considered an accomplishment - see Little Brother Syndrome.

By definition, Utah can't move on without abandoning all hope of ever accomplishing anything ever again.

  • theoldfatguy Magna, UT
    Nov. 4, 2013 1:41 p.m.

The biggest problem I see is a definite lack of talent in some key areas (Defensive backfield being one of them). Other PAC-12 teams have defenders - with size and speed - who are covering opposing receivers and can make plays on the ball. Getting near the ball will give them a better chance at an interception. Ute D-backs are usually getting beat off the line in press coverage and either run into each other or seem lost when trying to play zone converage. Even in Nickel and Dime packages, there are often huge holes. Each game there are huge blown coverages that results in a big play for our opponents.

We could get by with 5-foot 9-inch corners that are sloppy tacklers in the Mountain West, but it won't cut it in the PAC-12.

Unfortunately for U, despite your desperate, cherry-picked stats and spin, the rest of the country isn't nearly as impressed with U, as U are.

    Current Rankings:

BCS, AP, Coaches, Harris, Sagarin, CPU Avg, CBSSports, ESPN Power, Composite(105 rankings)

    BYU(6-2) 27, 28, 29, 21, 19, 21, 26, 27, 19
    Utah(4-4) 45, ur, ur, ur, 65, 44, 45, ur, 39

    Bottom line:

BYU has a better record AND is ranked an average of 20 places HIGHER than the Utes.

BYU has already secured a berth in the Fight Hunger Bowl, and still has an outside shot at a BCS bowl.

Utah is desperately clinging to an outside shot at qualifying for the New Mexico Bowl, or worse.

    Tators,

So since you're claiming byu beat BCS bowl participants(in the years they WERENT bcs bowl participants), should Utah be bragging about being the best team in the nation since we beat Alabama a few years ago and they're the now two time reigning national champion?

    LOL!

    Here is a clue:

Beating a BCS bowl participant IN THE YEAR they are a BCS bowl participant is better than beating such team in a down year when they aren't a BCS Bowl participant.

    LOL

    Nice spin though.

  • Chris B Salt Lake City, UT
    Nov. 4, 2013 12:46 p.m.

    Tators,

    LOL!

Kyle beat two BCS Bowl partipants IN THE YEAR they were BCS Bowl teams.

    LOL!

    Nice spin though.

Alabama was a BCS bowl participant WHEN we beat them.

Stanford will likely be a BCS Bowl team this year, meaning we beat them IN THE YEAR they were a BCS bowl team.

Number of times Bronco has beaten a BCS bowl team in the year they went to the BCS Bowl?

    Zero!

In other words, how many end of season top 10 ranked teams has Bronco beaten?

    ZERO!

Kyle already has 1, and likely Stanford as another.

Isn't it funny your coach talks of winning national titles, and yet he's NEVER beaten an end of season top 10 team?

How embarrassing to be beating your chest about an interception coming on a desperation heave on the final play of the game.

Houston, Texas, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech could all end up in BCS bowls this year. Two of those teams control their destiny (Houston and Texas) just needing to win out. The others have a little harder time getting there.

We need to hear from Chris B about this... in order to put an entirely new, unthought of spin on the issue. A spin that tells us the Utes are always great no matter what. After all, they do belong to a prestigious conference.

    Well said STGtoSLC,

We aren't very good this year, other than our top 10 win against Stanford, who will likely END the season in the top 10. And yet, we still managed to beat our two WAC brothers byu and usu.

And I'll point out its also likely Stanford will go to a BCS bowl, which means Whittingham will have beaten TWO BCS bowl participants(Alabama, Stanford).
