Aggie238, yes, but USC had all those same athletes, plus a few better ones like
TJ McDonald, last year, and they were a pretty underwhelming defense. I think
USU will probably win, but I think Keeton, like Wilson, will find it hard to run
against BYU (as it was against SC), and the pass rush will make him get rid of
the ball earlier than he'd like to as well.As far as what you
call USU's weakness, I was actually pleasantly surprised at how their
secondary stood up to SC's receiving corps. Kessler is a pretty smart
passer, and he looked a bit flustered at times in the game. I see another
defensive battle, but not as low of a final score as last year. Good luck, Ags!
StGtoSLC, Having watched both teams play, I have to tell you that
USC is more than a little bit better than BYU defensively. There isn't
even a comparison. KVN is a great player, and I hope that he goes far, but USC
has roster full of players of that caliber at every position on defense who are
bigger, faster, and stronger than the BYU counterparts. I was truly amazed at
the strength and speed of that defense. But even they couldn't keep us out
of the end zone the whole time. USU will not see another defense of that
caliber this year. BYU's defense is good enough to slow USU down some of
the time, but not good enough to stop it. I will grant you that Bronco usually
has a great defensive game plan, and runs a tight ship in that department, but
it's not anywhere near USC's level. Not only will BYU's defense
not good enough to stop Chuckie & Co, but the offense is just not going to
be able to keep up, especially since Hill is not capable of effectively
exploiting our one defensive weakness.
"Cougar linebacker Kyle Van Noy will end collegiate career without win
against Utah." He will just have to be consoled with his
upcoming multi-million dollar contract in the NFL. Some how I think he will
just be fine.
Wiscougarfan, there's a chance, my Northwoods neighbor. If BYU is bowl
eligible, they are automatically slated for the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, which
also has the sixth pick of bowl-eligible PAC-12 teams (seventh if the conference
receives an at-large BCS bowl invite). So if Utah wins at least 6 games, is not
conference champs (highly unlikely they would), and is not invited by either the
Alamo, Holiday, Sun, or Las Vegas bowls, then yes, they could meet BYU in San
Francisco. Best of luck from the Chippewa Valley!Aggie238, your
offensive line will have to protect Chuckie much better than they did in the
Coliseum if he wants to shred the Cougars' secondary. I know USC's
defense is legit, possibly a little better than BYU's, but blocking like
that will still get him beat up against BYU.
Not a BYU fan, but I kinda feel sorry for KVN and the BYU defense generally. I
mean, how would that feel to have a pretty darn good game, and then watch as
your offense, particularly your QB, wads it up and throws it away like an old
cheeseburger wrapper. And it's going to happen a few more times this
season. I actually was mildly pulling for BYU this time (usually I pull for
Utah in the Holy War) because if they had won it would preserve a shot at the
Beehive Boot for U-State. Incidentally, BYU ought to be very, very
concerned about Utah State. They will just follow Utah's blueprint and key
on the run, which they are already excellent at stopping, and force Hill to
throw over the defense, which we all know he can't do. Chuckie will shred
BYU's secondary all night long.
Isn't there a chance for a rematch if both teams are bowl eligible at the
end of the season?
Samurai Jake;Observations are different from being a sore loser.
Look at the last minute of the Wisconsin game when the refs ran of the field, as
an example.I find the cougs and utes pretty much equal. Offensive
yards favored BYU--not the final score. Not scoring from the three yard line
did them in. There was no domination here.
The PAC winning all the close games this week shows the superiority of the
As a BYU fan I will admit that Utah outplayed BYU. Utah is a very well coached
team and quite talented. I think it is kind of naive for people to say talent is
so much better on Utah's team. You look at the recruiting classes over the
last 10 years they average almost the same. Utah has a qb that I think will be
one of the best before he leaves. Utah outplayed BYU and won the game fair and
square. Dres Anderson and Poole made big plays and definitely helped win the
game. BYU play calling was not that bad receivers dropped passes and the qb
can't throw. Utah will probably have a great couple of years and BYU will
struggle with a poor passer. I hope Utah goes on to succeed, but I just want to
be realistic to both groups of fans. The teams and talent are pretty much even.
In the same conference BYU and Utah would be about the same. Congrats to the
Utes on the win, and here is to hoping the Cougars learn how to throw and catch,
and can become a better team.
To Tom, Worfie and all the others blaming the outcome of the game on the
"blatant" pass interference call. There is a new invention
just out, so I know many of you may not have had a chance to use it, but
it's called DVR. Really, Digital Video Recorder, it is amazing. You can actually record the game while it is being played, and then re-watch
it at a later time. But the best thing is, you can view any portion of the game
in slow motion. So, let's say you would like to watch what actually
happened on a particular play. For example, say there was a pass play at the end
of a certain game.DVR and/or slow-motion replay to the rescue. I know, it's
hard to fathom. With this new invention, you can play any portion of
a particular event over, and over, and over. You can even use the newly invented
slow motion option to get a fantastic look at what actually happened. It truly
is such an incredible idea. I hope it is here to stay. What will they think of
YES! A big win for my Utes. This is bigger than any bowl game but we will go
bowling. This is just the beginning. We will be playing in the PAC12
championship game and go on to be the National Champions. We will go
the rest of the season undefeated! Go Utes!!!
I see Utah beating AZ and CU. That means they need to beat one of these teams:
UCLA, Oregon, Stanford, USC, ASU or WAZZU. 5-7 is a real possibility. 6-6 best
case. I'm not sure that gets them in 6th place to play BYU in the Kraft
Hunger Bowl, that is if BYU can get bowl eligible itself. Some of these
"easy" games for the Cougs aren't going to be so easy unless HIll
and WR corp play better and/or Williams returns from injury. The Cougs need
five more wins and I'm not sure I'm seeing it for sure, I see 7-5 best
We were cheated again by the officials. That's 4 years in a row.
I am embarrassed for some of these BYU commenters, you are not helping your
"IMO--Utah will not do well in the PAC."worf:Because you have been so spectaculary wrong with all your opinions and
predictions I'm actually encouraged about the Utes' prospects this
season. Thanks again for your thoughtful analysis. Now, would you please find
Tators so he could do the same.
worf"Deceptive, corrupt politics. Hmm? Evenly matched teams all going
PAC 12 way."Corrupt politics? What in the world are you talking
about? As to your second assertion regarding evenly matched
teams...you do know the difference between fact and opinion, right?
Unless, of course, Utah is able to hold that 6th place spot in the PAC and
remain bowl eligible -- Kyle may have one more shot in the Kraft Hunger bowl....
"and how about the blatant pass interference on the last play of the game
that wasn't called?"I agree! It was clearly offensive pass
interference, you can't pull a defender on top of you while you're
trying to make a catch!
@ Tom in CA"Right Snookie - and how about the blatant pass
interference on the last play of the game that wasn't called?"If there was a pass interference call on the last play of the game. It would
have been called on the BYU receiver that grabbed the Utah corner's jersey
and pulled him down before he had a chance at the pick. Now that it's all
said and done. The refs called a good game! Admit it now Tom and no
more excuses! Utah was the better team last night! They got the job done!
@worf:Your comment about corrupt politics dictating the outcome of
those games is absurd. Not to mention extremely desperate. Try to be a
reasonable loser, not a sore one.
" ... Calling that penalty on Rowe was chicken those plays happened all game
from both sides .... "Right Snookie - and how about the blatant
pass interference on the last play of the game that wasn't called?
@ worfHere is a comment you posted on July 26th.Not sure
the utes will finish ahead of Colorado. After a beating from the Aggies,
and Cougars, there won't be much gas left in the tank.Care to
man up and admit you were wrong? The great thing about these posts is they are
in writing and people can look at your comments. You talk a lot of trash and
glad to see my team make you eat your words.
"Cougar linebacker Kyle Van Noy will end collegiate career without win
against Utah." How sad. KVN talked to the local media about his
"hate" for Utah and and Utah's "hate" for byu. He also
claimed that he returned for his senior year because he had "unfinished
business." I wonder what he was referring to...hmmmmmmmm. Oh, well.
Another year and another Utah win over byu.Can we get a sound bite
from JD Falslev, please.
Let the wise observe and understand. * BYU vs Utah* USC vs
Utah State* Arizona State vs Wisconsin* Utah vs Utah StateDeceptive, corrupt politics. Hmm? Evenly matched teams all going PAC 12
way.IMO--Utah will not do well in the PAC. Not because of less
talent, or coaching, but corrupt politics.
Hadley's absence had no bearing on the outcome. Beck actually had a very
good game as his replacement. I feel bad for Van Noy, but he'll be playing
on Sundays next year barring injury this year. The D played well
enough to win. Once again the offense didn't hold up their end. Red Zone
offense was pathetic! And I put most of the blame of that on the shoulders of
I feel heartbroken for KVN. Even though the stat line won't look amazing,
he had Wilson wrapped up at least 3-4 times and disrupted the offense for the
entire game. For a lesser quarterback at least two of those would have been
sacks. Unfortunately, Wilson isn't a lesser quarterback--he's the
real deal and certainly seems capable of bringing the Utes out of the PAC12
cellar. Go work Utes, you certainly have our number.
KVN decision to come back to complete his schooling was the right call. He is
setting a great example for kids with similar backgrounds. If Kyle can go to
BYU and complete his four year degree, then so can they.KVN played
spectacular last night. He'll get over this loss as will the rest of
Cougar nation. Next up is a big challenge athletically when Middle Tennessee
State comes to town. While many fans dismiss small schools, MTSU has a lot more
speed than either Utah or BYU has and could easily beat the Cougars. What MTSU
lacks is discipline. The Cougars need to rebound and move forward. The Utes need to get better as well. UCLA is a beast. They may have the best
passing QB in the PAC12. I thought his game against Nebraska was better than
Manziel's was against Alabama. Its fortunate Utah has a bye to heal and
prepare. Good luck to the Utes the rest of the way. Hope all Ute fans could
equally wish BYU the same.
You win. It was a good game. Congratulations on stepping up with a quality
win. Now sadly we shall not have this kind of great football again. Goodbye.
I'm a Cougar. Our offense isn't very good, especially without
Williams. Hill needs to share the ball. He's wasting Hoffman this year. Our
Defense is fine. But Utah always seems more collected in these games. They keep
their cool while BYU just plays catch up. "He gave us a chance to win,
that's all I can ask for." What? Most coaches ask for the win, not just
a chance to win. ugh.
When will Bronco finally compliment an opposing team he loses to, especially the
U. The U is a much more athletic team and since moving into the PAC 12 they are
undefeated and their depth and skill level is increasing. Bronco appears to be a
poor sport. "Evenly matched"... Tired of the excuses. Blechen is out yet
no one made an excuse for the U. Calling that penalty on Rowe was chicken those
plays happened all game from both sides. No more excuses. Be a fan and a good
sport. Nicely Done!!Go UTES!!
This was a great game for the Utes to show how far they've come with two
full Pac 12 recruiting classes under their belt. It will be interesting to see
the differences in each team again in two years as both teams go their seperate
ways in terms of how they recruit and how well each can stock the rosters.
Just as Peyton went winless against Florida. A worthy adversary, and I wish
nothing but good things for his future!
The BYU D should be disappointed. They gave up huge chunks of yardage all night
long. But BYU has to score more than 13 against its rival. This is a mental
thing and the fact that these guys failed to gear up for this game 4 years
running is totally pathetic.
I respect Van Noy's decision to come back to BYU for his senior year. I
don't know if I think it was a good decision, but Van Noy plays with a ton
of pride and skill and his desire to go out on top before he leaves BYU is
admirable. It hasn't worked out on the field for BYU but Van Noy is a guy
anybody would want as a teammate.
