That is to simple a solution. No budget for five years, out of control spending for five years. This cannot be blamed on Bush, this is all the Democrats.

No question that we're living in some historic times -- comparable to the significant conservative opposition to the anti-slavery movement, women's right to vote, civil rights, etc.

What we have today is a conservative movement that opposes the ability of all Americans access to affordable healthcare. ObamaCare will be recorded in America's history as on par with civil rights and women's movement. And once again, conservatives will be recorded as having been on the wrong side of history.

I was re-reading about the anti-slavery movement and how many conservatives in the mid-1800s opposed the freeing of the slaves because of the "economic havoc" it would cause. Plantation owners invested into their slaves -- property -- and to take it away on the moral grounds that "all men are created equal" was too bitter a pill for conservatives. Conservatives viewed the white man as superior, and that slavery was simply the natural order.

I couldn't help but see the parallels of today's conservatives with ObamaCare -- their beliefs that the "haves versus have-nots" is simply the natural order of today's 21st century society. And they shut down the government to preserve it.

@Baron Scarpia,

Lincoln was a Republican. The Southern Democrats wanted to take their "ball" and leave the Union. The Northern Democrats joined with the Republicans. The Southern Democrats believed that they had the right to take away a man's freedom and force him to work for them, in other words, they believed then, just as Reid and Obama believe today, that men should be forced against their will to labor all their days for the pleasure of those who "rule and reign" over them. It was the Democrats who owned the slaves. The Republicans in the North did everything in their power to give every man, woman and child the opportunity to prosper from their own efforts. The Southern Democrats believed differently.

Democrats have made over forty million Americans dependent on the Government. The "government" feeds them, clothes them and houses them. The White House teaches them to envy the wealth of those who work and to demand that that wealth be stripped from those who produce.

No man has the right to force another man to work against his will to provide personal welfare to another. Obama and Reid think otherwise, regardless of Reid's "historic overstatement".

I suppose Lincoln would have been all for a government shutdown promoted by the Republicans of 2013.

Ignore the R's and D's J,

Lincoln was a Progressive Liberal.
And the South is today's uber-con Tea-Party Today.

Now -as for history.
Who got it right, and who got it wrong?
