SLCWatch"As opposed to your team that did not get lucky?"BYU IS my team...What are you going on about?
So, we are awarding syle points now in football? Win is a win is a win is a
win.C+? Any win is at least a B.We gonna start giving
grades for the best use of pink accessories next?
happy_dadAnd Virginia'a wins are byu and a Division II team.Virginia has lost to Ball State an Duke.Utah's loss to
Arizona doesn't touch the byu's loss to Virginia.
How can BYU grade lower in a win against a solid Houston than Utah's loss
against a mediocre Arizona. (Arizona's wins are Norther Arizona, UNLV,
UTSA and Utah. Nice company.) (btw, UTSA is Texas - San Antonio if you were
wondering.) Was this a mulligan game?
We all get tired of different things Vlad... For instance I don't like
reading pollyanna posts that proclaim all is wonderful simply because our team
wins... We won, yes, but it wasn't pretty... We had some great
stats and some not so great stats, but there were a ton of errors that many of
us believe need to be cleaned up or the next few weeks will be some very rough
sledding against some very tough competition... I have always
thought that the purpose of opinion boards was to state your opinion on a story
or an event that the same group of readers are seeing or hearing so you can
discuss it if you like... I personally like reading other people's opinions
who see the same thing but only from different angles... Especially from those
that are different than my own... Some, like yourself, don't
like to do that... So, if I were you I simply wouldn't read those that
upset you. In fact, I don't read the pollyanna stuff unless something pops
out at me, like the word "whiner"...
@VladhagenHere, Here, good show!!!I agree totally.Must be an
awful lot of old geezers on here who remember days of yore (including me).But we weren't perfect back then any more than our memories are perfect
Win or Loose, I tried to give my two cents worth of report card for the cougs.
I quit doing that a while back since I'm an ACC (Arm Chair Coach). I
realized mine don't matter LOL!Go Cougs. You're one win
away from bowl eligibility.
A win by one point is the equivalent of two melatonan pills. I slept sooo good
I have to wonder why there are still naysayers here. What you just witnessed is
what we call a win. End it there. Are these BYU "fans" so myopic that
they think BYU is some sort of Alabama defense mixed with Oregon offense? Your
QB threw 4 TDs, ran for 100+ yards, and WON the game! Leave it at that. I get
really tired of these whiners that constantly think BYU should be scoring 70
points a game with no turnovers, injuries, or points allowed.
Now, having read the article, I disagree with Brandon. He should have listened
to the Post game show where things were explained by coaches who actually knew
what was going on. Offense:Given man to man in the first half the
offense killed Houston. Gave up one touchdown on a bad pass but other wise did
great. Second half, lost Jamaal, had zone coverage and Houston went lights out
on the pass rush. They changed we didn't.Defense: Shutdown
Houston in the first half except for a "push off touchdown" that
everyone in the nation saw except the 8 guys and 1 gal standing next to it. The
defense took three interceptions from a QB that had 11 tds and only one
interception in 5 games. They collected a field wide fumble that the referees
couldn't see but video did. (Was this a PAC 12 crew?) Special
teams: There was only the one kickoff failure. They kicked it out of the endzone
on all but two kicks and Hine took one of those 47 yards. They had a Lee Johnson
worthy punter and good coverage so only one return could be attempted.Coaches: Won itOh, and Houston is good.
Messy victory, but I'll take it. This week will be the test of how good
this team really is.
@YaskYAs opposed to your team that did not get lucky?
BYU got lucky.
CentralUtah"I give BYU an F for uniform originality. First they

BYU gets an overall "C+" for a win; while Utah gets the same overall
grade for a loss?DN graders need to re-evaluate their grading scale.

I agree majmajor. The defense is not responsible for 16 of the 46 Houston
points.I would even push their grade up a little higher to a B-
because that first score was from a push off. Was I the only one that saw
that?????????? However, it was the call on the field so it is what it is.You can't give the defense a lower grade than the special teams.
They got scored on and never had a put return. The defense got schooled a bit
but I'd keep their grade at a B- because you do get credit for clutch play.
Especially that last 3 & out that gave the offense a change to have a clutch
game winning drive. Great game for the Blue Cougs. They are headed
in the right direction.Blue Jay
Taysom Hill pulls out a Payton Manning style win. No one left early. Considering
the win and the post game interviews, BYU has some impressive young men
Third quarter the same tonight as it was against Georgia Tech-offensive
marshmallows. "Escape" with a win is a good description.
They nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Anyone know why Williams didn't play in the second half?
To be fair, BYU's defense didn't give up 16 of Houston's
points... BYU's Offense gave up 9 and Special Teams gave up 7...
Furthermore, Hill threw a pick in Houston's end zone that cost us another
likely 7 points... All in, we should have won this game by 24...I
believe it was actually one of the worst all around games that we played this
year (on par with Utah and Virginia)... I still think that Hill has
got to fix his touch passing skills and Anae, needs to get some other ideas on
potential plays to run...Our Offensive Line play was horrible, Our
Receiver play was great, and our play selection in the rungame was weak... The
only time that we ran outside the tackles was when Hill took off or when we
tried for the 2 point conversion with our FB (not a HB)...Our
Defensive pass coverage was exposed and we got burned on a handful of big
plays...In My Book:Offense B (O-line D, Receivers A,
Play Selection C-, QB B)...Defense C (D-line C+, LBs B-, Pass
Coverage C-)...Coaches C (Defense adjusted so DC B, OC C-, Special
Generally uninspiring defense and special teams. Little intensity there. They
gotta find a new gear or someone with speed is going to eat their corners'
lunch all day. Houston was not all that impressive to me, but they made
several gamer plays that counted.
rushfar,Brandon called it. Maybe it shouldn't have been an
easy win, but it shouldn't have been a one point win secured with a
interception in the last minute of the game.BYU had nearly double
the first downs and 200 more offensive yards than Houston and they only walked
away with a one point win?Houston is a decent team, but they
aren't great. They came into this game 5-0. One of those wins was over an
FCS team. Of the remaining 4 teams they beat, at this point in the season, only
one of those teams, Rice, has a winning record. The other 3 teams are
terrible.BYU needs to be more consistent throughout the WHOLE game.
If they can't, then the next few weeks against teams like Boise St.,
Wisconsin, and Notre Dame are going to be the most painful stretch of the
It was a fun game to watch. I disagree (a little) with the grading of the
defense and special teams:Defense:C+ - 16 points were not the
defenses fault (Return, pick-6, and safety). The defense shut out Houston the
whole second half. They were successful when it mattered, and a C- defense
couldn't have held Houston to a 3-and-out at the end of the game. A C-
defense would have been on their back asking for O2 at the end of that game.Special Teams:C+ - You never even mentioned that BYU was the only
team to make a field goal (with the same number of attempts). Offensive line:C+ - They won 80% of the battles. They are much better
then last year. I hope the improvement continues.Good luck Cougs!
Great game for Taysom, who continues to improve each game: 29 of 44 (66%),
417 yards, 4 TDs, 3 ints, 161.9 pass eff rating, 128 yds rushingClean up those interceptions, and it would have been a fantastic game. When the pressure was on and BYU down 41-46 with 1:50 left in the game,
Taysom delivered a 52-yard game-winning touchdown drive.
I have to agree with Brandon's assessment. Spot on on all accounts!
No way should BYU have beaten Houston "easily." That's a good team,
quick, strong and had a highly ranked defense. They should have
beaten them, yes, but I'm entirely comfortable with this win just the way
it played out. Every few years "freaky" things happen and the opposing
team scores on plays they shouldn't have. The long early TD was because the
defender tripped. the 3rd and 22 TD pass was a bad throw and how often do you
see a player cut across the field like that to score? On a normal
day, Houston scores 21-24 points. This happened against Tulsa a few years ago
and we lost. I'm a happy camper ....
