Nice article, and no specific mention of favorite son Mike Lee.

Do you think if one of the "player" politicians had a family business in Springdale, or outside of the Grand Canyon or Yosemite that the shutdown would be/would have been handled differently?

Why do Obama and his Democrat pals like Harry Reid want to hurt small businesses by refusing to accept the numerous bills already passed by the Republican House which would have prevented, or now, end the shutdown?

As bad as the damage is now to these hard working business owners and their equally hard working employees, the long term damage to their livelihood, savings and future well-being will be infinitely more damaged it Obamacare is fully implemented.

Or, especially if our addiction to spending is not curbed so we can not only eliminate deficits, but actually pay off the $17 trillion debt politicians have run up, mostly to buy votes.

Stand firm, and as hard as it is, work to get the Democrats to understand basic economics, a subject usually ignored by community organizers and slick politicians.

Why doesn't the House even hold a vote on the Senate bill that funds everything that they've sent? At least the Senate holds votes on the House versions, why won't the House have a vote? They scared it'd pass and fund the government?

According to Jay Evensen of the D-News, nobody is effected by this...oh well.

What if we consider placing these parks under the control of the people that derive financial benefit from their proximity to them? Utah has an excellent state parks program that could be expanded. This would allow the people with the greatest interest in the parks (the neighboring residents and business owners) to ensure that the parks remain enjoyable, welcoming, and OPEN!

If you think some of these towns have it tough, what about our disabled veterans. I'm 100% Permanent & Total disabled military veteran. Veterans have been told that the government will run out of money by 17 October. They said not to be surprised if we don't get our disability check at the end of October. How are we going to survive on nothing? Isn't that nice of Congress. However, they are still getting paid.

I heard the same thing reported on fox news...except it went something like this...

Why do koch and his unelected republican pals like demint, norquist or their highly compensated employees like cruz, lee, boehner and mcconnell want to abrogate the rule of law?

As bad as the damage is now to hard working Americans and their equally hard working employees, the long term damage to their livelihood, savings and future well-being will be infinitely more damaged if koch and his unelected republican pals like demint, norquist or their highly compensated employees like cruz, lee, boehner and mcConnell continue to abrogate the rule of law.

Or, especially if our addiction to reagonomics is not curbed so we can not only eliminate deficits, but actually pay off the $17 trillion debt republican politicians have run up, mostly to buy votes. (Americans will always remember the sage advice... the cheney/reagan inspired republican mantra that "...deficits don't matter...".)

RobDH,

I already got my VA Disability this month (60% from Iraq). I am worried about November 1st though. That check is the mortgage payment...

Solutions not Stones,

So are those neighboring business owners going to maintain the roads, clean the bathrooms, make sure all the trails are safe, empty the garbage cans in the campgrounds, patrol the parking lots?

Maybe Springdale residents will rethink voting for Mike Lee.

I think we have a new paradigm in government.

No need to propose bills for voting or debate. We can just wait until debt ceiling talks and they fight tooth and nail to get what we want. That, or shut the country down.

Want to stop abortion? Withhold funding until it is outlawed.
Want prayer in school? Shut the government down until you get it.
Think taxes are too high? Fix it during debt ceiling talks.

Is that how you think it should run all the time, or it is only justified to get what YOU want?

The issue here is much bigger than the ACA. It is precedent to the workings of our government.

Does anyone really think this is the way our founding fathers envisioned things happening?

Amen JoeBlow. That's what upsets me most about this, they can't get what they want through the proper channels, so the GOP is holding the entire government for ransom until they get what they want. I don't care if you agree or disagree with Obamacare, this is NOT how the government is supposed to work.

At the same time our president refuses to even think about compromising with them. I"m not sure who I hate more and I think the blame is spread around pretty evenly.

atl134,

I think you have it wrong, the House has passed several bills to fund the government, with a provision to delay Obamacare, as well as more bills to fund certain parts of the government. It is Harry Reed who tables the bills as soon as they get to the Senate and will not allow floor debate or a vote on the bills.
