CO UteTalk is cheap. So far the Utes don't even have
architectural drawings of their new practice facility, let alone plans for how
to pay for it.Call us when it's actually finished; until then,
it's just like your expanded football stadium - nothing but a pipe dream.
@wookieNo the NIT wasn't the national championship and it is
interesting that you make that claim while not one source with the ncaa or the
university of utah does. Hmmmmm.....
Great to see that the BB team is getting a fabulous new facility. This will
help the program develop back to the success we had previously and be a nice
drawing card to show recruits.Regarding all the negative comments
from the tds fans, I going to ignore some easy responses. Nothing in the
article mentioned a team from Provo, Logan, or Ogden. If you can't get to
sleep at night without beating your chest about supposed superiority that is you
demon to slay, not mine.
Funny how a building brings us a together. Let's just destroy it before it
destroys us.Signed, BYU's trophy case bigger than anyone's
in the region.
AZUTE1In no way can you prove that a team that only beat TWO college
teams during the regular season, lost in the opening round of the NIT, won the
2nd rate tournament of the day, finished 6-1 overall, and then won a meaningless
exhibition game that was only played as a charity event, was the 1944 national
champion. The only thing the Utes won in 1944 was the most
watered-down NCAA tournament in history after most of the teams in the country
had suspended their basketball programs and the few remaining teams consisted of
Freshmen and a few Sophomores because everybody else was busy fighting a world
war.The Helms Athletic Foundation didn't recognize either the
NIT or NCAA tournament winner as the national champion, but instead selected
Army(15-0) as the 1944 National Champion.

been 8394, but actual warm bodies in attendance wasn't even close, more
like about 5,000.HC capacity is about 15,000. Review photos of just
about every game this past season and you'll notice that about half of the
seats in the lower bowl are empty as are most of the seats in the upper bowl. Most of those empty seats in the lower bowl are owned by long-time
season ticket holders who are only holding onto their season tickets in hopes
that the Utes will some day have a basketball team again. In the meantime, they
have better things to do than waste their time watching the Utes lose to nearly
every team with a pulse.
PAC Man, Utah's attendance figures for basketball are indeed way down from
where they were for decades, but you should at least quote them correctly. Utah

deepblue--Montverde Academy, FL was the H.S. NC....Nice try.just the fax--In no way, whatsoever, did you even remotely
refute utahcountyUTE....Hysterical! Nice try.
utahcountyute"There is a banner in the HC that
says....University of Utah--1944 NCAA Champions. Exactly like Louisville for
2013."And there are TWO banners hanging in the Marriott Center
that say Brigham Young University 1951 and 1966 NIT Champions, exactly like Long
Island University's 1939 NIT National Championship Banner.Unfortunately for Utah 1944 and 1947, and BYU 1951 and 1966, their banners
only represent tournament championships, not national championships.Times change and the NCAA champions of the late 1930's and early
1940's weren't the defacto national champions like they are today.
Wookie, Rubber duckie and the restBottom line....The
Utes have a banner hanging in the HC that says "1944 NCAA Champions"
exactly like the one hanging in Louisville's gym from this past year.Along with the other finals(98), Final 4 appearances, Elite 8 and the
many many Sweet 16's, the Utes are the "legacy" bball program in
the state of Utah. This is not even arguable.Go Utes!
So meetings about the university’s new $24 million men’s and
women’s basketball practice complex began after an architect was hired.
With no real plans and only a concept of what Utah wants, somebody at the U was
clever enough to figure out what it was going to cost.hmmmm
U 90"you have no idea how any of those guys will pan out until
they actually get to the college level"Yet Utah fans are
constantly making bold predictions about how successful the Utes are going to be
based on nothing but Utah's supposedly superior recruits. And
now, they've extended that narrative even further to making bold
predictions about how merely building better facilities is going to dramatically
improve their recruiting, and hence, their on field/court success.Pot meet kettle.
The bottom line....There is a banner in the HC that
says....University of Utah--1944 NCAA Champions. Exactly like Louisville for
2013.These facilities will be fitting for the legacy basketball
program it is.Go Utes!

@Wookie: "the 1947 NIT championship was the National Title back in
1947"It was an NIT championship, which is an accomplishment, but
not a national championship. Here are the Helms Athletic Foundation
National Champions for 1944, 1947 and 1951.1944 Army(15-0), not
Utah(6-1)1947 Holy Cross(27-3), not Utah(19-5)1951 Kentucky(32-2),
not BYU(28-9)As the only neutral, national organization of the day,
Helms credibility in selecting the true national champion is much more valid
than either the NCAA or NIT officials of the day, who are both obviously biased
toward the winners of their particular tournaments.
U90"The truth is CFIT you simply don't know if those
players are any good or not."The core group of players coming to
BYU within the next four years just won the high school National Championship
playing against the best high school teams in the country. If
that's not proof enough for U of just how good those players are, then
you're hopelessly blinded by your crimson goggles.
A new practice facility won't change a thing. It will be a
gross waste of money. Give the money to the Huntsman Center.
@ CFIT "Emery, Mika, Haws, Chatman, Calvert, Hartsock, Nixon, Worthington
and Shaw in the pipeline. Legit shot at Chapman and Dastrup. The best coach in
the West is in Provo. Do U really think I'm worried about the
future?"So you're telling us Dave Rose is a better coach
than Mark Few... the guy that built Gonzaga from nothing to a mainstay in the
NCAA tourney. Once again my friend, you don't know basketball like you
think you do. I could go on, but will save you from more embarrassment.Regarding the list of recruits, you have no idea how good those guys
are, that's just a list of names on paper at this point. Some of the most
hyped players turn out to be nothing, while players with lower expectations
excel. Just to use an example from your own back yard, Jimmer Fredette was
ranked below Chris Collinsworth in BYU's 07 recruiting class. The truth
is CFIT you simply don't know if those players are any good or not.
@CFIT "Expect to be disappointed..... there is a good chance the team will
be down from last year, after losing four key players"We're
supposed to listen to you because of your infinite knowledge of the game?
Didn't you guarantee that Haws, Carlino and Davies would average 60 pts per
game for BYU last year? The reality is that they averaged 50 pts per game. In
the last 30 years, can you name one college team that's had 3 players
average 60? No, you can't. Now that we've established you
don't understand basketball as well as you think you do, lets talk about
the 4 key players Utah is losing. Who are they? Dubois, Washburn and who else?
If you're talking about 5 ppt Dean or 3 ppg Martin, I don't think
they will be too tough to replace.
Duck et al,RE: Utah's 1947 NIT National Championship
team....Until 1949 the NIT winner was crowned the National Champ.
Then in 1949-50 there was a game fixing scandal in the NIT and from that point
on all the best teams participated in the NCAA tournament and that became the
new venue for determining the NC. So Utah's 1944 NCAA tournament victory
was not an NC but the 1947 NIT was.The Helms Foundation response is
so ridiculous I'm surprised some of you continue using it. Please
reference any support that would substantiate either the NIT or NCAA recognized
the helms foundations as the final authority on hoops NCs.
@ekute - "Pac12 money does equate to hate and envy from the byu" fans as
they worry about the future of their own programs."Emery, Mika,
Haws, Chatman, Calvert, Hartsock, Nixon, Worthington and Shaw in the pipeline.
Legit shot at Chapman and Dastrup. The best coach in the West is in Provo. Do
U really think I'm worried about the future?U on the other hand
lost four of your top six players. That's got to have Kryst worrying.
Congrats on the new facility, but I have to comment on some unreasonable
expectations.@Spokane Ute - "The table is set. Good coach, great
facilities, better athletes. Anything short of a NCAA tournament bid will be
disapointing this year."Expect to be disappointed. There is no
way Utah goes to NCAA this year, and there is a good chance the team will be
down from last year, after losing four key players. Coach Kryst
seems to be moving the program in the right direction, but Years 1 and 2 were
truly maintenance - just trying to get some players on the court to hold the
program together. 2013 / 2014 truly looks like the first year of rebuilding
where U will not lose most of the key contributors after the season.
Loveridge's senior season will be the Utes first chance at the NCAA and
even then it will be tough sledding, but should at least be a 20 win season.
Rockwell, do you not see the flaw in your logic? Neither team wanted to play
BYU as neither team had much respect for the 1984 BYU team. Old articles,
outside the state of Utah, and here in Nebraska clearly ridiculed the selection
and award of the NC to byu. This was based upon awarding it to them after
beating a team that went 6-5 and finished 3rd in their conference. In all
likelihood you wont see your illogic and will continue to boost this NC as the
proof of your relevancy. I on the otherhand think byu has more relevancy in the
modern BCS era even with no invite. Why? because of your success. I also
admire coach Bronco and his ethics and professionalism. Duck, the
1947 NIT championship was the National Title back in 1947. If you refute this
my friend, you will need to review now the NIT and NCAA operated back then.
Things have changed but their relevancy back in 1947 hasn't. Their title
was and is legit with NO considerations given otherwise. Go check your facts
and understanding and then we can carry on an intelligent conversation.Go UTES!!
@Truthmachine:You should also look at your facts. The reason Utah
only played 2 college teams is because many young men were involved in a little
conflict called World War II. Don't be fooled by the names of the teams
Utah played. They were comprised of ex college players, probably better than
most college teams of the day. Nobody, and I mean nobody recognizes the Helms
foundation, except BYU fans, because they kind of like things that are decided
by committees and media outlets, rather than things won on the field or court.
If you want to compare Utah and BYU basketball historically, you will lose every
time. I still haven't heard anybody argue against my Andre Miller comment.
Enjoy Game 7 of the NBA finals tonight, I'm rooting for the Spurs, but who
knows, maybe if they lose the Helms Foundation might name them champions anyway!
I love my new screen name!
@azute"I've seen the impact of a similar such
facility's had down here at ASU"Would you mind enlightening
us as to what those impacts have been? They sure haven't been on the field
or court where, other than beating up on utah, asu remains incredibly mediocre
in both sports year after year after year. Has the impact been that they look
nice and it gives an extra janitor or two a job?
In fact, none of the lists offered as rebuttals included a single national award
of any kind awarded to the Utes in either football or basketball.------Actually Kyle Whittingham was the 2008 National Coach of the Year.
You may want to do a little reseach prior to posting in the future. Ummm, nobody refuted my list either.Let's see your Sugar Bowl

WookieBYU's 1951 NIT winning team (28-9) was every bit as
successful as Utah's 1947 NIT champion (19-5), but neither was recognized
as a national champion. BYU won the Skyline Conference championship in 1951.
Utah finished 2nd in the Skyline Conference in 1947.BYU's 1984
football team, however, was recognized by a consensus of all five major national
selecting organizations as the official 1984 national champion. Just because BYU
was forced to play Michigan in the Holiday Bowl, after Washington and Nebraska
both rejected invitations to play the #1-ranked team, doesn't mean BYU was
undeserving of their national championship.Michigan, by the way,
would have played in the Rose Bowl if they'd beaten Ohio State in their
regular season finale.
@wookieCongratulations? It still doesn't change the fact it
wasn't a national championship. I'm sure your grandfather came to
grips with that, oh about 66 years ago. It is probably time the rest of utah
fandom does as well. How pointing out the truth is "throwing stones" is
something you're going to have to help me understand I suppose.Oh by the way I had a great time in Omaha last week watching my son play

Four appearances, and BCS bowl wins are NOT national awards.Keep
searching; there might still be some ancient trophy hidden in Utah's trophy
case that is so covered in dust that it has long since been forgotten -
doubtful, but maybe there's a shred of hope there somewhere.
Dear Duck, my old friend. My grandfather, who passed a year and a
half ago played on the 1947 NIT at madison square garden. The NIT, at the time,
was the more prestigious game to be played in collge basketball. Please do not
discredit the U's success. Please be mindful as well of the 1984 NCAA
Football trophy you esteem so greatly, as you may recall, they beat a 6-5 (later
6-6) team to be given/awarded this title. Michigan wasn't even the best
team in their conference. Thus, be careful throwing stones while in a glass
house. Go UTES!!
Ute66"Duckhunter should probably brush up on his history. The
1944 Utes beat NIT champion St. John's in a game played a few days after
the NCAA tournament."You should check your facts. The
Utes beat St. Johns in a meaningless exhibition game that wasn't recognized
by anybody as an official national championship game.In fact, the
Helms Athletic Foundation (which began selecting national champions in 1936 and
was the only such national organization of the day), didn't recognize
either team as the national champion. Helms selected Army(15-0) as the 1944
national champion. It's almost comical that a program that only
beat TWO college teams during the entire regular season, would try to claim that
they won a national championship in 1944 because they won the 2nd rate
tournament of the day, and the most water-downed NCAA tournament in history, and
then won a meaningless exhibition game.btw, Utah's 6-1 record
in 1944 wouldn't even get them an invitation to a conference tournament
LOTRUmm, Taklin Sports put together the select list to begin this
little debate. It's easy to spin and hype your program any way you want to.
Also, thanks letting us know what's ancient history and yesterday. Great
I've seen the impact of a similar such facility's had down here at ASU
and words don't describe my excitement for ours! Combined with where our
program is today from the utter disaster Coach LK inherited and the way we
concluded this last season, continually showing improvement throughout the
season, the future looks awfully bright! The mere fact that
they're on even here with their typically regurgitated spin, while fully
engaged in wishful-thinking, in the first place, tells me the TDS fanbase is
acutely aware of the same! Go UTES!
Duckhunter should probably brush up on his history. The 1944 Utes beat NIT
champion St. John's in a game played a few days after the NCAA tournament.
Also, Utah won the NIT in 1947, so either way, the Utes have some sort of
championship. By the way, 37 year old Andre Miller is better than Jimmer today,
and better than he ever will be, college or pro. Andre is 10th all time in
assists in the NBA, and was a great college player for 4 years.
Spokane UteRemind us how many championship rings your #1 NFL and NBA
draft picks have won as starters, COMBINED!It's laughable how
Utah fans have to carefully parse eras in order to discuss football and
basketball accomplishments at the U.NOTHING before 2004 counts in
football (even during the "BCS era") and NOTHING since 2005 counts in
basketball (at least until Utah's basketball team returns from the
dead).1984 and 1996 are ancient history in football, but 1944 and
1998 are like yesterday in basketball. It's interesting that
Utah's only Hall of Fame player or coach came from an era in which Utah
"dominated" Rocky Mountain and Skyline conference teams that
weren't even on the same level as Big Sky teams of today, which is
precisely why even undefeated Utah teams of that era never finished in the final
@utahcntyuteBYU does have a Football National Championship, perhaps
you were talking about basketball? The thing is utah doesn't have a
National Championship in either sport. The ncaa tourney chapmionship utah
basketball has came when that tourney was the #2 tourney and utah had already
lost in the much larger and much more prestigious NIT. Fail. LOL!
It's one thing to talk the talk, it's another to walk the walk.
let's just cut to the chase; let's dicsuss Utah vs. BYU, head to head

on a thread regarding Utah's upgraded sport facilities, comparing your
program to ours? I also love how 1-2 years dictates Utah's entire past,

forever be Consensus National Player of the Year for 2011 and BYU fans will
always remember his last game in the HC where he single-handedly destroyed the
Utes. Jimmer just needs the right team and coach to take advantage of his skill
set. BYU has played in 27 NCAA tournaments, just like the Utes, but
unlike that sorry train wreck on the hill, playing in the NCAA is something
that's still commonplace for BYU.Utah football is nothing more

All that money -- and none of it going to athletes. Studies STILL show that a
full-ride falls an average of $3,000 per athlete short of paying for an
athlete's BASIC needs, AND athletes are restricted in how much they can
earn at a job. (While not just coaches, but FIRED coaches make millions.)Isn't the NCAA wonderful!

Furthermore, the byu bball program has really never done a thing..Oh
right, that Nat Player of Year you had a couple years ago is riding the pine in
Sac town. My bad.
@spokane uteActually the hypocrisy, as usual, is yours. You want to
claim utah is superior in football because of head to head and despite worse
records, lower rankings, etc. Yet you also want to claim utah
basketball superiority despite head to head inferiority and for that matter
inferiority in everything else that matters over the last decade. I'll give you utah "fans" credit for one thing though, you sure
are embarrassed by yourselves despite how much you really should be.

U's Little BrotherSorry guy, but little brothers don't

you restrict it to the time frame that fits your agenda. I've never seen
that one before. I also find it odd that you would be on a Utah article, trying
to compare your program to ours? I guess that really says it all. Envy and
jelousy is a sad, sad thing.
Spokane UteUnfortunately for U, it's not just head-to-head in
basketball, it's overall superiority across the board in record and
accomplishments during the Dave Rose era:BYU 209-66(76%), 6
NCAAs(4-6), 2 NITs(3-2), 4 conference championships, 8 straight 20+ win seasons,
12 of 15 head-to-headUtah 116-137(46%), 1 NCAA(0-1), 1 conference
championship, 1 20+ win season, 6 losing seasons, 3 of 15 head-to-headUnlike U, BYU isn't forced to rely entirely on head-to-head, because BYU
is clearly superior overall, in football, basketball, baseball, and just about
every other sport except women's gymnastics.

ekuteWhat would BYU fans have to be "jealous" of? A basketball program that BYU has OWNED since the last remnants of the Majerus
era left (7 in a row, 11 of the last 12, 149-145 overall), an arena that only
draws 5,000 warm bodies on a good night, or a basketball practice facility,
that, just like BYU's, is still in the planning stages?Gotta
laugh at how delusional the kids on the hill have become thinking that simply
being in the PAC 12 magically made U a PAC 12 caliber program. The
truth is, U wouldn't have done any better in the MWC the last two years,
and very likely, worse.Get over yourselves. The rest of us are
laughing at the bottom-dwelling angst the permeates the hill.
Cant wait to see the new facility ! Just like football. We own this state !
GO UTES !!
So when did this become a Utah-BYU discussion? Lol, it always turns out that
way with rivals. I appreciate some of the civility displayed herein. Having
said that, let me ask this question to the Y fans who are so negative about this
announcement. How will this not help the Utes in recruiting and athletic
performance? Its hard to argue that Larry isn't a good coach so there must
be some other reason. Help me understand.Go UTES!!
Couldn't agree more with Chris B's assessment that it's great to
have PAC 12 money. The challenge of all this upgrading is that the pressure to
deliver is growing by the day and by the dollar. Failure in the weakling
Indy/WAC/WCC world is much less visable than failure in the so called
"conference of champions". Fortunately most Utes and their fans are not
as silly and obnoxious as the Chris B's of the world, but regardless
it's time to get a clue that results are what matters. You accomplish
nothing by merely belonging, and in fact look worse when there are no results.

reminder - see photos of just about any game in the HC in the last 5 years.
Certainly a significant announcement; coaching, academics, facilities, playing
time, & overall program success/notoriety have always been significant
factors in recruiting.... And this is indeed what the influx of
PAC12 $$ is all about. We all know the usual U naysayers will be
out no matter the weather; silly pronouncements about future failures are
certainly specious --- no one can foretell the future, and we all know no
program is either permanently successful or unsuccessful. But what
really is important here is that the U continues to take advantage of their
"new" PAC12 membership and finances, assisting not only the football
& basketball programs, but other sports venues as well. So no
matter the naysayers, clearly the U has taken a dramatic step forward by joining
the PAC12, and here we see another example of the benefits of PAC12
membership.Congrats to Coach K & Dr. Hill for this excellent
development, Great News!!
U90,I think that Seriously is just giving the Utah fans some of their own
Chris B medicine.
The table is set. Good coach, great facilities, better athletes. Anything short
of a NCAA tournament bid will be disapointing this year. An NIT bid at the very
Fashion Police thought this was an article about that 1984 *trophy.
But seriously folks,Funny, I don't see anyone claiming this
facility will deliver a Conf championship. What are you reading?
VegasUteA little touchy aren't we?There was nothing
in Fashion's comment that said anything about Utah or BYU.
Fashion and Folks - thanks for dropping by and showing your love and support for
all things Utah. We enjoy all comments and support from our friends down
Let's just give Utah the PAC 11+U championship NOW. No need to play out
the season.Good facilities does not a champion make.
Good news for Coach K and staff. Keep that program moving forward!!Go Utes!! Onward and Upward!!
It doesn't matter how fancy your parking garage is if all you have to put
in it is a rusted-out beater that is long since past its prime.
Awesome! This is great news. The U will now be ranked #1 just by this
announcement alone! Seriously though, this is great news on so many levels.
Being a member of the PAC-12 has great benefits that are starting to come forth.
Let's just hope that they can put wins together. Go UTES!!
LK definately has the program headed in the right direction. This facility will
only help him re-establish Utah as the states top dog in basketball.
The only people who don't like this announcement follow WCC/WAC
I LOVE our Pac 12 Conference of Champion money!
