I appreciate the author's opinion, but I don't believe for half a second that this is the opinion shared by the VAST majority of "recreational" runners who go out and run marathons, half marathons, 10 milers, 10Ks, 5Ks, triathlons, etc. In fact, I would go so far as to say that most of them have no idea who the first 10 names are that cross those finish lines, and more importantly, they don't care. They're running because a year ago they go told they had diabetes and they decided that was a wake up call to take care of their body, because their mom got diagnosed with breast cancer and they wanted to do something to show support, because they decided one day that they were going to do something they never thought they could do. Do you want to see something inspiring at a marathon? Don't catch folks running across at 2 hours and something minutes. Watch the plump old guy swagger across at 6 hours, and hear about how 10 months before he couldn't make it out of his front door without being short of breath he was so fat. That's inspiring.

Why would I want to pay extra for elite athletes to get free travel and hotel at the races I go to? So I can bow at their feet? Who cares about the elite? I am there for myself, not for them. I am running for a personal best or to be with my friends. And I love seeing local runners kick everyone's tails out there instead of someone 99.999% of the other runners have never heard of. "CGI reportedly said in that email to sports agents that it planed to use the more than $400,000 that it spends on elite athletes to cater to the “back-of-the-pack” runners. " RIGHT ON CGI!!!
