"Obamacare" is the problem, not the government shutdown. Mike Richards
is correct. We need to look to the real problem, not blame those who are trying
to get us to see Obamacare for what it is, a monumental disaster.
@ Grandma Barb:The community as a whole is represented by
government. And in social programs the distribution and exchange of goods is
definitely regulated by the government (which represents the community). So even
according to your definition, social programs are at indeed socialistic. Taking money from some people (the taxpayers) and redistributing to
others (social program recipients) is indeed a tenet of socialism. Therefore,
these programs are socialistic in nature. I'm not saying some of these
programs aren't doing some good. But by definition, facts are facts. Stalin
and Marx used bleeding heart arguments to sell their forms of government too.
Don't be naive. It's actually you who needs to wake up and
finally realize that it was Tea-Party type people who established this country
in the first place and consequently established it into the great country it is.
Now these same-type principled people want to save this country from the
diluting effects of Obama and his ultra-liberal agenda. They want us to live
within our means. Obama has us on the brink of national bankruptcy with total
out-of-control deficit spending. Obamacare will only make things that much
We also need to look at this as what happens when you rely on a distant
unelected bureaucracy for local need. A bureaucrat will give up his life but not
his job. Money shouldn't have to go to Washington where the bureaucrats
take their cut first and parcel out what is left back to the country side. DC and its environs have not suffered a recession/depression. They are living
high on the hog while sucking the life blood out of the rest of the country. It is sad that these people will not get aid for the time of the furlough. It
will be sadder if the Central/Federal government fails entirely. Central
planning has never worked, not in Rome, not in the USSR, and probably soon not
in the USA.
To "Grandma Barb" lets look at what the policies of just the past 10
years of liberalism have done. You say that "Well fed, healthy,
well educated people are more likely to create a strong middle class, who pay
more taxes and will make this country stronger." At the same time a
populace that is dependent on the government for the food, housing, and jobs
will result in a weak and small middleclass.Lets just look at some
recent headlines, so we can see the result of liberal policies (Bush started
many of them, and Obama has made them bigger)."Median Income
Falls For 5th Year, Inequality At Record High" Huffington Post. Income is
falling the longer Obama "fixes" the economy."Middle
class shrinks to an all-time low" Washington Post. If just feeding and
educating them was all that mattered, we should have a growing middleclass. As CNS pointed out "Record Number of Households on Food Stamps-- 1
out of Every 5" we are feeding them, but the middleclass is shrinking as
people depend on government assistance to eat.The problem isn't
not having enough government programs, but having too many.
Some of the early comments to this article are nonsensical and totally without
merit. @ no fit in SG:It's your comment that doesn't
fit. Not one politician, Republican or Democrat has ever advocated shutting down
WIC or any other program to help the poor. They simply don't want them
abused. Sounds logical. @ rightascention: Yours is an
uninformed comment. I've been around a long time and have never once heard
any Congressman even insinuate, let along say that poor people and babies are
not important. WIC and such programs were established by both parties in
Congress because they are important. Read more and makeup less.@
There you go again:Yes... there you go again... speaking nonsense. Not a
single Republican has ever advocated (let alone promised) to shut down
government. They simply want to scale back government to reasonable levels in
order to better control the out-of-control deficits that will otherwise soon be
bankrupting our country. We have to learn to make outgo equal to income. And you
need to read more to learn real political facts before further embarrassing
yourself on these comment boards.
Awe the compassionate conservatives.Chris B says "Go get a job.
Or another job. It's not my job to take care of someone else's kids.
Its their job."3rd says: "It's really sad that after
ONE day of shutdown people are so unprepared that they need Obama's
handouts.Where are the family members of these people?Where are the
churches?"SoCalUte says: "The solution is to Remove any and
all dependence upon the government for our daily existence."Redshirt: "We are also giving out money to single mothers going to
college? Isn't their child important enough that they would do anything
they could for them?"CHS 85 nailed it. These are the same
anti-choice conservatives showing their support for mothers who chose to have
Darn it, social programs are NOT SOCIALISM. Not even close. noun:
socialism 1. a political and economic theory of social organization that
advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be
owned or regulated by the community as a whole. The social programs
that this country has embraced are not Socialism. None of them change the
ownership of anything to the people. Well fed, healthy, well educated people are
more likely to create a strong middle class, who pay more taxes and will make
this country stronger. When are you going to wake up and realize that
the Republican Tea Party does not care about the "people" in this
country. They care about themselves and the very rich people who are
manipulating them as the base of the GOP. WAKE UP!
WIC as fully funded by the Republicans. Obama and the Democrats are using those
mothers and those children as pawns. The Republicans are not to blame. They
funded all programs except for ObamaCare. All programs! If children go hungry,
call Obama and Harry Reid. Ask them why they took the food out of the mouths of
baby for their political purposes.
To "CHS 85" what vitriol is directed at babies? The only
complaints I have seen are towards irresponsible parents or people that use the
system so that they don't have to work as hard.Would you rather
they become dependant on the government for the rest of their lives? By giving
out welfare to people that are able bodied or people that choose to quit a good
paying job, we are just enabling them and thier children to think of the federal
government as a free ATM that will take care of them no matter what.
Wow. Such vitriol directed at babies who have NO say in how their situation is
the way it is. Pretty disgusting if you go back and read these comments. I
can't even believe these are being written by Utahns. More of
that "compassionate conservatism" we heard so much about from the past.
I guess you guys only care about babies before they are born.
Let me get this right. We are handing out tax payer funded food so that people
can quit good jobs and work for less money? We are also giving out
money to single mothers going to college? Where are the fathers, and why is it
that they have money for tuition and books but can't feed their child?
Isn't their child important enough that they would do anything they could
A relative went online to check out the Obama care health rates, for her it
would be over 1000.00 a month for 2/3 of the coverage she currently has through
her employer. Not a good deal at least in her case. Keep in mind, the repubs are
trying to level the playing field. by law Obama care should have started the
same time for businesses as for the public, Obama gave businesses 1 more year to
comply.by the way he doesn't have the legal authority to do that. It must
be through the legislator to change or modify laws.. Does that sound fair?
Repubs are only asking to delay Obama care for 1 year as well for everyone. But
the Dems have rejected 3 budgets that have been offered that would fully fund
the government minus the Obamacare for 1 year. Both parties share blame in this
Two thoughts: First, when Obama and the Democratically-controlled
congress rammed through Obamacare without a broad national consensus, what else
did they expect? A large cross section of America does not want it, and is
supporting the effort, by whatever means, to derail this trainwreck-of-a-law.
Obamacare is a case study on how a bloated, overreaching federal government is
in need of some serious reigning in. I say, let it stay shut down until we can
clean out the half of Washington that supports the Obamacare / tax and spend
mentality. Second, WIC is actually one of the few federal programs
that the conservatives can and should support. It uses minimal funding to
provide basic commodities to mothers and children, improving their health, and
actually cutting the amount of tax dollars that would otherwise be needed to pay
for much more expensive health care later on. It is carefully administered by
caring and concerned dietitians and other staffers who get to know their
clientele and ensure that the help truly goes to those who genuinely need it.
WIC is an excellent case study on how federal safety-net programs should be run:
Locally administered, requires personal interaction, and limited.
This is actually a good thing. In the history of the world, It has Never been
good for an individual or family to depend on the government for income help. It
is much better for us to be able to lean on friends and family for help. When one is dependent upon government for help, then one is also obligated to
play according to the rules that the government feels a need to establish.Result: More government control means steps toward communism. ie. Obamacare,
Isn't it a little communistic to say everyone Must have insurance, and if
you do not, you will be fined for not having insurance. What is next? Will we be
fined if we don't buy nutritious groceries for our family. Will we taxed
more if we don't work at the job that the government says we must work
at.The solution is to Remove any and all dependence upon the government
for our daily existence.
Our parents' generation somehow managed to get by without WIC. We are
supposedly more educated and have access to better technology. When our parents
were out of work they could not do a job search on the Internet. They could not
mass-text or mass-email their friends asking for help in finding a job or
dealing with the consequences of not having one. If our parents wanted to borrow
money to start a business it was much much more difficult and the interest rate
was much higher. Yet somehow with much less government help they solved their
problems. If they could do it, we can do it. Maybe if you do not know how to
solve your problems ask someone of your parent's generation who appears to
have some common sense in him.
This is what happens when people don't save their money and have no food
storage. It's going to be ugly when the whole system eventually collapses.
It's really sad that after ONE day of shutdown people are so unprepared
that they need Obama's handouts.Where are the family members of these
people?Where are the churches? My daughter was filling orders at the
storehouse in Naperville IL last night. There is no shutdown in effect there.Perhaps we have put our faith in the wrong institutions.Or perhaps we
have slammed the door shut too many times on family and God. We can't go
back home because we've burned the bridge.
Ya, life is tough. Deal with it.Go get a job. Or another job.
It's not my job to take care of someone else's kids. Its their job.
..."neither of them can be big boys and talk about it".QUOTEIt takes at least two to have a conversation. The
above quote reflects a rather popular view and sounds fair - but is it?As far as I know the Republicans are willing to talk but theDemocrats
need to join in the conversation.I'm not a partisan of either
party, I'm independent and sincerely sorry when anyonesuffers, but
much worse suffering will result if we do not do something tostop the
spending of trillions of money on this, largely undiscussed, unpopular
measure.Something needs to be done about Congress constantly raising
the debt ceiling.Something needs to be done with regard to a Congress that
repeatedly ignores the will and aspirations of its electorate.
No fit,Repubs voted to keep government open, dems voted to shut it down.
Remember this, Americayahoo,People who watch KSL are not going
to know much about anything other than how wonderful KLS’s talking heads
think KSL’s talking heads are.There you go2010 was a
referendum on obamacare, not to shut down government. please be honest.
I am tired of everyone passing the buck in Washington. We elected a President to
make the decisions and work with Congress. In my opinion, the buck stops at his
desk. You can make all the excuses in the world but the buck stops at his desk.
Congress is a joke at this point. In the real world, none of them would be
employed if they could not work through issues together.
repubs elected in 2010 and 2012 ran on the promise of shutting down
government. They have delivered. Now they need to go home
and get real jobs.
As I was watching KSL news about this shut down Doug Wright gave an observation
that most of us really don't know anything about the new Health Care Plan.
This in my opinion is what is causing the government shutdown. It is affecting
all of us in different ways. Is the shutdown necessary, don't know but
what we will find out later on is how effective ObamaCare really is. What I
hope comes from this government shutdown is citizens of the United States
actually look at what our government is actually doing and what they are
spending our money on. Also realize congress is still getting paid even though
they are shutdown. Do they as a whole care about the american people or their
political future in the house or senate?
Walmart has signs on the doors saying they can't provide WIC food because
of the shutdown.
In this case, the only people affected are poor people and their babies, so from
the Congressional viewpoint -- the damage is not in their long view important.
Right wing Republican Tea Party politicians have the goal to rid our country of
WIC and similar programs.Remember this America.
This is good reporting. People should see how Washington intransigence affects
real people. Best of luck to these young mothers.
