Should be a good one. Never underestimate your opponent. Goes both ways. I'm a BYU fan but betting the U finds the right gears, while BYU pops the clutch a few too many times as they grow into their offense and struggle learn how to complete more than 50% of their passes.

The Holy War means alot to the Alum of both schools. But in the bigger picture, since they are not in the same confr. there isnt as much riding on it. Utah needs wins from any source to stay relevant in the PAC 12.

This could be a defining year for Utah!

Let's see. The only thing YBU fans can say is that Utah hasn't won many games in the PAC while due to their "independent" scheduling they can schedule sweet games like Middle Tennessee and Idaho St. with a bye week before they meet Utah. Nice. Oh, . . . nice win against #25 Texas. What is their ranking now? ha-ha-ha-ha You better make sure you beat Utah this week because if you don't all of your blather makes the TDS look even more pathetic.

Utah will hold your inept offense to under 200 yards. Last year we had the worst offense ever and scored 24 points against your defense, this years offense is much better and will score more points.

    "The NINE conference games."

Which of course explains why Utah fans don't talk about any opponent besides BYU 99.9% of the time.

Utah fans talk a good party line, but the truth is, until the Utes get good enough to actually compete for a PAC conference title, it's all just talk.

Expounding on Big Cougar's one trick pony narrative; the Utes have been a one trick pony of a program since they joined the WAC in 1962. Occassionally good enough to beat BYU, but seldom good enough to win a conference championship.

Were it not for the OOC games your poor little struggling football team would not have played for 8th place in 2011.

Were it not for USU you would have been bowling last year.

Please don't insult my (our) intelligence by being less than honest about Ute reality and non-conference games.

In state bragging rights is all U have with the steady conference beatdowns on the horizon.

Utah and Kyle's problems with not winning consistently in the Pac12 is due to Kyle's being a one trick pony as a coach. He was good as a MWC head coach in getting the utes up emotionally for 1 or 2 big games a year plus rivalry games against conference and in-state teams. Kyle was good at giving his teams an "edge" or a chip on their shoulder that provided them extra motivation to gut out tough wins.

Playing in the MWC afforded the utes and Kyle a boatload of cupcake games vs teams like New Mexico, UNLV, Wyoming, etc to mix around the occasional big game so they could recover. Kyle was very good with this format.

Now in the Pac12, Kyle hasn't been able to figure out how to get the utes to play tough every week. They have long stretches with letdowns, defensively failings, offensive failings, and a noticeable lack of energy.

Can he change his approach and still be successful? Is this exposing him to be a good MWC head coach but not a good Pac12 head coach? Will Dennis Erickson be the guy going forward?

  • BigCougar Bountiful, UT
    Sept. 16, 2013 2:46 a.m.

What the utes don't know is how to beat BYU without the emotional effort it takes causing them to go flat emotionally for the next month. Since joining the Pac12 Utah is 0-7 in conference play in the month following the "BYU Bowl".

In the past Utah had the luxury of playing BYU in the last game of the season so they could get worked up emotionally and go all out and then have a month to recover and refocus for their bowl game.

Now the challenge is to re-teach Utah how to play BYU. Their "edge" in the past has always been their ability to get all worked up and play with intense emotions. That has cost them the past 2 seasons to go 0-7 vs Pac12 competition (and lets face it, they haven't been playing the best Pac12 teams either).

Can Utah still be competitive vs BYU and stop making it an emotional affair? I don't think they can.

BYU is NOT the most important game on Utah's schedule. Let me inform you of something! Conference games are always MORE IMPORTANT than non conference games. Utah has 9 games more important than BYU. Depending on the outcome of those conference games will determine which bowl game we go to. All the BYU game does is give us instate bragging rights when we win. That's it!

I suggest you fix your machine, the truth part is broken!

Tell us what Ute fans really want and then give us a realistic prediction of what Ute fans will get this year and be happy with.

To me it's looking like Ute fans will have to be happy with a lot of losses and if that's the case then beating BYU is the only thing that has any joy to a sad bunch of Pac losers. Am I getting close to understanding Ute mentality?

I'm dying to hear your take on this and just so you know...

Reading these comments brings back the rivalry feelings I had when Utah and BYU were both in the same conference. I realize that it isn't quite the same to me because the game doesn't have conference standing implications anymore. I miss those days and the Holy War has been one of the best in the nation.

All 12 games are very important to both teams. BYU's 12 game schedule is basically all conference games. Utah has 9 conference games that matter most. Certainly the instate games are important but they aren't conference games. After losing to USU last year, that non conference game to me was more important that the BYU game. Bottom line, the BYU game is 10th or 11th most important game to Utah.

Sure I'd like to see Utah beat BYU for bragging rights, but given the choice of winning either the BYU game or the next game against UCLA, I'd most definitely choose the UCLA game as would all Utah fans.

For those that think Utah gets up for this game more than BYU, that's absolutely absurd! This is a non conference game for Utah.

    Go Utes!

I find it amusing that the BYU game, according to Mr. Rock, doesn't mean as much as the Oregon State game. So is that saying that the Utes lost the important game so the other game doesn't matter? That's rather defeatist in my view.

Why wasn't there some hype by Mr. Rock about how the USU game wasn't a big deal? Seems like after USU self-destructed all we heard was how great the Utes are (or were). So what is it: Was the USU game worth anything or not? You can't have it both ways, Mr. Rock.

For all those bagging on Utah's stellar record, look at the PAC 12 conference wins---so far only 7 and quite possibly less than 10 after three years in the conference. This was supposed to be a gimme game for Utah, since they were playing in SLC, just like the game in SLC against Colorado two years ago. Oops!!

And what do we hear about their history? Oh, they won two BCS games several years ago. Glad they did because I don't see them ever going to the Rose Bowl----sort of like Arizona.

The mistake you made is assuming Utah will ever be a factor in the PAC. Not gonna happen. Their role was to be the red headed step child everyone beat on. Utah will only get to the rose bowl by purchasing general admission end zone seats.

BYU is and always will be the utes bowl game. Lose this week and Utahs season is over. Time to get ready to get drubbed in basketball. But u will always have the ski team that u can look to with pride.

Loved your comments Real Bass, you cracked me up! I see that a lot of people got this right where Rock was completely wrong. Utah desperately needs to beat BYU to have a shot a being bowl eligible and since beating BYU has been their only claim to fame the last two years and likely would be this year if they won, they really, really need a win next Saturday. That being said, I hope that BYU will finally get up for this game and prepare the way Utah has in recent years. Based on Van Noy's comments, I think their heading in the right direction.

    My predictions:

BYU will get more passing yards against the Utes than the Longhorns, but less rushing yards.
The Utes will get more passing yards against the Cougars than the Beavers but less rushing yards.
Both Hill & Wilson throw at least one touchdown and one interception each.
BYU wins because their defense and special teams will give the Utes worse field position than the cougars.

If the game has no importance, why then did the fans storm the field multiple times last year?

The losing team in the rivalry knew that there was going to be a chance to win the next year. That always softened the blow. It didn't hurt so much losing to Utah, a team that then went on to a disappointing 5-7, knowing that this year BYU could have some payback.

BYU needs to keep the foot on the accelerator and never take the foot off the gas. Utah, no matter how bad they were before the game is going to pull out all the stops to try to get this one.

For those who say that this coming BYU games means more to BYU fans than Utah fans is completely wrong. One, Utah needs that win, not just for bragging rights, but to go back into conference 3-1 instead of 2-2 facing UCLA, Stanford, Arizona, SC, ASU, and then Oregon. The last two I am giving Utah. This is a must win for Utah to get back on track and like someone else said here earlier to get some more kinks worked out and some more time on the field together. If Utah loses, it will hurt them in the long run. BYU wants to win for bragging rights, and with their schedule I think will have an easier time becoming bowl eligible. My thoughts on the game. I will be rooting for BYU, sorry Ute fans. But Utah can stop the run, secondary is still suspect, but BYU has not proven an ability to throw the ball or defend the pass real well. It is still a rivalry game and that keeps it close, but right now I will say Utah 34 BYU 20, Utah pulls away late. Hope I'm wrong.

Game 4 is just a distraction for the weak minded Utes. It's all about conference wins and Utah finds themselves a game below 0.500 already with a loss at home.

For weeks 1 thru 3 all we hear about is game 4. Last time I checked game 4 does not make or break a season. However, the distraction messes with the entire season.

All Mannion did was expose Utah's most glaring weakness... it's secondary. Give him credit, but I'd hardly call him arguably the conference's top quarterback. Not when the teams he's played include Eastern Washington, Hawaii and now Utah. Let's not forget Mike Riley couldn't even decide Mannion would be the starting quarterback until just before the season started.

This is a bad loss for Utah. An embarrassing one. One that I don't know how the Utes can expect to bounce back from. This was supposed to be the easiest of 1-0 conference starts and they blew it. They'll always have a chance against BYU because it's a rivalry game and Tayson Hill is a worse pocket passer than Tim Tebow, but who is this team going to beat in conference? Colorado? Wazzu? Those are about the only two I can see, and I wouldn't even call them gimmes based on what we know about Utah.

The BYU game is a huge must win for Utah. A loss to the Cougars could very well mean another 5-7 season for the Utes.

As for BYU, the Utah game is more about bragging rights than anything else, which in my opinion is pretty sad. The fact is, even if BYU beats Utah, Georgia Tech, Notre and Wisconsin, they'll still end up playing in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. The loss to Virginia ended any chance of playing in a BCS bowl.

If BYU is going to stay independent in football for the foreseeable future, they need to develop some kind of incentive to motivate their players and fans to reach for something besides the far away hope of playing in the BCS.

Perhaps they could sign a deal that if they win 10 or 11 games, they go to a good money bowl game like the Sun Bowl or Capital One Bowl. If they finish with 6 - 9 wins, then they play in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl or Armed Forces Bowl.

Last year Utah lead 24-7 in the 4th quarter before Whitt decided to focus on the clock instead of continue attacking BYU. It nearly backfired as we all know.

Utes defense needs to improve before our next conference game in two weeks. One last tune up game against a mid-major to get things corrected.

BYU vs. Utah game is now much bigger for the Cougar than for Utah for the simple reason that it doesn't affect our conference record and BYU's entire record IS their conference record. Spin it anyway you want Cougars fans but the simple truth is that it's a much bigger game for you than for Utah. This provides one last chance for Utah to get the kinks out before returning to conference play the following week against UCLA.

Notice how the majority of BYU fans are giddy this morning because Oregon State beat Utah? I remember back in the late 70's thru the late 80's, when Utah's program was in BYU's shadow. Some of Utah's fans acted the same way. Now it's Utah in a major conference, with two nice BCS Bowl wins in the last decade and domination over BYU. The roles have reversed now and it's BYU fan base cheering for all of Utah's opponents to help with their jealousy.

I hope the Utes do well this year, I really do. But the Ute football program is looking more and more like a flash in the pan. The flash's name was Urban Meyer. Outside of his tenure there they really have never done much. The 2008 season was largely with Urban Meyer recruits. It's really been downhill ever since. Again, I hope they do well, not hating on the Utes. It really just looks like it was Urban Meyer that temporarily made this program a big success.

BYU players do not care what Rock thinks. The Cougars want to beat everybody on their schedule. I believe the same thing goes for the Utes. The game takes on a reduced significance outside of the state with bad losses for both teams, but somehow I don't think a single player will care once kickoff happens.

    About last night--

Utes 1st quarter was baffling. OSU D is probably the weakest defense in the PAC12 that Utah will face this year. I fully expected the Utes to put up points on nearly every drive last night (and this from a BYU fan). I had been telling people all week the game would come down to whomever had the ball last. At least that part happened.

Utes have no easy games the rest of the way. Every team on the schedule can beat the Utes. The Utes will be underdogs till they face Colorado and probably on a long losing streak.

Travis Wilson when he wasn't throwing the ball to OSU players looked great. I can't wait to see how he develops. Wilson will take the Utes to a bowl his Senior year.

Uh, nice try but Mannion is not the best quarterback in the PAC 12. He's not the best quarterback in Oregon. That would be Marriotti with the ducks. Get ready to hear that fog horn go off numerous times when Oregon puts up at least 60 before calling the dogs off.

Any PAC-12 game is more important than BYU. Still fun to win though

Nice to see the Beavers win a tough game. One of my Alma Maters (UW, OSU), but I still could not get the game in LA. Best game of the night, thriller for sure, and LA stations didn't pick it up. Tough luck for the Utes, but 3 picks will do that for you. Washington hammered Illinois behind an amazing performance by Price and Bishop Stankey. UCLA beating Nebraska and USC looking better, not to mention Oregon and Stanford, indicates a real murderers row for Utah. Luckily, Utah does not play the Huskies this year.

So the BYU game doesn't matter, does it? Good thing, I guess. Sorry Mr. Rock, every game matters if you're not likely to be bowl eligible without it. I does matter a lot to BYU, though. A whole lot. I expect that Utah will find out next Saturday how much it does matter.

    Stupid article.

"Utah knows how to beat BYU"

Hold your horses there. Last year BYU beat themselves with a QB that didn't know when to stand down. Same goes for the previous two years. Mistakes and miscues on the part of the BYU offense were a far bigger factor than anything that the Utes did.

Apparently Utah knows how to lose at home to a team that lost at home to Eastern Washington.

    Food for the soul.

Rock, my man.... You think that Mannion is the best QB in the PAC 12? Are you not allowed to watch Oregon games or something? Have you not heard of UCLA? Mannion is, at most, the third best QB in the PAC 12 behind Mariota and Hundley. Come on, my dude! Utah is in PRETTY deep now after losing a game they needed to win. The demise of USC helps them out a bit, but they need to be perfect at the right times to get into a bowl game this year. That includes beating USC and Arizona State on the road in consecutive weeks. Good luck, Utah.

Don't kid your self - this will be utah's "bowl" game.

Brad Rock made his point Utah needs an early Pac 12 win. BYU is a much bigger game for the Utes than Oregon State in my opinion. Utah has had the ability to sign Utahs best football players which helps the program in so many ways. BYU needs these athletes so the outcome of the rivalry really matters. Utah is a great football team, watching them play last night, their resilience was unbelievable as was Travis Wilson. BYU has the best team in at least 5 years so it maybe the best game in a decade. BYU has the edge simply because its at home and the Cougars have confidence and enough talent to win.

Pathetic. The media is now making excuses for Utah's loss next week.

    Excuses brought up:
    1. They should have won their opening PAC game at home.
    2. They were focusing on UCLA next week to get their first PAC win.
    3. BYU doesn't really matter because it's like playing Weber.

Why write this article after the game? If this game was so big, why not write it before the game? The BYU game matters but the media is already panicking because they know Utah will be down in the dumps all week and BYU is riding high after a bye week and destroying 5-star studded Texas.

Ute fans will not be happy about this kind of brutal honesty.

Is there enough emotion left for the Utes to get up to play BYU this week or UCLA the following?

Will Ute fans even attempt to get out of bed after last night?

Rock's analysis of Utah's conference play is spot on. If Utah wants to look like a big boy, they need to consistently play (and beat) the big boys...although it's debatable whether Oregon State qualifies for that title. The last couple of years, they have done moderately well (especially last year), so sure, let's give 'em the benefit of a doubt.

As for his mention of the Utah-BYU rivalry aka Holy War, and his summary "Utah knows how to beat BYU" ...well, we'll certainly see about that next week. My advice to the Utes? Get some rest, then work hard, because this week's game will probably be another brutal one.

Silly Brad, the reality of the matter is that next week will BE the utes bowl game. There is no post season for the utes. They and their fans will be home watching and cheering against BYU in the post season, just like last year.

Utah has been exchanging home wins with Oregon State. But that all changed last night. By losing at home they just took a big step backwards in the PAC 12.

    Way to go Beavers!

There are bigger games all around these days. This year the wins I wanted the most in order are:
    1) notre dame
    2) Wisconsin
    3) Texas
    4) Boise
    5) usu/Utah

    A ton of football left

Brad, your premise is incorrect. You, like Duckhunter previously, incorrectly assume that the rankings of the bowl games directly reflect conference positioning, like in the NCAA Football video game. The pecking order of the bowl games doesn't mean this, it means that the bowls bowl committees get to make their invites in that order. In 2011, UCLA, the South Division champions, was forced into the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, which ordinarily would've been (second to last for seven eligible teams), but with Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl, became the PAC's seventh and final bowl destination. Utah, which finished in a three way tie for sixth overall, was invited by the Sun Bowl ahead of ASU and UCLA.

So, no, the BYU game is no less important to becoming bowl eligible and being invited by particular bowls than any other game. The payouts aren't that big of an issue anyway, since the conference shares the revenue of them. So the conference's real goals should be: A. continuing to place two teams in BCS bowls, and B. placing as many conference teams into bowls as possible.
