Being more of a Basketball fan than a football fan...

I can't wait for b-ball now either.

WCC is weak! Adding Pacific helps at most marginally. BYU needs to upgrade its non-conference schedule even more to compensate for all of the RPI 100+ games that they will get from conference play.

BYU's schedule is good enough to get a good seed in the NCAA tournament if BYU does well. And giving yourself a decent chance for success in the tournament is really all that matters as far as post season success is concerned.

The WCC! I laugh every time I remember that's where byu was relegated to.

Nothing like saying "we're the 3rd best team in the ninth best conference in the nation"

LOL!

And how exactly does being the tenth best team in the 6th best conference trump being the third best team in the ninth best conference?

@ Chris B

So how did the U do against BYU last year, and the year before, and the year before that?

"BYU needs to upgrade its non-conference schedule even more to compensate for all of the RPI 100+ games that they will get from conference play."

10 in-conference games against teams that finished 101+ in the RPI and 8 against teams between 1-100 (including 4 against the RPI top-30). Not great, but better than you are making it out to be. As for the non-conference, there are an additional 5 or 6 (depending on the result of the UT game) games against RPI top-100 in the non-conference.

RPI Rank -- # On Sched -- Teams
1-25 -- 2 -- Gonzaga (6)
26-50 -- 4 (5) -- OR (47) and IA State (45), possibly Wich State [37]), St Mary's (29)
51-100 -- 7 -- Weber (85), Stanford (77), Pacific (99), Santa Clara (100) and UMass (56)
101-200 -- 7 -- Utah (162), Utah State (109), San Diego (165), USF (167) and Texas (116)
200+ -- 10 (11) -- PV A&M (314), UNT (246), LMU (211), Pepp (212), Portland (232) (possibly 2 in CBE and DePaul [204])

This is not a bad schedule, sorry.

That comment was from caleb, not Riddles.

I agree with you; BYU's schedule is good enough that if BYU does well, 25+ wins with multiple wins against RPI 1-100 teams, and a 2nd place finish in the WCC, they'll be in line for a decent seed in the tournament; if BYU does great, with a WCC championship and a 30+ win regular season, they'll be in line for a Top 16 seed.

Unfortunately, little sister, BYU owns us in basketball.

7 in a row, 11 of the last 12, 149-145 overall, 76% to 46% winning percentage, 8 20-win seasons to only 1, 6 NCAAs to only 1 during the Dave Rose era.

BYU is an improving national player; Utah is a washed-up has been.

Has any PAC 12 team played in 6 of the last 8 NCAAs like BYU has?

34,000 student university whose "fans" boast of national caliber facilities. Their football team is relegated to scheduling 2 for 1's and their Olympic sports are relegated to playing in HS like gymnasiums on the road. How embarrassing.

Its better than being a ute in whatever situation u find yourself in.

What are you last in the conference? I don't even know. No check that I don't care.

I would rather be a BYU fan than a u fan for any sport, wherever, whenever, or whoever they play.

I would also rather be an ASU fan, Boise State fan, UVU fan, and USU fan before I even entertained being a u fan.

Then I would have to go through the other five schools I have connections with...

then I may consider being a u fan...

No, not even then.

I disagree with those who think BYU's b-ball schedule is good enough and I can't wait to get out of the WCC.

The problem the Cougs have is that they don't play good enough teams during the season and when the get into the post season they simply aren't ready. They rush their shots, they have too many turnovers, they get nervous frankly and they panic. They get "sped up" and they can't slow themselves down. The game just happens too quickly for them.

They simply must play better competition to get used to the speed and quickness that they will see in the post season. They need to learn how quickly defenders from the best programs can close-out on shots - how quickly they can fill in lanes - how quickly the get to loose balls etc.

Each year there are 32 teams that win in the now second round of the NCAA tournament. We should be one of those teams every year. It shouldn't be too hard to find 10 mormon kids who can play.

As an aside - Coach Rose is awesome - he should make millions per year - pay the man more.

What's really embarrassing, is a once proud basketball program, that plays in front of a vast sea of empty red chairs, loses to teams like Sacramento State, Southern Methodist, Montana State, and UNC Ashville, only has a 46% winning percentage for the last eight seasons, and hasn't won a single NCAA tournament game in almost a decade.

Almost as embarrassing, is a former "bcs buster" that can't even beat the lone WAC team on their schedule to qualify for a bowl.

Utah....the 15th best basketball team in the state. And what's is even worse is that the PAC-12 doesn't even make them take down those banners around SLC during BBall season. They keep playing like they have the past several years and you will see that happen.

Obviously to not be hypocritical, this also applies to football right?

9 of the last 12 and 3 in a row for Utah.

@ ManInTheMiddle:

Since you obviously have all the answers to improving the Y's already very good basketball program, perhaps they should just fire Rose and hire you, so you could find those "10 Mormon kids who can play". Then it would be you could be making all those $millions per year you are advocating.

Unlike Utah's flash-in-the-pan football success, BYU's recent domination of Utah in basketball isn't just confined to a handful of head-to-head games and a couple of bowls, it's been across the board, in national rankings, consensus POY awards, post season tournaments, conference championships, and overall record.

BYU to play a home-and-home with San Jose State in 2015 and 2017.

BYU doesn't have the luxury of playing Colorado and Washington State every year, so the Cougars have to sprinkle in teams like San Jose State to round out their schedule.

This will be a great opportunity for BYU's Bay Area fans and recruits to attend a BYU football game.

San Jose State also announced a home-and-home with Oregon State today.

@ ekute and Chris B:

If you really want to know what embarrassing is, consider the fact that the basketball team you are disparaging has been totally dominating your Utes for an entire decade. Now that truly should embarrass you. Common sense would dictate that you build up as much as possible any team you simply can't beat. In this case, that would be the Y. As such, try not to embarrass yourselves any further. Chris... that also means the big LOL you thru out is actually on you... another crimson embarrassment.

@ 54-10:

In case you hadn't noticed, this particular article is actually about basketball... not football. We all realize the U hasn't got much to tout about when it comes to basketball, but when someone tries to deflect that to another sport in the middle of a online conversation, it makes that person seem pretty desperate.

Gonzaga is going to be much worse this year. They'll maybe be 40 to 50 in RPI. St. Mary's is going to be worse. This is probably not that much worse than BYU's traditional WAC or MWC schedules. But having +200 in-conference games is disappointing. I don't expect BYU to be that amazing this year so the schedule will work out just fine for them, but its just a real-boring conference when the 3rd and 4th best matchups (Santa Clara and Pacific) will be borderline top 100. When the top recruiting classes start coming home from their missions it would be nice if they upgrade the non-conference schedule. If they have to, they need to play one-offs at the home stadiums of some top 25 teams. try to get more home and homes with the MWC top teams.
