There are many family motorboats that are rated for 10, 12, or 15 people
(19' to 23' open-bow type). From the pictures this boat was likely
suited for the capacity. In all the articles I've read there has been no
mention from officials that the boat was overloaded. The NPS at Powell is
usually quick to point out the failings of boaters in an effort to prevent
future mistakes. In this case they only pointed out that passengers (aged 12
minus) required to wear life jackets did have jackets.Hopefully
finding Jessica will allow the family to get some closure. Nobody expects to go
on vacation and not bring everyone home with them.
this is tragic. Yes there were far too many people in the boat and Lake Powell
is so big boats tends to hit high rates of speed ...but tragic none the less.
These poor families losing their family members is unthinkable and sad.
My wife and I were able to occasionally work with Jessica at the LDS Family
Services Riverton office. She was always cheerful, smiling, and helpful. She
radiated goodness. My heart breaks for the Jackman family. What a sad day.
