Maybe we can trade Detroit, Buffalo, & Alaska to Canada for Southern third of British Columbia and the rights to 52% of the Athabasca oil sands in Alberta?

This is a cautionary tale for all taxpayers and those who make the deals for public workers.
Too big to fail? There is no such thing.

When we lived in Michigan, Detroit was very business unfriendly. They had a city income tax as well as state and federal income taxes. It's tough to finance a city when you cut off your tax base and such a high percentage of the residents are on welfare. It's a frightening city...just a shell of it's past.

A few years ago while driving through Detroit, I had to leave the freeway to gas up before returning my car at the airport. That was the scariest 10 minutes of my life!

People of Detroit! How's all that Hope and Change working out for you?

    Ha ha! Hilarious!

Yes.... It was all the liberals' fault.

Lets just ignore the race clashes, the outsourcing of American jobs, etc.

For decades Detroit has been run by liberal principles, right into the ground, where the rest of America and the world are headed.

The fruits of socialism! We have all watched the growth of socialism in our country and observed it in operation in many other countries (Greece, Spain, Portugal et al). What no one has ever seen is its freeing the hearts of men of selfishness and greed or of its bringing peace, prosperity or freedom. These things socialism will never bring, nor will it ever do away with idleness, promote industry, thrift or self-respect because it is founded in theory and in practice on force, an evil principle!

I'm waiting for the Paul Krugmanite Keynesians to tell us Detroit could have avoided all the carnage if they had only spent more, and that austerity has led to its demise. Any takers?

"We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt. We bet on American workers and American ingenuity, and three years later, that bet is paying off in a big way." -Barack Obama, October 2012

I guess since Obama was reelected a few weeks after saying this, this statement doesn't matter anymore, huh?

This is a classic example of how organized labor loots municipalities, counties and states. Michigan took the first step to rectify this situation last December when they outlawed the "closed shop" prohibiting unions from forcing all employees to sign a union card as a condition of employment. Unions today are no different than the trusts or monopolies that existed a century ago, there are good and bad. But this country needs to end its obcession with union jobs and thinking the union wwy is the most effective method to preotect the middle class. most union bosses are clueless in how to run a business and think everything from the Big 3 auto companies to all levels of government including public education are deep pocketed, bootmless pitts of ca$h. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Ah yes, the liberals with all their unions and entitlement mentality will now reap what they have sown!

    Union pensions, anyone?

In my opinion this should be black bordered and a headline. A warning to each of us that there is no free lunch. Being fiscally responsible begins at home. Be aware of our cities' budgets. Don't abdicate your vote. Be involved. Today Detroit, tomorrow the rest of us.

all this talk of "deserving" is disgusting

The only time they should be using "deserving" is that whoever is owed money deserves the money promised to them.

Its the liberal mentality that because I was born, I deserve food, clothing, housing, health care, education, ... regardless of what I do.

    Pathetic.
