The reason for the decline in religious observance among Jews (and it has been massive) is simply because most Jews no longer believe the fairytale. This trend has been going on for a few hundred years, but was great accelerated by the Holocaust – very difficult for a Jew to believe in the God of Abraham after so many millions were murdered.

Travel to Israel today and one finds a mostly secular country. They are Jewish by nationality and culture, not by a shared belief system. In fact many Jews find it more than ironic that their anachronistic book full of legends & superstitions is considered sacred (and often literally true) by the two largest religions on the planet.

Judaism and mainstream Creedal / Reformation Christianity have one very important trend in common, division into various doctrines and churches from historical and modern movements that interpret the same doctrine differently.

In the Old Testament, the Jews as God's covenant included all 12 tribes of Israel before dissent and divisions scattered 10 because of wickedness. God would remove Priesthood authority when people fell away and reestablish again when they repented.

Anytime God establishes His Church on the earth in different forms according to the faith of those who receive it, there is Priesthood authority, covenants, and a living prophet. When Priesthood authority is removed, then it is only the power of humanity and not God. Massive divisions occur over time because there is no prophet and spiritual discernment by the power of the Holy Ghost to know God's works from man-made precepts.

We see this pattern over and over again in religion. God's covenant people and church was never meant to be mainstream because the world runs contrary to God's will and laws, and represents the opposition that tries the faith of those who receive God's truths by His Priesthood authority, covenants, and ordinances.
