The police did a full investigation and determined = self defense. The local
Prosecutor agreed = never should of come to trial. When Martin went to grab
Zimmerman's gun when he saw it was now a Life and Death situation and he
made the decision to shoot his attacker rather than lose his own life. Would you
just lay there and let someone beat in your face and then let them grab your
weapon to either shoot you or someone else one day?FYI - Racism is
about control and growing government. Jessie Jackson , Al Sharpton are just
tools who are brought out to further the agenda. Sadly one day that powder keg
is going off and soon I believe, gotta see how far them coming Goberment cuts go
For an a count of what Jeantel told Piers Morgan, go to rushlimbaugh and read
it. Deseret News won't allow me to publish a good account of it because
the offensive language used by Jeantell, trayvon's girlfriend, is
postaledithFreeland, WAPerhaps in Washington people think GZ was
guilty of some unnamed crime , but not the entire country. Zimmerman was found
not guilty of the charges brought by the state. Most people accept the rule of
law and don't riot when things don't go their way. There were no riots
after OJ Simpson's acquittal. TX Turtle,Most people would have
run the few yards to their home and safety. Trayon didn't know GZ was
armed. Knowing that may have convinced him not to punch GZ in the face, throw
him to the ground and pound his head. Had Zim been knocked unconscious or died,
Martin would be the defendant. When both "flight or fight" reflexes were
tuned to fight, no one wins.
Trayvon had a right to walk the streets without an armed person following and
ultimately chasing him. Trayvon had a right to defend himself against a
stranger chasing him.
We should be able to defend ourselves. This should be a victory for most people
of color who tend to live in higher crime neighborhoods. I cannot understand how
we don't see it this way. The right to defend our neighborhoods, set up
neighborhood watch programs and protect our neighborhoods from ANY who would
want to harm them, regardless of race or ethnicity has been held up. I am sorry
that Treyvon was acting suspiciously and in a neighborhood suspicious of
outsiders. Racial profiling DOES happen, it is real and terrible but I
don't think this happened here. I just wonder if he would have just left
the neighborhood or explained what he was doing in the first place maybe no one
would have lost a life. He was a teenager and in a neighborhood where he
didn't live. We have to be able to protect or homes and families. This is a
win for everyone in that way only. Both Zimmerman and Treyvon are victims in
some way in this awful event and trial.
I think that we are all missing something, Its about the children and
particularly the children in Florida. Casey Anthony, an adult, her child is
dead, no justice, George Zimmerman, an adult, Trayvon Martin a 17 year old child
is dead no justice, what is common in both situations not being black or white
just being a child in the state of Florida. I think the people in Florida, the
lawyers and the courts should be ashamed of this. We as people need to be
concerned about children in this state, the precedent has been set, we need to
remove race and remember that in both cases there was a child and an
irresponsible adult. Put your child in the picture for some reason they can be
killed in the state of Florida and the guilty in Florida will probably go free,
how can this be just when a child dies at the hand of an adult. When my child
was 17 he made decisions as a child, when he became an adult I expected him to
take on the role of an adult.
You're a bunch of hypocrites in Utah!
I heard some black leader stating that if this was the other way around, then we
would all know the outcome. He was making the assumption in speaking to nonblack
or white Americans that we would justify this behavior because of race if it was
the other way around. Seriously? Pure Afrocentric bias dodo. Most all people are
justice biased and I would say that in this case the Hispanic man had reasonable
cause to pull out a gun and defend himself. Parting words to Travon...Your
mistake for beating on a man that had a gun and the right to use it. We hope others will learn as they have apparently taken it into consideration
because I don't see any wide spread riots in any gun rights states.
This reaction baffles me. The apparent rationale is that if any black person is
killed it must be racially motivated. That is absurd. We have in this country
jury trial. We don't have trial by media or mass hysteria. A jury
deliberated and didn't convict. And no, we don't know what they knew.
And we have no idea (really) what happened that night with Martin and
Zimmerman. The fact is that despite all the hysteria that prompted
Zimmerman's arrest, and apparently drove expectations for this trial, there
just was no proof and therefore, thankfully they weren't swayed by public
trial, the jury got this one right... because there was doubt... there is a
lot of doubt. And if you're reading this and you have no doubt, if
you're 100% convinced it was not self defense and was racially motivated,
unless you were there that night (if so, why didn't you step forward as a
witness?), you got your conviction from media coverage or you've got some
Isn't it interesting that these people are decrying justice because it
wasn't the kind that they liked. I have news for you. Learn to live with
it. Justice was served because the system worked. Maybe not to your liking,
but it worked. Personally I didn't agree with the OJ verdict.
I thought it was a miscarriage of justice, but I lived with it and didn't
go and protest the stupidity of the jury and verdict. Was Travon
dying a sad thing? Yes. Should he have gone after Zimmerman? No. Had he just
gone to his destination, nothing would have happened. But he turned around and
went to fight. That caused his death. Sometimes, our actions have
consequence. In this case, it lead to the death of a young man. Had Travon not
started thumping Zimmerman, he would still be alive.
re: teeohThere is proof that Zimmerman shot Martin. I was
pointing out all of the "facts" that everybody who claims to know the
story are fabricating. It is my opinion that in a case where a
killer is obvious and admitted, that the burden of proof when there are no
witnesses should fall on the killer (to avoid manslaughter at least). This is
actually my understanding of affirmative defense laws. The burden of proof is
much smaller, but it IS the defense's burden. This wasn't explained in
the trial though. I don't find it logical that you can admit
to killing someone and then say to the prosecution, "you now need to prove
that it wasn't self defense". In actuality, the defendant should have
to prove this. That is where those laws come from.I think that there
are some that think everyone wanted Zimmerman to be found guilty of murder. This
isn't really true. Murder was not reasonable. And that is where I think the
prosecution lost this case. Trying to make a case for what wasn't there,
and allowing the real case to slip through their fingers.
There is intelligent life in the US, Barney. Most of the country feels that
Zimmerman got away with murder.
Comments to my previous post : i would never condone any violence or wrongdoing
anyone no more that i woud condone that some people get away with the wrong they
do by using fallacious arguments.
Ragnar, I find it interesting that you give a list of "no proof" of this
and "no proof" of that, then immediately say "there are plenty of
reasons to take this to trial..." Usually, proof or evidence is
needed to take a case to trial. Of course, that is exactly why the prosecution
had a problem in this case.
Both were minorities. Where is the racial question? The jury heard the
prosecution and defense and witnesses (which nearly no one else heard nor saw)
and rendered a decision. What is the justice question? Emotions were stirred
which often leads to erroneous decisions. Only decency can solve this powerful
problem. Unlawful retaliation is committed by or creates criminals. Those who
resort to this course of action need prosecution. One person is
dead for which we have great sympathy. One person is alive and was not
convicted of wrong doing. He can be made stronger or he can be destroyed. He
has gone through fear, unsurety and all the other emotions attending an action
of this time. I choose to build - not destroy.
No one ever defined racism as being the behaviour of one specific community
towards another specifix community. Racism is from one community towards
another, no matter which community. And when someone does something terrible to
another person and if that person is denied the right to defend himself/herself
on any ground, it is an act of total injustice. As long as people are
judged on facts and the facts are proved then no one should use any fllacious
argument to get away with what they do, which seems the case here or that would
mean that that community or any other can continue to do all manners of
wrongdoing and get away with it.My comments are made as a general
observation as i suffered the same kind of prejudice because i was a caucasian.
So i can understand how things can get twisted by some so they get away with
what they do. There is a prejudice there and the one that are prejudiced are
those who used the racist card to justify what they do or deny others their
right to legal action or self defense.
We continue to ignore the that that most "inter-racial" crime (about
90+%) involves "black" perpetrators and "white" victims. Of
course that doesn't matter to many, because it doesn't support or
further their agenda.
Personally, I pray that none of us gets the "justice" we actually
deserve. Think about it.
FT1/SSThere is no proof that he was snooping around the
neighborhood. Zimmerman didn't know Martin's history, and it
doesn't really have anything to do with the case anyway (I notice you left
out Zimmerman's record, why would that be?)Well there are laws
against following, but lets just say you are right. No law against walking
down the street either.Dispatcher doesn't have authority, just
training and experience that NW don't have.He could have done a lot
of things, Zimmerman also could have not pursued him. There is no proof he
was under the influence of drugs. Trace amounts of thc were found in
Martin's system, which could have come from any time within a few weeks. No proof that Martin attacked Zimmerman. No proof that Martin was the
aggressor. There are plenty of reasons to take this to trial if you
aren't completely biased in the case.
To draw comparisons between Zimmerman, who defended himself when attacked by a
stranger in his own neighborhood simply for following a drugged-out suspect, and
the innocent victims of Franklin is unconscionable. If somebody jumps me,
breaks my nose and puts me in an indefensible position while bashing my skull
onto concrete, I will do exactly as Zimmerman did, which was to scream loudly
for help, and when that help does not come, protect my brain and my life by
shooting the assailant. The race, religion, age or nationality of my assailant
is immaterial and irrelevant. The FBI concluded that Zimmerman was not racist
after interviewing dozens of witnesses. In fact GZ had mentored black children
in his home, had taken a black woman to a prom, was the product of a mixed-race
or at least a mixed-heritage marriage and was the chief person who worked to
demand justice for a homeless black man, Sherman Ware, who had been attacked by
the son of a police officer. Though I detest those who judge others by their
race, religion or similar attributes, I have very little respect for people who
will protest a verdict while ignoring incontrovertible facts.
11,000 plus black on black deaths have been committed since Trayvon's
shooting, where's there outrage? They have more to worry about by people
from there own race. I would bet that just about all these people watched no
more than liberal media snipets of the trial. It's simple, Trayvon was
snooping around the neighborhood when spotted by Zimmerman. Trayvon was
investigated for home burgery, and drugs in the Miami area and fits the profile
of burgarys in the Zimmerman neighborhood. Zimmerman calls police and follows,
no law against following in this country, and dispatchers have no authority.
Trayvon was close to home and could of phoned police if bothered. Instead, under
the influence of drugs, turns around and attacks Zimmerman. Trayvon is the
aggressor assaults Zimmerman, and Zimmerman defends himself. Case closed, never
should of gone to trial. Alot of evidence kept out of the trial by a judge on
the side of the prosecutor. Well done to the prosecutor in there defense of
Zimmerman. They knew their was no case.
@Riverton,Is your brother African American? If no then you are
right, no one would care
Hypothetically, let's say my brother gets very angry with these protesters
and takes one down to the ground and starts pummeling him. Let's suppose
that guy has a concealed weapon and shoots my brother and kills him. If there
were a trial and the jury verdict was that the protester was acting in
self-defense and won't be convicted of murder, how many of these protesters
would be out protesting for my brother's sake? My guess is not a single one
would even be upset about my brother's death, let alone feel that an
injustice was done.
If we do not have faith in our Jury system, what do we have left.Locally we must
make sure we have the best people in our Law, law enforcement, city and county
councils, and government who understand and will enforce our Constitution, and
bill of rights. If our systems are corrupt or bad it is due to our own
These protestors don't want justice for Trevon. They want to lynch
Zimmerman. As has been pointed out, Zimmerman was investigated by the
FBI for racism, and came out clean.Charges were brought against
Zimmerman as a result of protests in Florida to put Zimmerman on trial. They
complied with the mob, and justice has been served. Now that justice
has been served, those same protesters don't like the result, and now are
calling for a lynching. Since when do the mobs run the judicial system?
I am disgusted by the protest regarding the Zimmerman case. This is not an
issue of racism, it is an issue of self defense mired in a misunderstanding on
the parts of both George Zimmeran and Trayvon Martin. It had tragic
consequences. But Trayvon started the physical altercation and George feared
for his life. I would too. Since when is reporting suspicious behavior a bad
thing? The neighborhood was experiencing a crime wave - GZ was trying to help
keep the peace. What happened to America? Why do we want there to be racism
where there is none? Why can't we let the country heal?
The encounter between Zimmerman and Martin happened a year and a half ago at
7:00 p.m., in the winter, when it's typically dark. If someone is wearing a
hoodie in the dark, it would be difficult to tell the color of anyone's
skin. This is a very sad case, but it has never been about race. If you want to
get mad at someone, try taking it out on the media because they are the ones --
like so many other things they "report" -- who have twisted things
around. And before you call me racist, you should know there are mixed races in
my wonderful family whom I dearly love.
per crime statistics from BJS.The rate of whites committing racially
motivated crimes against Blacks in the US is approximately 1 in 166,000. The
rate at which Blacks commit racially motivated crimes against whites in the US
is approximately 1 in 125,000. More blacks are committing crimes against whites
per capita than visa versa.look at homicides. from FBI Statistics
for 20101088 homicides of white victim by black offender240
Homicides of Black victim by white offenderThe list goes on and on.
One would be surprised with a little research. Racism exists in the US plain and
simple. Honestly, i do not see a way of eliminating it altogether. But, in
this day and age, races have never been on a more even playing field in the US.
Make your own assumptions, but those are the facts.
@Happy2bhere,Trayvon Martin was on the phone to his girlfriend.
Maybe he wanted to continue that conversation in the privacy afforded by the
outdoors, where he could wander around, focusing all his attention on what she
was saying to him and what he was saying to her. The mere fact that he spent
more time than necessary on his way home shouldn't come as a surprise to
anyone who's ever had a girlfriend.Yes, we now have witnesses
who have testified that Martin was on top, beating Zimmerman's head on the
concrete. As far as I know we have no evidence of who attacked whom first. We
don't know whether Zimmerman was under the influence of drugs or alcohol,
because the police didn't see fit to test him at the time. That was a
dereliction of their duty to investigate. Of course, they could test Martin
later, since he was no longer metabolizing the drugs. If we are going
to have armed men patrolling neighborhoods, they need to be much better trained
than Zimmerman. They should identify themselves as neighborhood watch officers
and offer to walk the person they meet to his destination.
BO stirred the pot, the media picked it up and ran hard and fast with it and
even edited the events to make the white-Hispanic look racist, then Al and Jesse
saw an opportunity and got involved (surprise) and the special prosecutor made a
fool of herself. Pretty well sums up the week. Question-what is their motive?
What and Why? Go figure!
Hey Sheople. While you were all busy getting distracted by this trial, which
most of you protesting obviously know nothing about, you're very own rights
and freedoms were being stripped away from you. How about that?
@Ronnie123"No Justice, No Peace".Lame.
@Ragnar DanneskjoldIn response to your statement. Nope, I
didn't, I kept up on it here and there. As you can tell I don't by
the "preconceived" notions of racism or profiling like everyone else and
I can only assume yourself bought into. And no, my opinion has no bias. What I
saw and learned from the evidence is that there was none. Again, I had no
preconceived notions, I can only go off of what I heard, same as you I am sure.
My understanding of the case is not approved of by you. Please don't take
offense but I really don't care if you approve of it or not. I am a person
who lives in the black and white, the grey is what gets people into trouble.
Either it is or it is not. Why leave it open to speculation, it is my opinion,
it does no mean I am right or I am wrong. Much like the evidence, in this case
it had to be wrong because there was none. We can only go off what was factual,
not circumstantial. Only my understanding of the law you know.
happy2behere,White Hispanic has been a race category on the census
for over a decade. Go walk around Mexico City, Buenos Aires, or Rio. Guess
what you'll find--a wide variety of skin tones. Just like in the US, most
Hispanic countries are made up of people of Indian descent, and European
descent. In a larger sense, race doesn't actually exist in a biological
way. It is entirely a social construct. It is often about self definition, and
from some of the claims by people such as Zimmerman's own cousin, he
absolutely identified himself as White and Hispanic. Also, to all
those complaining about which pictures the media used of Trayvon, do you know
what the last two pictures of him were? One hugging his mother, and one where
he is on a horse. Hardly the images of the thug you all want him to be.
RagnarWould you be saying the same if Trayvon had completed his head
bashing of George and it was Zimmerman who was either brain damaged or dead? And it isn't celebrating that someone died, it is that most of us
saw justice done with the known evidence of the case. That was not what
happened in either the O.J. case or the Rodney King case.
"Justice for Trayvon!"What does that mean? I don't
know. And the people chanting it don't know. The silent majority are
quietly and privately thanking God for a justice system that delivered
"Justice for George!"I wish I had a DesNews subscription so
I could cancel it for their constant use of slanted articles provided them by
the liberal media.
Re: UtahBruin"He probably said something to the affect of "Hey
you" which was probably returned with a finger and few choice words from
Trayvon who we all know now was a thug, not the innocent looking boy in the
picture."Obviously you followed the case very closely. Your
opinion has no bias or leanings. I'm sure your assessment of the evidence
contains equally unbiased, strictly academic interest in the case where you had
no preconceived notions. Your understanding of this case and the law are above
* CNN reported the news with the editing done by NBC.* What's
going on in the world, now the news is on the trial.* Should
Zimmerman have allowed himself to be beaten to death, and would it have been on
Just curious ... who created (or paid for) all these pre-printed signs? Was it
one of those groups or individuals who profit from (or who feel important when)
stirring up racial animosity?
No justice. No peace!
I don't have a concealed carry permit but the violent and irrational
behavior of some of the protesters have caused me to think that for my own
safety, a concealed carry permit might be a good idea.
@fed upwhy not add to that list the Muslims killed by Christians in
African countries and the Protestant and catholic violence in northern Ireland?
The comments on this article are sad.Lots of people crying about
racism and injecting politics. It reminds me of the group that the GOP got
together after losing the presidential election to talk about what needs to
change in the party. One of the points of emphasis afterward was to reach out to
minority communities, and start using speech that would attract more minorities.
It looks like the general sentiment from Des News readers (judging by # of likes
and # of comments) is that they would be more happy with a "Southern
Strategy" than an outreach program. I have found that there is a
sickening number of people who are basing their opinion on this case on
politics. The celebratory feeling from many people is even more disturbing. A
young man is dead. How can people forget that?
Everywhere I keep reading how wronged everyone was by this verdict. At least,
as far as I can discern, those who feel the outcome was a slap in the face of
justice, feel that way because someone who was black died at the hands of
someone who was not black. End of story. The evidence presented at
the trial and which was dully weighed by the jury, concluded that Mr. Zimmerman
was not guilty as charged. So, as we read these banners, justice for
Treyvon, does that mean we should put this unfortunate youth on trial for
assault (he struck Mr. Zimmerman). Should he be put on trial for illegal drug
use (evidence bore this out too)? Or do we simply want someone who is not black
to be convicted of something, anything, so that 'justice' can be
served?Let's put down the signs and try to focus our attention
on educating our youth to be law abiding citizens. Let's contribute our
time and our means to defending the countless numbers who are slaughtered each
year in the name of jihad, or those who go hungry because food is scarce for
I guess now that there is a racial category known as White Hispanic, due to one
parent being white, we can now call President Obama a White African American.
The simple fact here is that you can't take an isolated case and make an
example out of it. In this particular case, no matter who you think is right or
wrong, there simply wasn't enough evidence to make it worth even charging
Zimmerman. Did he do something wrong? I don't know and neither do you,
but innocent until proven guilty means this whole trial was a waste of public
Nothing was said about the trial. Why? I would like all the facts and then find
out what came out in the hearing and trial. In this country someone should be
deemed innocent until proven guilty. Was he proven guilty?
Whoever wrote this article was clearly race-baiting. None of the cases cited had
any comparison to the George Zimmerman trial. All the cases cited could clearly
show a hate crime and were abhorred by the public in general no matter what the
political stripe. With the George Zimmerman trial, here was an Hispanic
neighborhood watch person who seeing someone suspicious in his neighborhood was
simply doing his duty. When Trayvon Martin left and Zimmerman retreated to his
truck, Trayvon suddenly appears and threatens Zimmerman. He jumps Zimmerman and
proceeds to pound him. With his life endangered and Trayvon threatening to take
away his life, Zimmerman defended himself with deadly force. The person who
wrote this article reveals his own prejudice by framing it as a hate crime.
Deseret News needs to be more careful what is written and not allow such a
biased interpretation of the news.
As many on these forums continue to insinuate that George Zimmerman is the
"good Guy", and Trayvon Martin is the "bad guy" , I would ask
the DN to open up some files from GZ's past, legal information that was not
made admissible to be introduced or discussed at the trial because of motions by
George Zimmerman's defense lawyers.I would ask the DN to share George
Zimmerman's criminal history. This information, should the DN choose
to share it, will show what kind of an individual George Zimmerman truly is. I have faith in you right now, Deseret News. Please don't let the
information seeking public down.
SkepticalA big point you may have missed is that several minutes
passed where Trayvon could have already been in his home. What happened then?
One fact we seem to know for sure is that Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman and
pounding his head into the cement. The gun, may have saved Zimmerman from brain
injury or even death. It's therefore possible that Trayvon came back to
confront Zimmerman, and caused the physical confrontation. Therefore the gun
was a possible life saver for Zimmerman. And that's why many of us believe
in the right to carry is a good thing. And by the way Mr. Chymist, drugs make
people do stupid things. So it isn't irrelevent that Trayvon was drugged.
"Last year alone, nearly one black child a day under the age of 17 was shot
and killed in New York City. Shot mostly by other black city residents,"
Sharpton said. "Shootings and violence within our community by
one of our own is an outrage and an issue that we must confront..."
If Trayvon Martin had been a white gangster looking kid with a history of drug
abuse and violence, there would be no demonstrations. I don't think for
one minute that his color had anything to do with the killing - only the outcry.
I am courious any one ever follow up about the white baby being shot with his
mother in Georgia by black kids or how about the guy got beat up in Georgia by
blacks on this zimmer case I hope and pray its not going to be a race riot war
this wasn't a race issue. zimmermen is a Hispanic decent. a race card was
never played unkike the Utah case zimmermen wasn't going around shooting
blacks and jews just for the fun of it. yes it sad it happen. the liberal
media will play it all its worth. watch Obama will used this for his gun control
agenda. if some one attack me rather what color of their skin I would defend
The Rock recounts a lot of the most important points to this whole case, namely
the news media creating a racial issue where none existed. That editing of the
911 tape by NBC News, should have been enough to have their broadcasting license
revoked. There is obviously a liberal mindset in America that anyone not
liberal is a racist, and they try to prove it by trumping up a phony issue like
this one. Sharpton has been one of the worst at trying to create race problems
in America, mostly because without race division, guys like him and Jesse
Jackson, and other liberals have no foundation from which to attack America.
Thank God the justice system did not give in to the PC of this trial. However,
watch out for the race baiters to look for another trumped up issue to cry
about, and NBC to broadcast their propaganda.
The liberal mindset has not reached the point where EVERYTHING is about race.
People like Thomas Sowell, Ted Cruz, and Mia Love are conveniently ignored
because they don't happen to fit the pattern of the abused ethnic. Martin
was shot not because of his race, but because he decided to take an altercation
to the next level without considering all the consequences. Zimmerman went to
trial not because of a crime, but because of political pressure and an extension
of a modern lynch-mob mentality.
The idea of a comparison or reference to the Joseph Paul Franklin case is
absurd, ridiculous and offensive on its face. The FBI came to
Seminole County and interviewed dozens who knew George Zimmerman and
couldn't find a single person who felt in any respect that he was a racist.
He took care of black children in his own home, took an African American to the
prom, was raised in a bi-racial household. Why don't you get off it?Quick smearing George Zimmerman. All of the forensic evidence backed up
his story of what happened that night. The evidence demonstrated he was attacked
in the dark, and a jury of his peers found he acted in self-defense. So get off
it. Quit trying to make an issue where there is none.
It seems that the racism problem at this point describes those who do not want
equality, they want superiority. They don't want to have to adhere to the
rules they want new one's just for them.
Get a life folks. The law has spoken. Whether it is flawed or not is not the
question. What about all the blacks who kill blacks? Isn't that a bigger
problem than this one case? People who didn't even hear the evidence are
getting on their high horses over the verdict. You are going with what you think
happened without benefit of the evidence. Boy, can we be wrong when we do that?
Judging with unrighteous judgment. As I understand it, it was self defense. If
this had been Zimmerman (a hispanic) who shot a white teenager on drugs, we
wouldn't be hearing about it at all. So why do things bloom out of control
because of the color or the teenager's skin. Does that make you racist if
you only get upset over black people being killed? What about all the
unnecessary deaths? I know the Martin family is in pain and I understand that
pain but is this just making their pain worse? Seems to me they asked that we
not do this for their peace of mind. Lets do as the Martin family has requested.
As sad as this issue is, I find it interesting that no one is upset or outraged
that 90% of black people who are murder victims are murdered by other black
people. Where is the outrage Mr. Sharpton, Mr. Jesse Jackson, Mr. Obama and
As I watched the morning news I saw a street full of angry black men beating up
white men who all looked like they could be Obama's sons! Trayvon was
just as guilty as Zimmerman, unfortunately his fololishness cost him his life!
A jury of his peers with information the Lame Stream Media did not provide found
George Zimmerman not guilty. It appears the Democrats are now anti Hispanic.
The GOP should now use this to divide the Democrat base. I hate class warfare,
but the Dems are SO good at it.
I wasn't on the jury; I didn't follow the trial in any sort of detail.
It may well have been an injustice to convict Zimmerman of anything - even
manslaughter. Nevertheless, I'm saddened by the fact that an unarmed young
man, distractedly talking on the phone to his girlfriend, was pursued by an
untrained individual with a gun, leading to his death. This really illustrates
the dangers of untrained neighborhood watch individuals who take it upon
themselves to patrol the neighborhood. It would have been far better for
Zimmerman to stay in the car and let the trained police officers deal with the
situation. I hope that he is now asking himself why he didn't do that.Whether Martin had marijuana in his system is totally irrelevant to
anything. That's not uncommon and a trained police officer would have been
prepared for that.I hope that this entire episode helps people who
imagine themselves to be policemen protecting their neighborhoods to be a bit
less arrogant and self-certain when they characterize individuals in the
neighborhood as "punks who always get away".
Nearly 33 years ago, Johnnie Mae Martin's teenage son was shot and killed
in Liberty Park by an avowed racistOther than the name Martin what
is the connection? This is no way to improve anything.
These people need to go to the pet store, buy a dog, and name it
'Life'. Then, they'll have one.
President Obama stated in his book Dreams From My Father, that at an early
age,He was referring to middle teens, he became aware that he was gifted at
deceiving people about his true feelings of race. The context of his remarks
seem to be that he was very proud of the fact. He is showing that racism now by
his actions in this case by his words and actions. Eric Holder is also allowing
his racism to show. He should be equally as active in investigating and
responding to the nearly 200 deaths in Chicago over the 4th of July weekend. The
difference between those deaths and the Trayvon death is that most of the
Chicago deaths were determined to be Black on Black, and gang related.Since the media branded Zimmerman as a white Mexican, why don't they
label Obama a white Black? Could it be the media is a bit racist as well?
This "demonstration" is proof of how wonderful our freedom of speech
rights are.Even the least informed, most bigoted and misguided among
us can freely assembly and express their views. Anyone can protest
"...racism, police brutality and racial profiling," even when NONE of
these elements were present in the Trayvon Martin incident. Of course, there
was plenty of racism afterwards trying to lynch a man who legally defended
himself with deadly force, just because he was a different race than the man who
attacked him. There really are "low information voters" in
this country, and you can see them at demonstrations like this where emotion
trumps facts, agenda tops justice, and the liberal media alliance will reliably
show up and lend credibility to their cause, even when it is factually, legally
and morally wrong. It would be interesting to compare photos of this
demonstration with other radical left events, and I bet you will see many of the
same people at all of them. A mere handful out of a million plus in Salt
Lake.Freedom of speech is truly great, even when abused.
According to the young lady he was talking with TM was outside the house where
he was going to and apparently didn't go in. Four minutes later he was over
a block away from that house and fighting with GZ who shot him. That evidence of
what happened was introduced by the Prosecution and leaves plenty of reason to
believe that GZ had lost sight and broken off pursuit to return to his vehicle.
Maybe that along with other facts that we did not here provide reasonable doubt
to the 6 jurors who I heard went into deliberations with 3 votes of not guilty,
2 votes of manslaughter, and 1 vote of second degree murder. Sixteen hours later
they were unanimous in saying not guilty. Whether or not you like
the verdict our justice system worked the way it is supposed to.The State
failed to prove guilt beyond any doubt.
Racism like all other forms of hate that lead to violence are and have always
been wrong, but it is like the Hatfield and McCoy feud that went on for 100
years until well past the time it was forgotten that initially the feud was over
an allegedly stolen pig. Current racism charges and related violence over
Zimmerman killing Trayvon are a fraud in their own right because a six-woman
jury included including a Black woman found the evidence did not support the
charges, that simple. Not justifying any racism, the fact is that accusers of
racism by Whites are guilty of racism at higher proportional rates making it
totally unjustifiable that there should be national protests fostered by leaders
that incite to riot and violence. Ironically, this unfortunate killing of Black
Trayvon was done by a Hispanic, not a White, so why the animus against the White
community? Hispanics represent 17% of the population versus 14% for Blacks,
meaning this was one minority against another minority incident. Was the Sanford
"not guilty" verdict an opportunity for those who want to create unrest,
turmoil, and violence to keep themselves in the limelight as self-appointed
This tragedy should focus our collective attention on the following facts. 1.
13% of Americans are African Americans, but account for over 50% of people in
America's prisons. 2. Stop and think, half of the 13% of African Americans
are women, and women in prison only make up 5% of the prison population. This
points out that 6% of our population is African American males, yet this
population in America makes up 50% of those in prison. But wait a minute, a full
third of the African American population is children and we don't put very
many children in prison! These numbers clearly point out that approximately 4%
of America's population are African American males, yet they make up over
50% of those in prison. Is "the blindfolded "Lady Justice" so blind
that she can see her balance scales? I'm not saying the people in prison
are not guilty - I'm saying we need to address the real issues of inner
city poverty, poor education, and single parent families. All we do is get
tougher on criminals - and it is expensive and not solving the problem.
The outrage over the Zimmerman verdict was predictable. The issue of racism must
be kept alive, not because it eats at the fabric of our nation as it once did,
but because it is convenient for political and legal purposes. If racism
completely died away in America, the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons among us
would no longer serve a purpose and would become unknowns. The Democratic Party
would face a serious crisis as well.
The Zimmerman trial was about race and politics. After reading this article it
seems that the demonstrators were ignorant of the Florida stand your ground law.
George Zimmerman at the time of the conflict with Treyvon Martin felt that he
was going to die and that is why he acted.By all the evidence that
was presented and the facts that we know or were presented favored Mr. Zimmerman
from the beginning. As it has been said so many times, this case should have
never gone to court. We have many who want and do believe in social justice,
which by the way is wrong. They believe that because a young black
man who potentially was up to no good was killed that it is only fair that Mr.
Zimmerman be incarcerated or put to death. I saw that Heavenly Father was
mentioned in this piece. I find that ironic because as we learn in
The Book of Mormon there were many instances where the Nephites had do defend
their families, religion, and their freedom from being taken a way. So, they
were justified in defending themselves just as Mr. Zimmerman was justified.
In a second-degree murder charge, the prosecution must prove that the defendant
acted with ill will, hatred, spite, or evil intent. When self defense is
claimed, they must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that that the motive was
something other than self defense. None of the witnesses provided evidence of
these things. It would have been an injustice to convict Zimmerman
A protest against the verdict of George Zimmerman? Is there intelligent
life in the US anymore? What trial did these people watch that was
different from the one I watched. In Zimmerman’s own words to the 911
dispatcher; it was that he didn't know Trayvon Martin’s race, he was
profiled as a suspect carousing through the community.I believe there was
far less racism in America before the people in the executive office came to
power, I believe the majority of Americans are getting sick and tired of the
minority playing the race card for political and financial benefit.Catch a
clue you people, your blindly following the architects of racism i.e; remember
Tawana Brawley rape allegations?History does repeat itself. And the
Justus system worked.
Here is the problems in this case. First Treyvon was a punk. He attacked
Zimmerman. Next the phony media made this into a race case. Then the potus got
involved like he always does. Like with the Conn. case. Next the prosecutor
filed a case with no evidence. Zimmerman did what he should have done that is
protect himself. Now the same bunch who camped in the park last year are trying
again to get attention.
Too bad people don't have jobs and are resigned to govt. handouts and time
to wander aimlessly on the streets
What the "crowds" seem to want is revenge not justice. Justice was
served. 1) The state put on as good a prosecution as they could have and even
went overboard . . so justice served there. 2)The jurors of 6 women, 5 of whom
had children listened and did NOT find a preponderance of evidence to convict on
anything. Are the "crowds" saying all six are racists? . . . justice
served there 3) the case was NOT a stand your ground case. Wasn't even
invoked. It was a self defense case. 4) Both Zimmerman and Martin profiled; Did
both contribute to the fight , yes, could both have gone home, yes but in the
fight Zimmerman defended himself against the more aggressive Martin. Martin
contributed to his demise by trying to punch out Zimmerman.Does racism
exist? yes it does on both sides but NOT in this case. The real question is
why black young men feel they have to fight like that to "prove"
anything, whether in Sanford, FL or in Chicago?
This controversy divides not along racial lines but along ideological lines.
Most conservatives believe that Zimmerman is innocent. Liberals do not. The
conservative news sources presented facts that the old media just ignored. NBC
doctored a tape to make it appear that Zimmerman was racist. Zimmerman is suing
and for good reason. The old media twisted the facts. The local
police found that Zimmerman did act in self defense. The local prosecutors
refused to file charges because they had no case.State prosecutors stepped
in and charged Zimmerman with crimes that they could not prove.CNN started
calling Zimmerman a "White Hispanic" to distort the truth. The Feds
are considering prosecuting for hate crimes. The left needs racism
to flare up. If only 15% of the African American population were to vote
Republican the Democrats would never win the White House again and they would
lose all hope of controlling the House and Senate.Racism is a club used by
liberals to bludgeon conservatives. They must keep racism alive."Racist" is a name liberals call conservatives when the liberal is
losing the argument.
If people feel defending themself is wrong, fine, but no one has a right to
impose this philosophy on others.I'd bet that if these
protesters were attacked, some would fight back. Not all of them would be
willing to walk the walk.
Who sponsored this rally? What organization? Who is their spokesman? This
was not a spontaneous event. Look at all the pre-printed posters. In the
interest of fair journalism we ought to know who is behind it.
Am not sure that "Salt Lake Crowd Decries..." is the best headline for
this piece. Maybe you should have used "mob" or "rabble" in
place of "crowd".
Tim DeChristopher was there? Well then, it must be a worthy cause. He has
never wasted anyone's time/money.
They want "justice"? I can only assume that in these protestors opinion
a guilty verdict for Zimmerman would be justice.A jury of peers was
presented the evidence and found him not guilty. Who are we to say that justice
was not done? All we have seen is what is presented in the media; An emphasis
on Travon's youth, his race, and a photo showing him several years earlier
looking like a clean-cut smiling kid. How could anyone so young and small in
stature inflict the trauma upon Zimmerman that he reported, causing him to be
fearful of his life? Well, the kid in the photo is not the person that
Zimmerman confronted on that night. To pronounce Zimmerman guilty
when you have not seen the evidence, that that would be injustice. I was not
there, I must trust that the jury, having heard the evidence, came up with the
right and just verdict.
how many of those protestors were present the night martin and zimmerman
fought?a big, fat ZEROthey do not knowhow
many of those protestors heard every word of testimony and saw every but of
evidence?a big fat zerohow many of those protestors were
present in the jury room while the jury was deliberatinganother big,
fat zero.how many of those protestors came out in protests and riots
when OJ was found not guilty of murdering Nicole?another big, fat
zerowhy no cries of racism then?
@ Fed UpThose were my exact thoughts earlier today. All kinds of
black on black murder . . . in the hundreds. Any marching or protesting. Of
course not, that wouldn't benefit any agenda, movement, or politicians. Doesn't the black community know they are being played?
Hijacking Reverend King on this issue and then promoting violence, unrest, and
civil disobedience is incongruent. This is not a left or right
issue. This is just wrong.
@SC Native"Those protesting saying racism are racist. It was a
Hispanic man that killed a young boy."Hispanics can't be
racist? @abtrumpet"So, really, if any claims of
"racism" are going to happen it should be against these women."I disagree. Zimmermann is the one with the history of calling the police
to report suspicious behavior, every instance of which involved black
individuals. He's the one who decided without any legitimate basis I can
think of that Treyvon was a punk and worthy of alerting the authorities over. It
can totally be that Zimmermann is racist but racism isn't the charge here,
murder/manslaughter was. He instigated a situation that Martin elevated to a
fight that led to Zimmermann elevating it to Martin's death. One can consider that a racist starting a fight and both of them making
mistakes in handling it until eventually Zimmerman shot Martin to defend
himself. Doesn't require the person making that conclusion be racist.
I wish this Deseret News put it in perspective more. How many of are NOT out on
the streets protesting, because we're not vilifying a man who is not a
racist? Why don't they report on all the murders, actual murders, even of
innocent kids, that happen on the streets of Chicago and elsewhere, where no
weeping crowd is protesting for THEM? Where is the empathy and justice for
THEM? This country has become ridiculous and many obviously would rather have
"justice" as it is practiced in Iran rather than through the
democratic/court system we have here.
There was a tragic misunderstanding, fight and killing in Florida, but the
racism was spawned at the Department of Justice
This trial should have never happened. It happened for only ONE reason which I
will not state and we all know it.
Well, let's see. Trial by peers means that a jury of 4 women decided
unanimously that he was not guilty. And also, remember that if any one of the
jurors has any doubt at all, they cannot convict him of it. So, really, if any
claims of "racism" are going to happen it should be against these women.
But honestly, I imagine they considered this very carefully and did the best
they could. This was never supposed to blow up this huge. Only when the media
twisted it to make it look like it was a racially-motivated "murder" is
when it became a national sensation. Thank goodness justice isn't a
popularity contest. Or is it?
Why not protest the five hundreds gun deaths in Chicago last year?????????Or maybe the Christians killed in the middle east which was absolutely
Liberal media doesn't play up the fact that Treyvon was under the influence
of illegal drugs when he attacked Zimmerman In fact, when Zimmerman
called police he said "it looks like he's on drugs"He
was. Another fact: Treyin had four minutes to go home and/or call
police if he felt in danger before he attacked Zimmerman. He lives a
few dozen yards awayMore than enough time to call police or go home
or both if he truly felt scared Zimmerman did the right thing when
he noticed someone acting suspiciously He had the right to followHe had the right to carryHe had the right to defend.
Those protesting saying racism are racist. It was a Hispanic man that killed a
young boy. Get over it. Blame the prosecutors if you want to blame someone. They
are the ones that didn't present the case for a guilty verdict.
